LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET IN MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY

QUARTER 4 WEEK 5

Name of Student: ________________________________________________ Section: _________________

I. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT:
Information comes in many forms. It can be through words or texts, pictures, graphics, audio, or videos.
In the previous LAS, you were introduced to the dimensions of text information and media, visual information
and media, and audio information and media. This time, you will get to know three more sources of information.
Knowing these different media can help you learn in the easiest and the best way that suits you.

II. LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Learning Competency: Describe the dimensions of the different forms of information and media.

Learning Outcomes: The learner is able to describe the dimensions of:

a. motion information and media
b. manipulative information and media
c. multimedia information and media

Information Sheet No. 1: Dimensions of Information and Media

Motion Information and Media

Motion media is a form of media that has the appearance of moving text and graphics on a display.
Its purpose is to communicate information in multiple ways.
Source: (Roblyer, 2006)
To produce motion media, a graphic organizer of illustrations or images are displayed in a sequence
to create a story. This is called storyboard. Storyboards are blueprints for motion media. It gives
the producers a clear picture of how a story will flow.

An example of motion media is animation. Animation is the process of designing, drawing, making
layouts and preparation of photographic sequences which are integrated in the multimedia and gaming
products. Animation involves the exploitation and management of still images to generate the illusion of
movement. Examples of animation are the Graphic Interchange Formats (GIFS), Flash, Dynamic HTML,
and Shockwave.
Definition Source: (https://www.indiaeducation.net/animation/what-is-animation.html)
Motion pictures also use video formats or video codecs. A codec is a software that compresses
and decompresses video so it can be stored and played back.

Like all other sources of information, motion media has its own pros and cons.
Advantages of Motion Media
1. Great way of demonstrating and guiding step by step processes and viewing phenomena that
can’t be viewed directly.
2. Flexible pace (rewind, fast forward and pause) making repeated observation of skill possible
3. Accessible and motivating
4. Dramatization (recreation of history and personalities)
5. Connection (learners from different communities, backgrounds and cultures can be linked with
others)
Disadvantages of Motion Media
1. No student-teacher relationship (questions can’t be asked and students may be left uninvolved)
2. Unpredicted problems (audio and visual difficulties)
3. Misinterpretation of intended messages
4. Equipment and materials are expensive (e.g. DVD player, TV, computer and other gadgets)

Manipulative Information and Media

Manipulative information media, also known as interactive media, refers to materials and
online tools, programs, and applications that are used for hands-on learning. It uses mobile
applications that connect people and enables them to explore things available on the net. One
characteristic of manipulative media is interactivity which allows communication between the user
and the computer software. Examples are mobile gaming that requires participation from the gamer
and online training.

Platforms of Multimedia
Mobile Applications are not used in laptops and desktop computers, but rather in small wireless
computer gadgets like smartphones and tablets.
3D TV portrays a 3D effect to the audience and will make them believe the picture is like the real world in
depth, height, and width.
Video Games (Multi-player) can be used with a TV screen where two or more electronically play
through a computer program.
Role-Playing Games (RPG) is a unique amusement where players act out fictional roles within the
storyline and make their own decisions.
Massively Multiplayer Online Playing Game (MMORPG) is any story-driven online video-game in
which a player, taking on the persona of a character in a virtual fantasy world, interacts with a large
number of other players. Source: (Philippine Commission on Higher Education, 2016)
Interactive websites embrace online exams, survey, exercises, and pools.
Virtual Reality and Immersive Environments provide three-dimensional pictures or likely real images
when a person uses a special digital gadget like helmets with an inner screen or sensor gloves.
Social Media links people from all over the world through chatting, commenting, or posting images, and
messages on social media accounts like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Advantages of Manipulative Information Media

1. Interactivity – allowing communication to happen between the user and the computer software
2. Availability – it can be easily accessed making learning just one click away
3. Engaging - It is fun and increases confidence and motivation among learners
Disadvantages of Manipulative Information Media
1. It is not available to everyone and is expensive.
2. There will be a lot of distractions in using interactive media.
3. Students may tend to be dependent on them.
4. It depends on the availability of resources and requires some basic computer skills among users.

Multimedia Information and Media

Multimedia is the field concerned with the computer-controlled integration of text, graphics,
drawings, still and moving images (Video), animation, audio, and any other media where every type of
information can be represented, stored, transmitted and processed digitally.
Source: (Dave Marshall)
Multimedia is the term used to represent combination of visual and audio materials gathered from
various resources and then added into one single combination. Precisely, term multimedia is used to
refer visual and audio materials into a single common presentation which can be played in a computer
including CD ROM or digital video, internet or web technology, streaming audio or video and data
projection system etc.

Multimedia is considered as one best educational technique since it involves the senses like seeing
and hearing. It makes the reading process more dynamic compared to the traditional way of reading the
text from a book. It also clarifies ambiguity due to the presence of illustrations and drawings and entails
questions and discussions in the classroom.
The basic elements of multimedia are text, graphic, animation, audio, and video. It can be
categorized into linear and non-linear presentation. In linear presentation, active content progresses
often without any navigational control for the viewer such as a cinema presentation. Non-linear uses
interactivity to control progress as with a self-paced computer-based training.
Advantages of Multimedia Information Media
1. Students can search a variety of different topics using multimedia presentations.
2.Teachers can use multimedia presentations to make lessons more interesting.
3. It is very user-friendly and flexible.
4. It is multi sensorial. It uses a lot of the user’s senses while making use of multimedia.
5. It is integrated and interactive.
Disadvantages of Multimedia Information Media
1. Information overload
2. It can be expensive.
3. Large files like video and audio has an effect of the time it takes for your presentation to load.
4. Requires a larger computer to store the files

III. ACTIVITIES:
General Direction: Read and understand the directions for each activity. Answer by writing DIRECTLY on
the activity sheet.

of participants. Educators can share lesson plans, give instruction, swap files with students, and
communicate directly with the group or individuals via chat, all within the app.
_____ 10. It is a game-based classroom response system played by the whole class in real time. Multiple-
choice questions are projected on the screen. Students answer the questions with their
smartphone, tablet or computer.
