First Issue Date: 17-JUL-2014 Last Publication Date: 03-JUL-2015 Status: Open
Applicability:

A350 FMS EIS standard.

Description

FMS data retention does not work.

Consequence

At each A/C power up, the following entered data are always lost:
- PERF/IDLE factor
- Pilot defined items (waypoints, Company Route…)
- History winds
- F-PLN data
- NDB cycle

Most critical are the PERF/IDLE factors that are never saved and thus needs to be re-entered at
each A/C power up otherwise impact on:
- FMS predictions (PERF factor). Main impact is on the EFOB.
- FMS guidance during descent (IDLE)

Investigation Status

The FMS activates data retention storage upon reception of the A/C shutdown signal and in
ground status.
Then, data retention loading is activated at power up and with ground status.
The ground status signal is sent through AFDX network by CPIOM H63 and H64. At A/C power
up when the FM is started, this signal is not yet available for the FMS (available about 25sec
after power up).
So the FMS considers itself in flight status and thus does not launch data retention loading.
So Pilot stored elements are lost including PERF/IDLE factor. In this case the FMS retrieve the
AMI values for PERF/IDLE factors.

Mitigation / Interim Plan

After A/C power up, F-PLN elements are generally loaded through AOC (FPN uplink message).
But not PERF&IDLE factors (note that they could be through uplink message PER/PD).
PERF/IDLE factors are monitored by A/L Operations center through A/C Performance
Monitoring for each MSNs. Update on A/C is ordered by Ops people and specific to each MSNs.
FCOM SOP (Standard Operating Procedures) requests to check PERF & IDLE factors in
preliminary cockpit preparation, and provides procedure to modify those factors.

Maintenance Information
N/A.

Permanent Solution

The next A350 FMS standard (S4 std, planned for Q4 2016) will fix the data retention
misbehaviour for the PERF and IDLE factors.

OPS Information
The flight operational documentation manages the FMS data retention issue through the
FCOM:
- The FMS section “Temporary Abnormal Behaviors” describes the FMS data retention
issue
- The Standard Operating Procedures inform the flight crew to check the PERF and the
IDLE factors in the DATA/STATUS FMS page during preliminary cockpit preparation. In
order to modify the PERF and IDLE factors values, there is a link toward the applicable
section of the FCOM.
