CIV3105: CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY
FINAL EXAMINATIONS FIRST SEMESTER 2021
DATE: Monday 20th September 2021 TIME: 9:00AM to 12:00PM

INSTRUCTIONS:
[1] This examination paper consists two sections, section A and B.
[2] Answer all questions in Section A and 4 of 5 questions in Section B.
[3] Submit answers in the provided format.
[4] Make any reasonable assumptions where you deem necessary.
[5] The weight of each question is indicated.

SECTION B (Traditional )
Question 2 [20 Marks]
a) Discuss the impact of common construction materials on the environment and consider how
this could be reduced. [10 marks]
b) Discuss three different applications of structural steel in building construction [6 marks]
c) What are the material and procedural requirements for installation of a subsurface drainage
for a simple residential building? [4 marks]
Question 3 [20 Marks]
a) State any five types of construction equipment and discuss their application. (5 marks)
b) State and discuss the principal considerations in selection of construction plant/
equipment. (6 marks)
c) Define scaffolding and state the different types of scaffolding. (5 marks)
d) Discuss the requirements of a good formwork. (4 marks)

Question 4 [20 Marks]


(a) Discuss issues of interest to a site engineer in implementing site control of materials and
workmanship at delivery, storage and conveyance stages for the following materials used in
construction of a high-rise building; (10 marks)
i. Timber
ii. Steel reinforcement
iii. Cement
iv. Course and fine aggregates
v. Bricks and blocks

(b) Describe how a typical residential bungalow dwelling constructed using continuous
loadbearing clay brick walls and with a truss rafter pitched roof resists dead, imposed and
wind loads. Use sketched to illustrate your answer. (10 marks)
Question 5 [20 Marks]
a) Discuss the functional requirements of internal walls for houses, and the influence that a
loadbearing or non-loadbearing function may have on the selection of a suitable internal
wall construction. (3 marks)
b) Define shoring and state at least FIVE common situations where shoring may be applied
in building structures. (5 marks)
c) Discuss SIX factors to be taken into consideration when planning a construction site layout.
(12 marks)
Question 6 [20 Marks]
a) What are the causes and manifestations of dampness in buildings? (2 marks)
b) State and define the three general structural waterproofing approaches applicable to
basements and earth retaining structures. (6 marks)
c) Describe the site investigation process explaining the importance of each stage in reference
to a building construction project in Kampala City. (12 marks)
