SIMPLE MACHINES
(LEVER, INCLINED PLANE, WEDGE)

MELC: Manipulate simple machines to describe their characteristics and uses.

(S6FE-IIIg-i-3)

Objectives:

1. Describe the different types of simple machines.

2. Operate simple machines to describe the characteristics and uses.
3. Demonstrate practical and safe use of simple machines.

Simple Machines
What do you use when you want to cut a piece of paper, open a bottle or slice
a piece of fruit? How do different materials you use help you? When you cut a piece
of paper, open a bottle or slice a piece of fruit, you use machines.

You can easily join two wooden planks using hammer and nails. Hammer and
nails are simple machines.

What are simple machines? What are their parts? How do machines help us?

Machines are used to transform, transfer energy, multiply speed or force, and
change the direction of the force. Simple machines do work in one movement or a
one-type-of-work easing device. Simple machines are simple tools that multiply the
amount of force to make work easier.

Everyone uses machines every day. It is difficult working without machines.

Kinds of Simple Machines

Lever
A lever is composed of straight or bent rigid bar that is free to turn on
the fixed, movable part known as fulcrum.
Effort

Load

Fulcrum

Parts of the lever

Parts of a Lever
1. Resistance (R) or load - a force that is being lifted by the effort.
2. Effort (E) - a force that lifts the resistance.
3. Fulcrum (F) - the fixed movable point where the rigid bar moves.
4. Resistant arm (RA) - the distance of the resistance to the fulcrum
5. Effort Arm (EA) – the distance of effort to the fulcrum

Classes of Levers
The three classes of levers vary in the placement of the effort, resistance, and
the fulcrum along the bar.

First-class Lever (RFE or EFR)

The fulcrum is between the effort and the load or resistance like the seesaw.

Load Effort

Fulcrum
Class 1 lever Examples of first-class levers

Second-class Lever (FRE or ERF)

The fulcrum lies at one end, the effort is applied at the other end, and the load
is in the middle, as in a wheelbarrow.

Effort Load

Fulcrum
Class 2 lever
Examples of second-class levers
Third-class Lever (REF or FER)

The fulcrum is at one end, but the load is at the other end, and the effort is
applied in the middle, as in a human forearm.

Load Effort

Fulcrum

Class 3 lever Examples of third-class levers

Inclined Plane
The inclined plane is a flat supporting surface tilted at an angle, with one end
higher than the other. It is used in raising and lowering a load. An inclined plane
lessens the effort exerted over a distance and changes the direction from straight up
to along the angle of the plane of the effort applied. The lesser the angle of the inclined
plane, the longer the distance and the lesser the effort needed.

Inclined planes are widely used in form of loading ramps to load and unload
goods on ships, trucks, and airplanes. Wheelchair ramps allow people in wheelchairs
to get over obstacles without exceeding their strength.

Wedge
A wedge is a double inclined plane that is sharpened to an end. It can be used
to separate two objects or portions of an object, lift up an object, or hold an object in
place. The thinner the wedge is, the lesser effort is needed to cut objects.

Safety Measures in Handling Simple Machines

Simple machines make work easier and faster. However, if we do not handle
them with care, they can harm us. Thus, we must practice precautionary measures in
using them to avoid accidents. Here are some safety measures to remember.

1. Never play with sharp and pointed tools.

2. When carrying sharp and pointed tools like knife, position the pointed edge
downward.
3. Keep sharp and pointed tools in a tool box.
4. Check the ladder if it is sturdy before using it.
5. Do not leave any objects on stairways.
6. Be sure that any tool is in good condition before using it.
7. Always keep small children away when using a sharp tool.
8. When you are through using any tool. Put it back in its proper place.
