1. SCOPE
This procedure describes methods for Leak Testing of completed welds by using
vacuum box equipment. This test is normally performed on welded joints in bottom plates,
roof plates to ensure that there is no leakage in the welded joints, however, applicable
manufacturing code, inspection test plan and or client specifications shall be referenced
for actual areas to be tested.
2. REFERENCE
3. QUALIFICATION OF PERSONNEL
Personnel performing vacuum box testing and evaluating the test results to this
procedure shall meet the following requirements:
a) Operators shall be checked annually to ensure that they have vision (with correction, if
necessary) to be able to read a Jaeger Type 2 standard chart at a distance of not less
than 300 mm (12 in.); and
b) Operator is competent in the technique of the vacuum-box testing, including performing
the examination and interpreting and evaluating the results.
4. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
General safe practices & safety requirements shall be adhered during the Vacuum Box
Inspection.
5. PROCEDURE
• This examination shall be performed after weld seams have been inspected and
accepted visually.
• The surfaces to be examined and all adjacent areas shall be dry and free of all
dirt, grease, lint, scale, welding flux and spatter, oil or other extraneous matter
that could mask surface openings and interfere with the examination.
• The metal surface temperature limits shall be between 4°C (40°F) and 52°C
(125°F), unless the film solution is proven to work at temperatures outside these
limits.

• A minimum Light Intensity of 1076 Lux (100 fc) at the point of examination is
required during the application of examination and evaluation for leaks.
• Applying the film solution to a dry area, such that the area is thoroughly wetted,
and a minimum generation of application bubbles occurs.
5.4 Operation
• Each length of weld [± 750mm] to be tested and adjacent 50mm band area shall
be cleaned and dried prior to the application of the bubble forming solution.
• A partial vacuum of 70 kPa gauge (10 psig) shall be used for the test.
• Apply the bubble forming solution to weld area to be tested by either flowing,
brushing or spraying method.
• Place vacuum box over the weld and reduce pressure until a required vacuum is
achieved.
• The vacuum shall be maintained for the greater of either at least 5 seconds or
the time required viewing the area under test.
• Observation for leaks is made prior the vacuum is released.
• Proceed to the next weld length ensuring the vacuum box overlaps the end of
the last section of weld tested at least 50mm.
• If bubbles are observed the defective area shall be marked, repaired by welding
as per approved repair procedure and re-tested in accordance with this
procedure.
6. DOCUMENTS
The result of the testing shall be documented on Vacuum Box Examination Report.
