What is It

Handling and Disposal Practices of Materials for Irrigation Work, Following

Policy and Procedures.
Efficient Water Use and Disposal
To determine the right amount of water to use, consider the following:
1. Rice variety. You may need more water for the late maturing varieties
than early maturing varieties.
2. Season. Wet season crops need less water than dry season crops.
3. Types of soil. Clay or clay loam soil needs less water than light soil such
as sand.
4. Presence of weeds. Flooding the field always prevent the growth of weeds.

Water may be lost through the following processes:

1. Evaporation. It is the direct loss of water from the water surface or moist
soil surface. The amount of water that evaporates is influenced by high
intensity of sunlight, strong and dry wind, and high temperature. Second
crop rice production which is on time with the summer season needs more
water to sustain growth and yield.

2. Transpiration. It is the loss of water from the leaves. Transpiration is

affected by the weather condition. More water will be lost during dry season
which explains the need of constant irrigation.

3. Seepage. Water moves sideways within the soil. It may pass through the
dike or below the ground. This can be minimized if the dikes and levees are
well-maintained.

4. Percolation. It is the downward flow of water. Its occurrence is high if the

soil is sandy, deep, and has a deep-water table. 121 Well-puddled rice
paddies minimize percolation and tend to hold water efficiently.
Terms:
Irrigation – the application of water needed by the plant by means of any
method
Drainage –a shallow canal to remove excess water from the field when not
needed

Competent person - one who is capable of identifying existing and
predictable deficiencies in mobile cranes and boom trucks.

General Information in handling equipment and materials in irrigation work:

1.The irrigation system is normally pressurized from April to Mid-October.
2. No backhoe work or similar activity is permitted on site without first
performing an irrigation location process.
3. Personal injury can occur in the event repairs are made without following
protocols which includes ensuring the area of repair is properly isolated.
4. Remember that system pressurization means that pressure exist at the
base of the sprinkler.
5.No employee or any other person is permitted to drive any instrument or
object into the ground without authorization from the head office.
6. Only authorized employees are permitted in the pump houses.
7. When performing service work near body of water, at least two employees
must be involved with a third employee available with a cell phone.
General Description of the process:
There are many irrigation systems so there are some variables with each
property but the principles should remain the same. When a system is being
pressurized in the spring, it would be recommended to run the system at a
reduced operating pressure for a couple of cycles. This is completed to allow
the air to escape from the system.
When the heads are required to be turned on manually (sometimes they will
not pop up by radio command for a variety of reasons) at no time should the
person’s face or body be positioned over the body of the sprinkler. The
manual key can be inserted, and at arm’s length in a crouched position (on
one knee) and looking away from the head. It would also be good idea to
wear helmet, with face shield as there was an incident where the above work
was being done and because the head was located in the lower part of the
golf course there was a buildup of compressed air. The head did separate
and caught an irrigation tech in the mouth.
Doing Repair Work
If a quick couple is available within the isolated area, it should be inserted
to make sure the proper valves are isolated and working properly and also
decrease most of the pressure on the system. If possible, one at the higher
elevation and one at the lower elevation would be ideal. The valve(s) should
remain turned on to make sure pressure in the system does not build back
up if there is a slow leak in an isolation valve.

4 NegOr_Q3_Agri-CropProd10_Module7_v2
Sprinkler with the close proximity of the repair should be activated
(manually or radio controlled) to release any built-up pressure in the specific
area of the repair and to confirm valves are isolated and pressure has been
reduced.
During Shutdown at the end of the Season
It is important to not put any worker in the line of fire when blowing air
through the system in preparation for the end of the season’s shutdown.
There is always a possibility that a sprinkler head could be plugged and over
pressurizing the line could cause it to blow apart. Any person within that
area could suffer an injury which is why this should only be done when
there is no golfer on that section of the course.
The most vital step is to remove pressure from system and reconfirm that
the system pressure is reduced (and not allowed to rebuild) before removing
the lower snap ring. Just because it is assumed the valves are closed,
pressure is still trapped with the zone. Reduce with quick coupler’s ideally
high and low elevation points, run sprinklers in close proximity of sprinkler
being worked on to reconfirm pressure has been reduced. Proper PPE
should be used when removing lower snap ring/valve. Please remember that
water is not compressible, but air is there have been serious injuries
resulting from not bleeding the lines to atmospheric pressure!

The main characteristics of the irrigation equipment are:

 Material, e.g. galvanized steel, rigid PVC, etc;
 Size, i.e. the nominal diameter (DN) of the ISO metric range in
millimeters (16–160 mm) and/or of the BSP threaded range in inches
(–4 inches);
 Type of joint, e.g. threaded, quick coupling, and solvent welded, etc;
 Working pressure PN (nominal pressure) or PR (pressure rating) in
bars, e.g. 6.0 bars;
 National and/or international standards conformed to, e.g. DIN, ISO,
BS, ASTM, EN

General Safety Training

 General safety training for any type of system involves the following
areas:
o Understanding Equipment and Installation Requirements (What
systems look like).
o Identifying Common Hazards.
o Understanding Safe and Unsafe Work Practices.
o Communicating Unsafe Equipment and Installations to
Appropriate Entities.

 There are different types of potential accidents that can cause injury
or death when working on or around irrigation systems including:

5 NegOr_Q3_Agri-CropProd10_Module7_v2
o Electrical Contacts/Accidents
o Contacts/Entanglements with Moving Parts
o Chemical Exposures/Poisonings
o Falls from the System
o Drowning
o Physical (Head, Eye, Ear, Hand & Foot) Accidents

Irrigation Systems Contain

 A Pumping System
o One or more pumps generally powered by fossil fuel engines or
electric motors.
o Connects to water distribution system.
 A Distribution System
o Many different types (ditch, gated pipe, center pivots, side-roll,
big-gun, etc.), many utilizing electrical powered motors and
drivetrains to move the system over/across the field. Pumping
System Irrigation

Irrigation System Maintenance

The second link the irrigation safety chain involves maintaining properly
installed systems in good shape.
o Many irrigation systems are poorly maintained and fall into states
of disrepair.
o Many systems have been modified or repaired using substandard
equipment.

Safe Work Practices

Even if the equipment and installation is correct and the system has been
well maintained, people still need to use safe work practices to avoid the
normal hazards associated with operation of the equipment.

Irrigation Safety Requirements

 Manufacturers must design equipment to safety standards.
o Dealers must install equipment correctly.
o Owners, Irrigators and Service people must maintain equipment
correctly.
o Owners, Irrigators and Technicians must use Safe Work Practices

Improper Maintenance of Systems

 Common problems related to improper or poor maintenance of systems
include:
o Open Electrical Enclosures (boxes)
o Broken or Damaged Electrical Conduit
o Use of Damaged Electrical Power Cords
o Improper Fuse Replacement
