Subject: Math

Grade Level: Kindergarten

: Identify and recognize the letter and their sounds

Learning across curriculum:

1) English Language Arts: Students can practice identifying and recognizing letters
and their sounds through reading and phonics activities.

2) Science: Students can explore the sounds of different animals and learn to
associate them with the corresponding letters.

3) Music: Students can learn songs that emphasize the sounds of different letters,
helping them recognize and remember them.

Review Motivation:

Teaching Strategy: Storytelling

Instructional Materials: Picture books, flashcards

1) Read a story that focuses on letters and their sounds, engaging students in the
narrative and encouraging them to identify the letters and their corresponding
sounds.

2) Use flashcards with images of objects that start with different letters. Ask students
to guess the letter and its sound based on the picture.

Activity 1: Letter Sound Hunt

Teaching Strategy: Cooperative Learning

Materials: Letter cards, objects with corresponding letter sounds

Significance: This activity allows students to actively search for objects that start
with different letters, reinforcing their understanding of letter sounds.

Instructions:

1) Place letter cards around the classroom or outdoor area.

2) Divide students into small groups and provide each group with a basket or bag.

3) Instruct students to find objects that start with the letters shown on the cards and
collect them in their baskets.

Rubric - Criteria: Correct identification of objects (5 pts), Correct association of

objects with letter sounds (5 pts)

Assessment Questions:

1) What objects did you find that start with the letter "A"?

2) Can you name three objects that start with the letter "B"?

3) Which letter did you find the most objects for? Why?

Activity 2: Alphabet Art

Teaching Strategy: Visual Aids

Materials: Construction paper, markers, glue, magazines

Significance: This activity allows students to express understanding of letter sounds

through artistic creation while reinforcing letter recognition.

Instructions:

1) Provide each student with a piece of construction paper and a marker.

2) Instruct students to choose a letter and draw or write objects that start with that
letter around it.

3) Encourage students to cut out pictures from magazines that correspond to the
chosen letter and glue them onto their artwork.
Rubric - Criteria: Correct identification of objects (5 pts), Creativity and effort in the
artwork (5 pts)

Assessment Questions:

1) Can you explain why you chose the objects you included in your artwork?

2) How does your artwork represent the sound of the letter you chose?

3) Which letter was the most challenging for you to find objects for? Why?

Activity 3: Sound Sorting

Teaching Strategy: Differentiation

Materials: Sound cards (with different letter sounds), objects, pictures

Significance: This activity helps students practice sorting objects and pictures
based on their initial letter sounds, reinforcing their understanding of letter-sound
correspondence.

Instructions:

1) Prepare sound cards with different letter sounds.

2) Divide students into small groups and provide each group with a set of objects
and pictures.

3) Instruct students to sort the objects and pictures based on their initial letter sounds
and place them in separate piles.

Rubric - Criteria: Correct sorting of objects and pictures (5 pts), Clear explanation of
sorting criteria (5 pts)
Assessment Questions:

1) How did you decide which pile to place each object/picture in?

2) Can you think of any objects or pictures that could be sorted into multiple piles
based on their sounds? Why?

3) Which letter sound did you find the easiest to sort? Why?

ANALYSIS:

Activity 1 - The letter sound hunt activity allowed students to actively engage in
finding objects that start with different letters, their understanding of letter sounds. It
connected to the main objective by providing hands-on practice in identifying and
recognizing the letter and their sounds.

Activity 2 - The alphabet art activity encouraged students to express their

understanding of letter sounds creatively. By drawing and gluing objects that start
with a chosen letter, students reinforced their recognition of letters and their
corresponding sounds.

Activity 3 - The sound sorting activity provided students with opportunities to practice
sorting objects and pictures based on their initial letter sounds. This activity
reinforced their understanding of letter-sound correspondence and helped them
develop their sorting skills.

ABSTRACTION:

The main objective of this lesson was to identify and recognize the letter and their
sounds. Through engaging activities and practice, students deepened their
understanding of letter sounds and their corresponding letters. They also learned to
associate objects and pictures with specific letter sounds, enhancing their letter
recognition skills.

APPLICATION:

Teaching Strategy: Experiential Learning

Task 1 - Take students on a nature walk and ask them to listen for sounds that start
with different letters. After the walk, discuss and categorize the sounds they heard.

Task 2 - Provide students with a set of alphabet flashcards and ask them to find
objects around their homes that start with each letter. Have them present their
findings to the class.
ASSESSMENT:

Teaching Strategy: Direct Instruction

Instructional Materials: Flashcards, whiteboard, markers

Question 1 - Show the flashcard for the letter "S" and ask the students to say its
sound. Repeat this for three other letters.

Question 2 - Write the letter "M" on the whiteboard and ask the students to come up
with three words that start with that letter.

Question 3 - Show a picture of an object and ask the students to identify the letter
sound it starts with.

Assignment:

1) Assignment Overview: Ask students to create a mini alphabet book, where they
draw or find pictures of objects that start with each letter and write the corresponding
letter sound. This will help reinforce their letter recognition and sound identification
skills.

2) Actual Assessment Question: Choose a letter and draw a picture of an object that
starts with that letter. Write the letter sound beside the picture.
