Tutorial 2

This document contains the solutions to tutorial questions for a civil engineering course. It determines whether beam sections with different amounts of steel reinforcement are under-reinforced or over-reinforced. It also calculates the nominal ultimate moment strength of a reinforced concrete beam section and designs a beam to resist a specified bending moment. The questions cover key concepts in reinforced concrete design such as balancing of steel and concrete forces and proportioning the steel area.

Tutorial 2 for CSE 30310

Dr Ming-Feng KAI
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
Q1: Determine whether the section shown in Fig.1 is under/over-reinforced with fcu = 30
N/mm2, fy =500 N/mm2; and with the following values of Ast: (a) 1140 mm2; (b) 1415 mm2;
(c) 2413 mm2; and (d) 3217 mm2.

250 mm

450 mm
Ast
50 mm

Fig.1
Answer:
(1) when a=1140 mm2
Fcc = Fst
0.45fcubs=0.87fyAs
s = 146.93 mm
x=s/0.9=163.3mm < 0.5d
So under-reinforced!
(2) when a=1415 mm2
Fcc = Fst
0.45fcubs=0.87fyAs
s = 182.38 mm
x=s/0.9=202.64 mm < 0.5d
So under-reinforced!
(3) when a=2413 mm2
Fcc = Fst
0.45fcubs=0.87fyAs
s = 311.00 mm
x=s/0.9=345.56 mm > 0.5d
So over-reinforced!
(4) when a=3217 mm2
Fcc = Fst
0.45fcubs=0.87fyAs
s = 414.64 mm
x=s/0.9=460.71 mm > 0.5d
So over-reinforced!
Q2: Determine the nominal ultimate moment strength of the beam section shown in Fig.1.
Assume Ast = 4#20 diameter = 1257 mm2, fy = 415 MPa, and fcu = 30 MPa.

250 mm

Answer:
Fcc = Fst
0.45fcubs=0.87fyAs
s = 134.47 mm
x=s/0.9=149.4 mm < 0.5d
So under-reinforced! Steel yields!

z=d-s/2= 382.76 mm

M= fyAsz =199.76 KN*m

Q3: Design a singly reinforced concrete beam, subjected to an ultimate moment of 130
kNm. Assume fy = 415 MPa, and fcu = 30 MPa. Due to architectural consideration, the
breath and overall depth of the beam are restricted to 230 mm and 450 mm, respectively.
Assume effective concrete cover as 50 mm.

230 mm

400 mm

Ast
