ANILA, October 13, 2011 Pope Bened...ict XVI has appointed Imus Bishop Luis Antonio Tagle, a known theologian, as the new archbishop of Manila. At 54, Tagle will succeed Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales who served the influential post for eight years. Archbishop-elect Tagles appointment was officially announced in Rome on October 13 at 12:00 noon (6:00 pm, Manila time). The information was officially received by the Media Office of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) Thursday in a communiqu from the Apostolic Nunciature in Manila. I write to inform you that the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI has appointed His Excellency Most Reverend Luis Antonio Tagle, until now Bishop of Imus, as Archbishop of Manila, said Monsignor Gabor Pinter, Charge D Affaires. Rosales, who just turned 79 years old last August 16, earlier said that the Vatican has already accepted his resignation early this year and was just waiting for his successor to be named. The cardinal submitted his resignation in 2007 when he turned 75, the mandatory retirement age for prelates, but the pontiff extended his term indefinitely.
Born in Manila on June 21, 1957, Tagle took his Philosophy and Theology at the Ateneo De Manila Universitys San Jose Major Seminary. He was ordained to the priesthood on February 27, 1982, at the age of 25. From 1985 to 1992, he was sent for further studies at the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. where he earned his Doctorate in Sacred Theology. Since 1997, Tagle is a member of the International Theological Commission of the Vatican. In 1998, he was an expert at the Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for Asia that took place in Rome. On December 12, 2001, he was ordained Bishop of Imus. Since then, his activities have been as numerous as in the past. He travels throughout the country in answer to many invitations as a speaker. At the Synod of Bishops held in Rome in 2005, he was elected member of the postsynodal Council and assistant to Cardinal Angelo Scola, general reporter of this Synod. Tagle is currently the chairman of the Commission on Doctrine of the Faith of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP). No date yet has been set for the ordination and installation of the new Manila archbishop. (CBCPNews)

In 1 Corinthians 11:27, we read (RSV): "Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord" [emphasis added]. Whether we eat the host or drink from the cup, we profane both the body and the blood of Christ, so the host consists not only of the body of Christ, but also of his blood. Likewise, the cup consists of not only the blood, but also the body of Christ.
he Italian priest Father Fausto Tentorio, who was gunned down in North Cotabato on Monday, was the third priest in their congregation who was murdered in the Philippines. A member of the Pontificio Instituto Missioni Estere (PIME or Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions), Tentorio was shot and killed by a lone gunman inside the compound of the Mother of Perpetual Help parish church in Arakan at around 7:30 a.m. on Monday. According to the PIME Philippines blog, two other Italian members of their congregation were murdered before Tentorio Father Tullio Favali and Father Salvatore Carzedda. All three missionary priests were murdered in Mindanao Tentorio and Favali in North Cotabato and Carzedda in Zamboanga City. After 2 weeks since Bro. Mike Z. Velarde, servant leader of El Shaddai DWXI Prayer Partner International Fellowship, announced his visit to Korea via DWXI PPFI, he finally arrived. Bro. Mike arrived at Incheon Airport on Friday, October 14, 2011 via Asiana Airlines at 5:25pm. He was with his son, Congressman Michael Z. Velarde, Jr. and wife Sister Belen, together with family friends Philippine Ambassador to Kazakhstan, Edward Fereira and his wife Baby Fereira. They were greeted with warm welcome banner and flowers by the El Shaddai Community and their Korean friend, Dr. Helen. They stayed at Imperial Palace Hotel in Gangnam Seoul. Last Saturday, he had a lunch meeting with Papal Nuncio, Fr. Alvin Parantar, Prof. Emely Abagat, Congressman Michael Velarde, Jr., Sis. Belen, Mr. and Mrs. Fereira and Bro. Tony Sacapanio in Papal Nuncios residence. Our servant leader was invited over by a Korean friend for a business purpose and a visit to the members El Shaddai Prayer Partners in South Korea Chapter. Father Salvatore Carzedda Meanwhile, Carzeda was born in Bitti, Nuoro, on the island of Sardinia in Italy on December 20, 1943. He arrived in the Philippines in 1977. Fr. Carzeda was shot in the head and the body by two unidentified men on a motorbike on May 20, 1992 in Zamboanga City. The priest had just come from a conference of Christians and Muslims when, some 400 meters from the regional house of the PIME fathers, the gunmen overtook the van he was in.
The killers were never identified. The PIME blog said nobody knows who was behind the murder because it was difficult to carry out the investigations. "The climate was tense and nobody was disposed to inquire among the fundamentalist groups of Muslims or local criminals. Too dangerous. For many the silence after the investigations appeared to be a better choice in order not to give a clear motive for ulterior actions of terrorism," the PIME site said. lives to missionary work among non-Christians. Ngunit sila na halos dalawang linggo nang walang ilaw ay tuloy pa rin sa pamumuhay kahit na kasama nila sa loob ng bahay ang mga daga, ipis at ahas. Batay pa sa ilang nagkuwento, mayroong nanganak sa bubong ng bahay at nakalabas na ang bata bago pa man dumating ang rescue, may ahas na tinakpan na lamang ng kumot para di ito mangagat, may namatay dahil nakuryente at may nakagat rin ng ahas at namatay. Oh my God! ang tanging nasambit ko. Lumipas ang ilang oras ngunit hindi pa tapos ang pamimigay namin subalit kailangang makaalis na kami sa lugar na iyon bago pa man dumilim sapagkat di na makikita ng bangkero ang daanan pabalik. Ilang saglit pa ay dumating na ang mga sundalong sumundo sa amin at dali-dali na agad kaming sumakay. Iniwan na lamang namin ang ilang relief goods sa pamamahala ng simbahan ng San Jose kung saan naganap ang pagbibigayan at bahala na silang ipagpatuloy ito. Magtatakipsilim na nang kami ay makarating sa may tuyong bahagi kung saan naroon ang sasakyang pangsundalo na silang maghahatid sa amin sa bayan. Nakakapanghina, hindi sa pagod kundi dahil sa nakakapanlumong kalagayan ng mga tao. Kung paanong lumubog ang buong barangay ay namasdan ko rin ang paglubog ng araw sa hapong iyon. Ah..isang hudyat na bukas ay muli itong sisikat upang magbigay ng liwanag sa lugar at sa mga tagaroon. May sumulpot ding dalawang bahaghari. Makulay ito katulad ng pangako ng Diyos kay Noe na muling nagbigay-buhay sa mundo pagkatapos ng matinding baha. Tanging laman ng isip ko habang naglalakbay kami pauwi ng Maynila ay ang taos sa pusong pasasalamat sa Diyos dahil naging bahagi ako ng pagtulong at hindi ako ang tinulungan.
he Hyehwadong Filipino Catholic Community (HFCC) Choir joined the 2011 Migrants Song Festival and won the 3rd prize that was held on September 25, 2011 in Changwon City. The HFCC Choir had to go through a screening or elimination process before they could finally get to the grand finals. The first preliminary round was held at the Junggu Citizen Hall at Dongdaemun on July 24, 2011 with a total of 45 contestants. They were chosen among the three (3) bests in this round which qualified them to the second preliminary round. The second preliminary round was held in Busan on August 24, 2011. In Busan, there were a total of 600 contestants and only 13 made it to the grand finals. These contestants are of different nationalities, chosen from different places or areas in Korea. Most of them, however, were Filipinos. The grand finals was held in Changwon City with 13 teams vying for the grand prize. Congratulations again to our HFCC Choir for bringing home the 3rd prize!!! he Maseok Filipino Migrants Community celebrated its 10th year anniversary last Sunday, 16th October 2011. Maseok Filipino Migrants Community used to be a sub-community of the Hyehwadong Filipino Catholic Community under the leadership of Fr. Glenn Giovanni Jaron, MSP. The current Chaplain is Fr. Cedric Alimbuyong, MSP. The celebration started with the Holy Mass with His Eminence Archbishop Osvaldo Padilla, DD as the main celebrant. In the Mass, two members of the community received the Sacrament of Confirmation. The Bishop of Uijungbu Diocese, Bishop Lee also graced the occasion. Guests from different Filipino communities and Migrant Centers from Guri, Paju, and Seoul came to celebrate with the Maseok community. After the Mass, the festivity continued and enjoyed the Filipino food. A short program was also held. Some children of multicultural families were chosen to show off their talents, some sang while others danced and lots of prices were given away for the games and for the raffle. The grant prize winner of the raffle received a netbook.

principle at the heart of the justification of contraception (and, later, other deeds in which evil is done for some higher good). This is the principle of totality as understood by the advocates of contraception. This principle is illustrated by the argument, advanced by the majority of the Papal Commission, distinguishing between individual or isolated marital acts and marriage as a whole or totality. Its principal claim is that the good of procreation is properly respected and honored even if individual acts of marriage are deliberately made infertile, so long as those acts are ordered to an expression of love and to a generous fecundity within marriage as a whole. An illuminating passage reads as follows: When man interferes with the procreative purpose of individual acts by contracepting, he does this with the intention of regulating and not excluding fertility. Then he unites the material finality which exists in intercourse with the formal finality of the person and renders the entire process humanConjugal acts which by intention are infertile or which are rendered infertile are ordered to the expression of the union of love; that love, however, reaches its culmination in fertility responsibly accepted. For that reason other acts of union are in a certain sense incomplete; and they receive their full moral quality with ordination toward the fertile act.Infertile conjugal acts constitute a totality with fertile acts and have a single moral specification.[24] Note that this passage considers recourse to the rhythm of the cycle or periodic abstinence as simply another contraceptive method: it equates acts which by intention are infertile, that is, marital acts chosen while the wife is not fertile, and acts which are rendered infertile. The authors, in short, see no moral difference between contraception and recourse to the rhythm of the cycle. The latter is simply another way of contracepting. [25] They do so because they consider the intentions involved to be the same in both cases. The intention common to both is to avoid a pregnancy, perhaps for a good reason. I will return to this matter below. The central claim of this passage is that the moral object specifying what couples who responsibly contracept individual acts of marital congress are doing is fostering love responsibly toward a generous fecundity. Their aim, their intention is to nourish simultaneously the procreative and unitive purposes of their marriage. While it can be granted that this is the further intention or end for whose sake contraception is chosen, this claim simply ignores the couples present intention, or their choice of means to achieve this end, this further intention. This claim is rooted in the idea that we can identify the moral object specifying a human act only by considering the act in its totality. According to this method of making moral decisions, it is not possible to determine the moral species of an actionwhether it is good or badwithout taking into account the [further] intention or end for whose sake one does what one does along with the foreseeable consequences for the persons concerned. If one does this, so the argument goes, one can conclude that, if the choice to contracept individual acts is directed to the end of nourishing conjugal love so that the good of procreation can also be served, then one can say that what the spouses are doingthe moral object of their choiceis to foster conjugal love toward a generous fecundity, obviously something good, not bad. This reasoning is utterly specious. In essence, it re-describes the contraceptive act, in fact, a
whole series of contraceptive acts, in terms of hoped-for benefits. The remote or further end (which serves as the proportionate good) for whose sake the couple contracepts individual acts of sexual union may well be, as noted above, to nourish simultaneously the unitive and procreative goods of marriage. This is the hoped-for end, and intending it is good. However, the human acts freely chosen to attain this end must be morally evaluated independently of the hoped-for end. And the human acts freely chosen for this purpose are acts of contraception, and the couple has freely chosen to contracept. That is their present intention, as distinct from the further intention of fostering love responsibly. This specious moral reasoning simply conceals the fact that the couple are indeed contracepting, i.e., freely choosing to impede, here and now, in this act of sexual union, the coming to be of new human life. This is the moral object specifying their act, and not the future benefits they hope to gain by acting in this way. There is, moreover, no intrinsic relationship between the means they choosecontraceptionand their hopedfor benefits. Contraception itself does not foster love or serve procreation; indeed, couples who contracept may separate, become alienated, and divorce because of contraception and not foster love responsibly. The moral methodology used here, in other words, is consequentialistic or proportionalist. It fails to recognize that the morality of human acts, as John Paul II has so correctly said in his encyclical on the moral life, Veritatis splendor, depends primarily and fundamentally on the object rationally chosen by the deliberate will (no. 78). With respect to contraception that object is not to foster love responsibly toward a generous fecundity or to nourish simultaneously the unitive and procreative goods of marriage. As we saw earlier in this paper, in choosing to contracept one chooses to do something, prior to, during, or subsequent to a freely chosen genital act, precisely to impede procreation. [26] One chooses to so because one reasonably believes that a new human life could come to be through this chosen act, and one wills that that life not come to be and thus seeks to impede its coming into being. But this, as we have seen, in an anti-life kind of act. The consequentialistic, proportionalistic methodology justifying contraception and leading, as we have seen, to the justification of other deeds (the killing of the innocent, sodomy, etc.) was soundly and rightly repudiated by John Paul II in Veritatis splendor. A central theme of this methodology, as we have seen, is the denial of universally true moral norms, allowing no exceptions, prohibiting intrinsically evil acts. The central theme of Veritatis splendor, to the contrary, was precisely, as John Paul II himself declared, the reaffirmation of the universality and immutability of the moral commandments, particularly those which prohibit always and without exception intrinsically evil acts (no. 115). We have now seen the dualistic anthropology and proportionalistic or consequentialistic moral methodology underlying the defense of contraceptionand the deadly deeds characteristic of the culture of death: abortion, euthanasia, the manufacturing of human embryos, etc. To be continued ...
