DERIVATIVES OF

TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS
Derivative of sin x
For y = sin x , we will apply the four-step rule to determine the
derivative of this trigonometric function.
It must be kept in mind that familiarity with the trigonometric identities
can help a lot in determining the derivatives involving trigonometric
functions in an easier way.
d) y = csc ½ x

y’ = - ½ csc ½ x cot ½ x
e) y = cot x sec x

for this problem we have two options , we can answer this directly using
product formula or rewrite the given function using the trigonometric
relations:
comparing the two solutions we can see that transforming it to a simpler
form using the trigonometric relations has resulted into a simpler
differentiation process. Although it seems that the two solutions seemed
to led to two different answers , the two values are really equivalent as shown
below:
= - csc x cot x
Or we can solve this by applying trigonometric identities
DERIVATIVES OF INVERSE TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS

Derivative of arcsin u
Let y = arcsin u where u=f(x)
Derivative of arctan u
Let y = arctan u
tan y = u
The remaining three inverse trigonometric functions are derived in the
same manner and is left to the student as exercises. The following is
the complete list of inverse trigonometric functions and derivatives
Solution:
a) y = arcsin (2x-5)
