A Measure of position determines the

position of a single value in relation to

other values in a sample or a
population data set.

PERCENTILE
QUARTILE
The quartiles are the score points
which divide a distribution into four
equal parts

Q1 Q2 Q3
QUARTILE rules
To compute:
Q1 (lower quartile) = 0.25 (n+1)
 If lower quartile (Q1) falls halfway between
two integers, ROUND UP the answer.
Q2 (middle quartile) = 0.5 (n+1)

Q3 (upper quartile) = 0.75 (n+1)

 If upper quartile (Q3) falls halfway between
two integers, ROUND DOWN the answer.
Example #1:
Find the quartiles
(Q1, Q2, and Q3) of the
scores of 7 students in
their 20 – item Math
Quiz, given the data set;
4, 8, 12, 15, 2, 7, 20, 5, 9,
18, 16, 6, 10.
Solution:
2,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,12,15,16,18,20 n =13
Q1 (lower quartile) Q1 (lower quartile)
= 0.25 (n+1) = 0.75 (n+1)
= 0.25 (13+1) = 0.75 (13+1)
= 0.25 (14) Q2 (middle quartile) = 0.75 (14)
= 3.5 = 0.5 (n+1) = 10.5
=4 = 0.5 (13+1) = 10
= 0.5 (14)
Q1= 6 =7 Q3= 15
Q2= 9
Example #2:
What is the value of
the upper quartile (Q3)
in the following set of
data;
19, 20, 22, 23, 28, 30,
39, 43, 45, 48, 49, 50
Example #3:
What is the value of
the middle quartile
(Q2) in the following
set of data;
19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24,
27, 28, 30.
Example #4:
What is the value of
the lower quartile (Q1)
in the following set of
data;
9, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 21,
23, 26, 29, 30.
DECILE
The deciles are the values that divide
into ten equal parts.

𝒌
𝑫𝒌 = (𝒏 + 𝟏)
𝟏𝟎
Example #1:
A researcher collects
data on the number of
siblings of SHS
students in ISAP, and
his study yields the
following;
3, 1, 6, 4, 10, 9, 3, 9, 5,
4, 2, 7, 8. Find D3, D6,
D8.
Solution:
1, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 9, 10 n =13
𝑫𝟑 𝑫𝟔 𝑫𝟖
𝟑 𝟔
𝑫𝟑 = (𝟏𝟑 + 𝟏) 𝑫𝟔 = (𝟏𝟑 + 𝟏) 𝟖
𝟏𝟎 𝟏𝟎 𝑫𝟖 = (𝟏𝟑 + 𝟏)
𝟏𝟎
𝟑 𝟔
𝑫𝟑 = (𝟏𝟒) 𝑫𝟔 = (𝟏𝟒) 𝟖
𝟏𝟎 𝟏𝟎 𝑫𝟖 = (𝟏𝟒)
𝟏𝟎
𝑫𝟑 = 4.2 or 4 𝑫𝟑 = 8.4 or 8 𝑫𝟑 = 11.2 or 11

𝑫𝟑 = 3 𝑫𝟔 = 6 𝑫𝟖 = 9
Example #2:
The following are the ages
of Mathematics Professors
at Cagayan State University
Caritan Campus;
25, 27, 29, 30, 35, 37, 42, 43,
45, 47, 50. At what ages
does the 3rd decile will fall?
Example #3:
The heights in centimeters
of selected 1st year
BSED/BPED students in
ISAP are as follows;
150, 153, 159, 162, 169, 170,
175, 180. Which of the
following is the 6th decile?
PERCENTILE
Percentiles are the values that divide
into 100 equal parts.

To compute the position of percentiles,

use the formula.

𝒌
𝑷𝒌 = (𝒏 + 𝟏)
𝟏𝟎𝟎
Example #1:
The following are
scores in MMW test:
2, 3, 18, 20, 6, 5, 15,
12, 10, 8. Find the
value corresponding
to the 34th percentile.
Solution:
2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 18, 20 n =10

𝟑𝟒
𝑷𝟑𝟒 = (𝟏𝟎 + 𝟏)
𝟏𝟎𝟎

𝟑𝟒
𝑷𝟑𝟒 = (𝟏𝟏)
𝟏𝟎𝟎

𝑷𝟑𝟒 = 3.74 or 4 𝑷𝟑𝟒 = 6

Example #2:
In the set of scores,
14, 18, 19, 20, 24, 25,
29, 32, and 35, which
of the following is the
median score of 50th
percentile (P50)?
EXAMPLE:
Mhia says the entrance exam of CSU
is so difficult. There were 500 test
takers including her. Her score is 60
out of 80. her score belong to the 1st
quartile. Would you agree with Mhia
that test is difficult?
EXAMPLE:
Mr. Medina gave a test to his students.
Erwin finished their test in 40 minutes.
This time is the 2nd Decile of the allotted
time. What does this mean
EXAMPLE:
Jenny is a secretary in one big company in
Imus Cavite. Her salary is 40,000 pesos
and in the 7th Decile. Should Jenny be glad
about her salary or not?
EXAMPLE:
Twenty five scores in a mathematics test
were recorded and the 76 was the 50th
percentile. Only one student got a score of
76.
