MIDTERM EXAM

I. SOLVE: (► 100 pts)

A. At rated load a 30,000-kW steam turbine and auxiliaries require 5.442 kg

of steam per kW-hr. Steam conditions are: initial pressure, 1.8 MPa;
superheat, 120°C; Feed water, 82°C. Assuming the boilers are operated at
250% rating when supplying the steam requirement. Determine: (20 pts)
i. Boiler horsepower.
ii. Ratio of kW turbine rating to boiler horsepower rating.

Note:
At 1.8 MPa, 120°C; hs = 3093 kJ/kg
At 82°C: hf = 343.3 kJ/kg

B. A steam power plant is to have an output of 2500 kW when 27,210.88

kg/hr of steam are extracted for process work in the plant. Steam is
supplied to the turbine at 1.2 MPa absolute and 260°C, exhaust pressure
0.014 MPa absolute, and the turbine efficiency is 75% before and after the
extraction opening. At the extraction point, pressure is 0.205 MPa
absolute. Extracted steam is returned to the boiler as liquid at 93°C and the
condensed exhaust is returned at 49°C. Boiler efficiency is 80%.
Generator efficiency is 95% and the fuel has a higher heating value of
30,706.83 kJ/kg. Determine: (20 pts)
i. Steam supplied to turbine throttle, in kg/hr.
ii. Fuel required, in kg/hr.

Note:
At P1 = 1.2 MPaa, t1 = 260°C; h1 = 2957 kJ/kg; s1 = 6.8721 kJ/kg-K = s2
At P2 = 0.205 MPaa: sf2 = 1.5386 kJ/kg-K; sfg2 = 5.5803 kJ/kg-K
hf2 = 508.03 kJ/kg; hfg2 = 2119.8 kJ/kg
From Mollier Chart: At h2’ = 2697.305 kJ/kg and P2 = 0.205 MPaa
s2 = 7.09 kJ/kg-K = s3
At P3 = 0.014 MPaa:
sf3 = 0.7366 kJ/kg-K; sfg3 = 7.2959 kJ/kg-K
hf3 = 219.99 kJ/kg; hfg3 = 2376.6 kJ/kg

C. A steam turbine-generator power plant has the following name plate data
on the generator: kVA = 5000 (1 kVA = 1000 Watts); P.F. = 90%; Volts =
13,800; Phase = 3; Cycles = 60; RPM = 3,600; Generator efficiency =
95%. Steam turbine is directly coupled to the generator and has a
guaranteed heat rate of 2,600 kcal per kW-hr. (20 pts)
i. What is the nominal capacity of this unit?
ii. What is the maximum continuous rating (MCR) of this unit
in kW?
iii. Calculate the combined heat rate of the unit in kcal per kW-
hr.
iv. If the local coal is burned in the boiler of this unit, HHV =
5,200 kcal/kg, calculate the hourly coal consumption if
overall boiler efficiency is 85% at nominal capacity.
D. A 5,000 horsepower, 2-stroke cycle, 8-cylinder, 546.1 mm x 558.8 mm
Diesel Engine running at 300 rpm at full load use fuel oil at the rate of
0.264 kg/kW-hr based on brake power, with a heating value of 43,387.33
kJ/kg. It drives a generator whose efficiency is 92% and 3.5% of the
output is required for the auxiliaries of the plant. If the expected capacity
factor is 30%, determine: (20 pts)
i. Combined thermal efficiency.
ii. Plant efficiency.
iii. Capacity and size of storage tank to be used to last for one
month allowing 50% extra for contingency.
iv. Size of transfer pump in gpm. Oil has a specific gravity of
0.94.

Note:
1 mᶾ = 1000 kg
1 mᶾ = 264.1721 gallon
1 hp = 0.746 kW
1 hr = 3600 sec
1 month = 30 days
1 day = 24 hrs

E. A gas turbine power plant has an output of 10,000 kW with electrical and
mechanical loss of 600 kW. The overall thermal efficiency of the unit is
25%. The gas turbine exhausts to a waste heat recovery boiler which is
75% efficient. The steam from the boiler drives a steam turbine-generator
which has an overall heat rate of 11,605.62 kJ/kW-hr. Steam turbine unit
auxiliaries require 880 kW. Determine: (20 pts)
i. Output of the steam turbine generating unit in kW.
ii. The net heat rate in kJ/kW of the combined cycle.
iii. Plant thermal efficiency of the steam turbine-generator
plant.
iv. Overall thermal efficiency.

Note:
1 kW-hr = 3600 kJ
1 hr = 3600 sec
