Numbers of World Issues

by Ronel L. Alijado

Poverty, pollution, discrimination, human rights violations, and terrorism affect

many people around the world. These bring miseries to nations. Seemingly, for a lot of
people, there have been no concrete policies and programs to address the problems to
help them to survive and to get a chance for a better life.

According to Asian Development Bank, 16.6% of the population (almost 18

million people) lived below the national poverty line in 2018 in the Philippines. James
Baldwin, an African-American writer, said, “Anyone who has struggled with poverty
knows how extremely expensive it is to be poor.” Poverty results to unemployment, lack
of education, malnutrition, disease, and crime. Its social consequences make their lives
even worse.

Five million deaths each year are linked to air pollution. Annually, around the
globe, 400 million tons of hazardous waste is produced. One ton of oil is spilled for
every 1 million tons of oil being transported. The world’s forest has been already
destroyed by 80%. These numbers suggest harms and deaths they cause on land, in
water, in air, on human health, and on flora and fauna.
Amnesty International states that “discrimination occurs when a person is unable
to enjoy his or her human rights or other legal rights on an equal basis with others
because of an unjustified distinction made in policy, law, or treatment.” People suffer
from discrimination because of their race, class, religion, gender, etc. For example,
same-sex sexual activity is a crime in 70 countries and can get people a death sentence
in Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Sudan.

On the other hand, more than, 5,500 suspected drug dealers and users have
been killed since June 2016 in the Philippines according to Human Rights Watch.
Without a due process, people are at risk of becoming victims of a war against illegal
drugs and without an investigation into these extrajudicial killings, they become only
statistics. The number will definitely rise.

Barack Obama said, “No religion is responsible for terrorism. People are
responsible for violence and terrorism.” In the 2020 Global Terrorism Index, the number
of terror-related deaths is 13, 826. Because of radical and evil views of some individuals
and groups, they spread violence and cause fears, traumas, and deaths in societies.
