Scenario You are completing a work placement with the local football club in its
administration department. You have been asked to produce a spreadsheet to
manage information about the club’s season-ticket holders.
You will produce design documents for a spreadsheet solution to meet your
manager’s needs as detailed below.
Data input
The data entry should be user-friendly. The type of ticket should be validated on
entry. Applicants are normally allocated their requested seating area but, where
no choice has been made, the area with the most space left should be allocated.
Worksheet 2: Summary of information
This should hold a summary of the totals of the season-ticket applications and
ticket allocations. A series of calculations will be needed, as well as conversion
of some data to charts, in order to generate management information.
The worksheets can be stored in one spreadsheet file and connected using a
menu.
The solution should include a number of outputs that will help to manage the
information. The developer is asked to design a series of examples to
demonstrate what is possible.

Not expensive but useful step-by step-approach to the software. All examples
use Excel 2010.

This text covers the more advanced topics within the specification, in particular
the data tools features. Not expensive and all examples are in Excel 2010.
Websites
The web addresses below are just three examples of sites that will help learners
with background to the context of the assignment. Learners can, for example,
identify additional fields through season-ticket application forms and identify
management information ideas and requirements. Use an internet search
engine to find similar material for your local club.

For 2B.P2: learners should describe the user requirements and purpose of the
spreadsheet in their designs.
For level 1, as a minimum, learners should identify the purpose and the user
requirements for their spreadsheet design.
For level 1, as a minimum, learners should have created an outline design for their
spreadsheet solution, with guidance. An outline design would contain worksheet layout
and data input diagram. Some annotations should indicate the processes and
appropriate tools/techniques used, e.g. functions and formulas. This will give an
indication of what the product would be like and what it is about.
For 2B.P3: learners should design a spreadsheet solution. This should be a workable
design and should include:
● a worksheet structure diagram including calculations and tools/techniques to be
applied, e.g. cell formatting, functions, formulas, IF statements
● output data presenting the results/outcome
● a test plan.
For 2B.D2: learners should justify their design decision, explaining how they meet the
brief. Learners may wish to do this by annotating their design documents and describing
why (e.g. ‘I have used a function here because …’).
They should also justify why they have chosen a specific design to fulfil the brief
in terms of purpose and user requirements. Learners should explain why alternative
designs were rejected, and consider any constraints.
