Rules to be Followed When Converting the Active Voice to the Passive Voice
There are a few other points that you have to know so that you can use the
two voices effectively. They are as follows:
1. When converting a sentence in the active voice to the passive voice,
the first thing that you have to do is interchange the subject and the
object.
2. The next part of speech you have to focus on is the verb. When
converting the active voice into the passive voice, you just have to
convert the main verb into its past participle or its third form. The
third form of the main verb is the past participle form of the verb.

3. When you are changing the tense of the main verb, make sure you
use an auxiliary verb which maintains the tense the sentence
represents.
4. Always use the preposition, ‘by’ before the subject in a passive
sentence.
5. If there are any adverbs used in the sentence with the active voice,
be sure to include it in the passive voice as well. Do not just drop it
when you convert a sentence in the active voice to the passive voice
or vice-versa.

• Examples of the Active and Passive Voice

Given below are a few examples of how to convert the active voice into the
passive voice.

Analysis
• What is voice? active voice? passive voice?
• When is the by- phrase used?
• When is the passive voice usually used?
• How will you know if the sentence is in the active voice? passive
voice?
• Why is it important to learn how to use these two voices of verbs?

(This will allow learners to express their own ideas and opinions. Also, these
questions require higher order thinking skills).
H. Making
generalizations
Abstraction/Generalization
and abstractions
Ask questions to lead the students to state the following ideas:
about the lesson
Voice is the characteristic of a verb that tells the reader whether

• the subject of the verb is performing the action (active voice)

• the subject of the verb is acted upon (passive voice)

Though the active construction is more commonly used in English, there are
instances when the passive voice is more effective. The passive voice is used
when:
• The doer is not known.
• What happened is more important than who made it happen.
