828 - 1 DESCRIPTION - FUEL MICROFILTER SYSTEM

1. General

The m i c r o f i l t e r not only i n s u r e s t h a t f o r e i g n p a r t i c l e s a r e f i l t e r e d o f f ,


but a l s o t r a p s i c e c r y s t a l s , s o t h a t a d d i t i o n t o t h e f u e l of a n t i - i c e
a d d i t i v e i s rendered unnecessary.

2. Description
The m i c r o f i l t e r s a r e l o c a t e d on t h e engine compartment f l o o r between t h e
f u e l shut-off valve and t h e engine-mounted f u e l f i l t e r , d i r e c t l y below
t h e engine cornbustion chambers.
The m i c r o f i l t e r u n i t c o n s i s t s of a 10-micron element, a bypass valve
incorporating an e l e c t r i c a l clogging i n d i c a t o r , and a d r a i n valve. A d r i p
t r a y , l o c a t e d on t h e engine compartment f l o o r under t h e d r a i n valve,
catches drained f l u i d from t h e f i l t e r and d i r e c t s it overboard v i a t h e
drainage system.

3. Operation
The warning segments FILT I and FILT I1 i n d i c a t e clogging of t h e
engine-mounted f u e l f i l t e r s and t h e m i c r o f i l t e r s . I f clogging i s
indicated, t h e m i c r o f i l t e r must be i n s p e c t e d f i r s t because it i s located
upstream of t h e engine-mounted f u e l f i l t e r . When clogging causes a
pressure d i f f e r e n c e a c r o s s t h e m i c r o f i l t e r of 0.27 b a r (0.28 kp/cm2), a
bypass valve i n t h e f i l t e r u n i t w i l l Open. The d i f f e r e n t i a l pressure
i n d i c a t o r i n s t a l l e d upstream of t h e bypass valve w i l l a c t u a t e sooner t o
i n d i c a t e clogging a t d i f f e r e n t i a l p r e s s u r e s of between 0.082 and 0.092
b a r (0.084 t o 0.094 kp/cm2) . P r i o r t o each f l i g h t , t h e d r a i n valve must
be checked f o r proper operation and t h e warning segments t e s t e d by
pressing t h e warning button on t h e m i c r o f i l t e r . Then t h e f u e l pumps i n
t h e main f u e l tanks must be switched On. The f u e l pressure reading i n t h e
cockpit must be 0 . 4 9 b a r (0.5 kp/cm2). A f t e r t h e pumps i n t h e forward
main tanks a r e switched On, switch on t h o s e i n t h e supply tank. The
pressure reading must then i n c r e a s e t o approx. 0.98 b a r ( 1 . 0 kp/cm2 ) .

General
- Refer to wiring diagram 828-1 in the Wiring Diagram Manual (WDM).
- Inspect electrical connections for tightness.
- Connect external power source (EPU). Set battery switch 16P on instrument
panel to BATT OFF / EPU ON.

828 -4 INSPECTION FOR CONDITION - FUEL MICROFILTER SYSTEM


1. Inspect mounting support (10, f i g . 828-1) f o r t i g h t i n s t a l l a t i o n . D r i l l
out and replace loose r i v e t s . .
2. Inspect mounting support f o r corrosion. Polish out corroded areas w i t h
400 g r i t abrasive c l o t h and r e s t o r e p r o t e c t i v e f i n i s h .

3. Inspect screws (8 and 24) f o r t i g h t i n s t a l l a t i o n . I f necessary, t i g h t e n


screws and replace lockwire.
4. Inspect p i p e l i n e s f o r leakage. Tighten appropriate union nuts a s
necessary.
5. Inspect connection (1) f o r t i g h t n e s s .

828 - 5 FUNCTIONAL CHECK - FUEL MICROFILTER SYSTEM


1. Fuse 9E must be i n place i n t h e f u s e holder i n t h e instrument panel
(bottom r i g h t s i d e ) .
2. Connect e x t e r n a l power source.
3. Warning segments FILT I and FILT 2 1EA must not come On.
4. Remove connector lOlQWa from pressure switch l O l Q W and connect pin A with
pin B. Warning segment FILT I must come On.
5. Remove connector 201QWa from pressure switch 201QW and connect pin A with
pin B . Warning segment FILT 2 must c'ome On.
6. Reconnect connectors lOlQWa and 201QWa and secure with lockwire.

828 - 6 Removal - microfilter

1. Disconnect f o l l o w i n g e l e c t r i c a l c o n n e c t i o n s .

a. Switch o f f e x t e r n a l power supply.

b. S e t BATTERY MASTER s w i t c h t o OFF.

C.. S e t MAIN TANK FUEL PUMPS 1 and 2 s w i t c h e s t o OFF.

d. S e t SUPPLY TANK FUEL PUMPS ENG 1 and 2 s w i t c h e s t o OFF.

e. Disconnect connector lOlQWa ( m i r o f i l t e r 1) o r 201QWa ( m i c r o f i l t e r 2)


from f i l t e r .

2. Drain f u e l from f i l t e r and a s s o c i a t e d l i n e s by p r e s s i n g i n t h e d r a i n


v a l v e (17, f i g . 828-1) on t h e underside of t h e f i l t e r . Fuel d r a i n e d from
t h e v a l v e i s c o l l e c t e d i n t h e d r i p t r a y on t h e f l o o r of t h e engine
compartment and i s d i r e c t e d overboard through d r a i n l i n e s .
3. Disconnect l i n e s by unscrewing union n u t (20) between elbow ( 1 9 ) and
flange (22).
4. Remove screws ( 8 ) and washers ( 9 ) and remove m i c r o f i l t e r from mounting
s u p p o r t ( 1 0 ) . This r e l e a s e s t h e s p a c e r s l e e v e s ( 7 ) .
5. I f necessary, remove screws (24) and t a k e o f f f l a n g e ( 2 2 ) . Discard
0-rings (23) .

828 - 7 Installation - microfilter

CAUTION WHEN INSTALLING THE MICROFILTER, TAKE CARE THAT THE FLOW
DIRECTION ARROW POINTS INBOARD.

1. I n s e r t new 0 - r i n g s (23, f i g . 828-1) and mount f l a n g e (22) t o f i l t e r


housing with screws ( 2 4 ) . Wire-lock t h e screws.

2. P o s i t i o n m i c r o f i l t e r i n t h e mounting s u p p o r t ( 1 0 ) with s p a c e r s l e e v e s ( 7 )
and s e c u r e w i t h screws ( 8 ) and washers ( 9 ) . Wire-lock t h e screw.
3. Connect l i n e s t o f l a n g e s (22) by t i g h t e n i n g union n u t s ( 2 0 ) .

4. I n s t a l l connector lOlQWa o r 201Qwa, a s a p p r o p r i a t e .

828 - 8 Replacement - f i l t e r element


1. Remove lockwire from f i l t e r bowl and d r a i n valve.

2. Unscrew and remove f i l t e r bowl and element using a s t r a p wrench.

3. Discard f i l t e r elernent (14, f i g . 828-1) and 0-rings (12 and 1 3 ) .

4. I n s t a l l new f i l t e r element and new 0-rings i n f i l t e r bowl.

5. Screw f i l t e r bowl on f i l t e r element u n t i l t h e 0-rings bottom, then apply


slippage mark a c r o s s junction of bowl and element.
6. Tighten f i l t e r bowl an a d d i t i o n a l 60° t o 90'.

NOTE Tightening t h e f i l t e r bowl another 60° should s e a l t h e


u n i t . I f f u e l continues t o l e a k out, t h e bowl can be f u r t h e r
t i g h t e n e d another 90° maximum (90° i s equal t o approx. 17 Nm
torque load) .
7. I n s t a l l lockwire on f i l t e r body and d r a i n valve.

8. Run engine t o check m i c r o f i l t e r f o r leakage.
