Topic: Module I - Reading “ The Akha way ” Learning Situation: Knowing about Akha people of
South Asia and their way of life

Learning competences:
Language Skills: Students enlarge their vocabulary related to different lifestyle , describing people and houses.
Life Skills: Students will have knowledge of different lifestyle esp about the Akha people of South Asia and their way
of life and they will be able to compare themselves with a person from the AKHA tribe.
Key words: fairly short, dark in complexion, colorfully embroidered black shirts, code of behavior, crossbows,
ancesters, spinning , distinctive, thatched roof, stand on stilts, wooden frame, spiritual significance, seek fortunes…..

Procedure
Warm Up/Review / Before Reading /Build Background
Direct Ss`s attention to the picture and read out the questions – where do you think these people live?
In a desert? an overcrowded city? a village? Up in the mountains? How do you know? What do you think their
lifestyle might be like?
Introduce the Vocabulary - In pairs Ss describe the people of the pictures by using the given vocabulary at exercise
1, b , teacher help them with the unfamiliar vocabulary as complexion /kəmplɛkʃ(ə)n/ means the natural color,
texture, and appearance of a person's skin, especially of the face., embroider means to decorate (cloth) by sewing
patterns on it with thread. ‘she embroidered a tablecloth’, ‘an embroidered handkerchief’
Before reading / check their knowledge
Ask Ss if they have ever heard about the The AKHA WAY? Do they know where it is? Show the map to them/ Then
Ss listen carefully the recording.
As students preview the text , point out any vocabulary that you think may be difficult for them and then Ss try to
complete the information in the chart . This activity is connected to the next step also. It can also be used as a
feedback at the end.

During Reading /Student Reading for specific information.


Guide the reading: Have students read the text and in small groups answers in their own words the questions as
What is the Akha WAY? How do AKha men`s roles differ from Akha women`s roles? …..…..
Then when they have finished, have students tell some of the interesting words and phrases they found in the text. As
ancestors, thatched roof, seek fortune ect
After Reading /Reflect on the Reading Strategies/ Comprehension Skill
Ss individually Choose the best answers according to the text , Give reasons for their answers . Teacher explains the
task and ask them to find the part in the text that contains the answer in order to do the task. Give them time to read
the text again and choose the correct answers.

The read the words/phrases in the list and give Ss time to find their synonyms in the text as initially =

Evaluation: Evaluate the best Ss taking part in the class discussion
Assessment: Writing: compare yourself with e person from the Akha tribe . Think about: appearance, clothes, family,
lifestyle.
Feedback: Ask students once again about he chart a
