Lesson Techniques in Delivering

1 Extemporaneous or
Impromptu Speech
There are many kinds of speech delivery, but impromptu speech can be
considered as the most challenging one. It is a kind of speech where the
speaker is given a specific time allotment of 5-8 minutes to select a topic,
brainstorm their ideas, outline the speech, and finally deliver the speech.
Furthermore, the speech is delivered without notes and ideas should be
sequenced with an introduction, body, and conclusion.

What is It

Impromptu Speaking Techniques

Impromptu speaking is delivering an unprepared speech. It can really be

very challenging because of its process. Since in the speech delivery notes are
not allowed, it is very important that you know well the following techniques
to structure your speech and some ways to generate your ideas when your
mind suddenly goes blank.

• PREP (Point, Reason, Example, Point)

1. Point. Start off by making a clear point about the subject you’re
speaking about.
2. Reason. Describe your reason for that particular point.
3. Example. Give few examples to illustrate.
4. Point. Finish with some concluding remarks to wrap up your story.

• Pros, Cons, Recommendation

1. Pros. Start off your speech by describing the pros first.
2. Cons. Describe the cons.
3. Recommendation. Wrap up with your recommendation.

• STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result)

1. Situation. Describe the situation that you were in.
2. Task. Describe the task that you completed.
3. Action. Describe the specific actions that you took to complete the
task.
4. Result. Conclude by describing the result that was achieved by
taking the actions.

Tips in Delivering Impromptu Speech

1. Go Slowly.
Get up from your chair slowly. Walk to the front calmly. Breathe deeply.

2. Take your time to begin.

Look around, smile. Make an eye contact with one or two people in the
room.

3
3. Stand Tall.
Remember to stand on both feet about a shoulder width apart. Do not
put your hands inside your pocket.

4. Use your notes as your guide.

Do not try to remember the whole speech. If you missed some points,
don’t feel anxious. Proceed to the points you have conceptualized in
mind.

5. Talk conversationally.
Make your speech as naturally flowing as possible.

6. Watch the words.

Use simple words instead of jargons or difficult words.

7. Personalize your speech

It would be more credible if you use your own stories or experiences.

8. Keep it short and straight to the point.

Your audience would not feel bored and will keep listening to you.

9. Walk when required.

In informal speeches, walking from one side of the stage to the other
will enhance your confidence.

Federigo’s Falcon
From The Decameron
Giovanni Boccaccio
translated by Mark Musa and Peter
Bondanella

Summary

Federigo, an exceptionally rich, fell in love with Monna Giovanna, a

woman of nobility and beauty. Federigo bought Monna a lot of gifts and
held sumptuous banquets. His love for Monna Giovanna went to the ends
of the world that he was willing to offer her everything just to win her heart.
Federigo became very poor for having spent huge amount of money. Monna
married a much richer man and had a son, leaving Federigo’s heart in
despair. As a result of Federigo’s poverty, he moved from Florence to
Campi. All he had was a few pennies to sustain his daily needs, a farm,
and a falcon. After Monna’s husband died, she and her child went for a
seasonal vacation to a country estate near Federigo’s farm. Her son
became friends with Federigo. One day, her son fell very ill. The child told
his Monna saying, “I will feel better if you can arrange to have Federigo’s
falcon be mine”. Monna couldn’t utter a word of refusal. She gathered
strength to go to Federigo’s abode. As she reached his humble home,
Federigo hastened to welcome her with a tasty meal. He had no food in
stock. As he found a way to offer a meal to Monna, he realized he could
have his falcon roasted. Without having second thoughts, he had the
falcon roasted. Monna was pleased with the tasty meal.

Later, she expressed the reason for her visit. Monna asked Federigo
if she could have his falcon for her son, as he felt that he would get better
if he could have Federigo’s falcon become his. Federigo was stunned and
told he had the falcon roasted, which Monna had just eaten. Monna didn’t
believe at first until Federigo showed her the feathers and beak. Monna
left and after a few days his son died. Federigo’s brother told him to marry
Monna but Federigo says Monna wouldn’t love a poor man that he was.
She never loved Federigo when he was rich much less now that he had
become poor. After he was convinced by his brother, Federigo asked
Monna’s hand for marriage. Monna realized that it was better to have a

6
gentleman without riches than to have riches without a gentleman. Soon,
Federigo and Monna ended up in marriage.

2. Why did Monna finally decide to marry Federigo?
