Problem Set-2
HOMEWORK: 3 and 4
DUE DATE: MARCH 29, 2021
1. Starting from the definitions of Reynolds Number which is given in terms of the average velocity of
fluid v , derive an alternative expression for the NRe in terms of;
2. A 4-in diameter pipe carries 0.20 ft3/s of glycerin (sg=1.26) at 100 ºF. Is the laminar or turbulent?
3. Calculate the Reynolds number for the flow each of the following fluids in a 2-in Schedule 40 steel
pipe if the volume flow rate is 0.25 ft3/s: (a) water 60 ºF, (b) acetone at 77 ºF, (c) castor oil at 77 ºF.
4. Benzene (sg=0.86) at 60 ºC is flowing at 25 L/min in a 1-in Schedule 80 steel pipe. Is the flow laminar
or turbulent?
5. A system being designed to carry 500 gal/min of the ethylene glycol at 77 ºF. Maximum velocity
should be approximately 10 ft/s. Specify smallest standard Schedule 40 steel pipe to meet this
condition. The, for the selected pipe, compute the Reynolds number for the flow.
6. A small velocity probe is to be inserted through a pipe wall. If we measure from the outside of the 6-
in Schedule 80 pipe, how far (in mm) should the probe be inserted to sense the average velocity if the
flow in the pipe is laminar?
7. Air enters a nozzle steadily at 2.21 kg/m3 and 30 m/s and leaves at 0.762 kg/m3 and 180 m/s. If the
inlet area of the nozzle is 80 cm2, determine (a) the mass flow rate through the nozzle, (b) the exit area
of the nozzle.
8. It is required to obtain highly turbulent stream for a water stream by reducing the diameter of the pipe.
Initially water flows in a 4-in ID pipe with a flowrate of 50 g/sec at 60 ºC. To what extend diameter
should be reduced? (a) If just turbulence is required (b) If Reynolds number is to kept at 10000.
9. There are two identical pipes one carries water and the other carries air. Initial velocities are the same
at 25 ºC. Then both velocities are started to increase at the same rate. Determine the fluid which will
be turbulent first. (ρair=6 kg/m3)
10. Consider the steady flow of water at 70 ºF through the piping system shown below where the velocity
distribution at section (1) may be expressed as, ft/h
(a) Find the average velocity section (2)
(b) Find The Re number at section (1) and (2)
11. Mass flowrate of water in the following system is 20 kg/s. Obtain a relationship for the average
velocity as a function of pipe length.
12. Water flows at an average velocity of 7 ft/s in 6” ID pipe and at 20 ft/s in 9” ID pipe as in the
following figure. What is the average velocity of water in 12” ID pipe? Calculate the mass and
volumetric flowrate and mass fluxes in each pipe.
13. The velocity profile in fully developed laminar flow in a circular pipe of inner radius R= 2cm, in
m/s, is given by u(r) = 4(1- r2/R2). Determine the average and maximum velocities in the pipe and the
volume flow rate.
14. Average velocity for mass balance in flow down vertical plate. For a layer of liquid flowing in a
laminar flowing in laminar flow in the z direction down a vertical plate or surface, the velocity profile
is

Where δ is the thickness of the layer, x is the distance from the free surface of the liquid towards the
plate and Vz is the velocity at a distance x from the free surface
a) What is the maximum velocity Vz,max?
b) Derive the expression for the average velocity Vz,ave, and also relative it to Vz,max.
15. The velocity profile in a circular pipe is given by v = vmax (1 – r/R)1/7 where R is the radius of the
pipe. Please find the average velocity in the pipe in terms of vmax.
