Raising the Dead for Fun and Profit
During the process of upgrading the IOS (software) on an Ovation switch the unthinkable
happened; the power failed, your PC froze, or you experienced a “cockpit” error. Now every
time the switch attempts to reboot the console displays the ghastly message "Error Loading
Flash" and the switch is very “dead”. The corrupt or missing software image has left you the
proud owner of a very expensive “brick” and in desperate need of CPR. The following
procedure describes the process to resuscitate the victim (the switch, that is).
Step 1. Connect a PC running HyperTerminal to the console port of the switch (see the detailed
instructions contained in the “Configuration Guidelines” referenced in the switch
drawing).
When a switch is unable to load the software image from flash, it will normally load the
boot helper and bring up a switch: prompt. Occasionally the switch may get stuck in a
continuous boot cycle. If this is the case use the following steps to break the cycle and
get to the switch: prompt.
1. Unplug the switch power cable.
2. Hold down the mode button located on the left side of the front panel, while
reconnecting the power cord. You can release the mode button a second or two after
the LED above port 1 is no longer illuminated.
3. Enter the command:
flash_init
4. Enter the command:
load_helper
Step 3. Delete the corrupt image file from flash, the command to delete a file is:
delete flash:<filename>
Where the <filename> is the name of the file to be deleted (i.e. the highlighted file name
above) for example:
delete flash:c2900XL-h2s-mz-120.5-XP.bin

Step 4. Download the appropriate IOS image-only file from the O’Hara
O:\Network\cisco\firmware directory by clicking the hyperlink to your PC:
• 1X00036 (WS-C2924-XL-EN) c2924.bin
• 1X00093 (WS-C2950-24) c2950.bin
Step 5. Copy the image to the flash (using the xmodem protocol), the command to copy a file is:
copy xmodem: flash:<filename>
Where <filename> is the name of file that you downloaded, for example:
copy xmodem: flash:c2924.bin
From the HyperTerminal, “Transfer” menu select the “Send File…” option, then start
transferring the downloaded file using the “xmodem” protocol.
NOTE: Be sure to start the download within 3 seconds; otherwise, the switch will
timeout the copy command.
Step 6. Sit back and wait! The transfer will take about 45 minutes.
Step 7. After the new image has been loaded, boot the switch using the command
boot flash:<filename>
Where <filename> is the name of the file just downloaded, for example:
boot flash:c2924.bin
Step 8. After booting the switch, download a bundled image (.tar file) by following the Software
Upgrade Procedure in the “Configuration Guidelines” referenced in the switch drawing.
NOTE: In the step where you are instructed to rename the highlighted file in flash
you will be renaming c2924.bin to the proper file name.
