Cargo Operation Manual

COO 11 Cargo Heating


Procedure to prepare the vessel for loading heated cargo
C/O shall do this procedure prior arriving load port

1) Check maximum allowable loading temperature


Note: Be careful when loading cargoes with heating requirements > 62°C (145°F)
2) Confirm charterers instructions on temperature for carriage and discharge
Note: Inform office if unable to comply with heating instructions prior loading.
3) Confirm below are in good working condition:
a) Boilers
b) Evaporators
c) Control valves
d) Steam lines
4) Ensure enough quantity of:
a) Fuel
b) Distilled water
5) Ensure coils pressure tested within last year
6) Test heating coils for leaks
a) If leaking, attempt repair
b) If unable to repair
- Isolate from the system
- Inform office
7) Ensure steam traps are functioning properly
a) Enough spares onboard
8) Confirm fixed and portable temperature monitoring devices are calibrated
9) Check the manifold gauges
10)Close all valves if heating coil not in use

Procedure for loading Heated Cargo
C/O shall do this procedure

1) Confirm the cargo temperature from loading master


Warning
Do not load cargoes with temperature above the vessels build specifications.
2) Start loading at very slow rate till 1 s t foot
3) Ensure cargo is loaded above the height of heating coils
4) Monitor the temperature regularly

Cargo Heating Set up procedure


C/O shall do this procedure

1) Warm up steam lines on deck


2) Open gradually inlet heating coil valves keeping the condensate return valves shut
3) Open all drain valves (cocks) of heating coil return lines of one tank
4) Open steam to the main heating coil system line at the designed pressure
5) Drain out small amount of water on deck, before opening the return valves
6) Verify that no traces of oil are present in the condensate tank
Note: Traces of oil in the condensate water from the drains indicate leak in the heating coil.
7) Close the steam control valve of the leaking coil
a) Mark it conspicuously to prevent erroneous opening
8) I f no oil traces, fully open and then close the cocks
9) Follow the same procedure for the next tanks
10)Check the heating coil cocks for oil traces at least once a day
11)I f you find oil traces, isolate the leaking coils immediately
12)Monitor observation tanks for condensate return for traces of oil
13)Check all bypass valves for leaks soon after heating starts - Monitor condensate
temperature

Monitoring during voyage procedure
C/O shall do this procedure

1) Record cargo temperature from each cargo tank:


a) Twice a day, at 08:00 and 18:00
b) At 3 different levels
c) Refer to additional charterers instructions as per voyage orders
Note: Unheated cargo for a prolonged period, may have significant temperature’s differences at
different levels and locations.

2) Adjust steam valves of individual tanks as required, based on temperature reading


a) Consider opening more steam for wing and forward tanks
3) Check the temperature of condensate water from each heating coil.
4) Evaluate the heating operation:
- Remaining voyage time
- Current cargo temperature
Caution! Do not heat cargo during adverse weather periods. This can cause excessive heat
losses from the deck steam system

5) Avoid ballast water into ballast tanks adjacent to heated cargo tanks.
a) Consider filling below the DB height
6) Prior arrival discharge port ensure that cargo temperatures are close to the required
discharge temperature.

Discharging heated cargoes procedure
1) Decrease the steam supply.
Warning
Do not postpone the stripping. Ensure each tank’s stripping right after the main cargo line
valve shutting.
2) Stop heating when cargo’s level falls below the heating coils
a) Ensure that tanks are stripped before the temperature is below the pour point
3) Drain all cargo lines and main pumps by stripping them dry into a suitable cargo tank
4) Avoid using stripping line during final stripping
5) Blow the stripping line to avoid freezing of cargo residues

Deck Heater Operation Procedure


C/O shall do this procedure

6) Read makers instructions


a) Consider
- time between ceasing heating and starting cargo discharge
- increasing cargo temperature to slightly higher discharge temperature, before stopping cargo
heating.
Note: At ambient temperatures, cargo temperature drops by 1-2 C°/day without heating.
7) Flush the heater lines to avoid rust particles
Note: Corrosion in branch pipes may occur if the heater has been out of operation.
8) Confirm cargo tanks that require heating
9) Start power packs. Set system pressure to minimum
Note: Cargo pump oil consumption in heating mode is 50-70% of required design consumption.
10)Ensure discharge/stripping valves to pumps are closed
11)Ensure cargo systems set-up and valves tight, to avoid risk of tank overflow or
contamination of grades
12)Close cargo heater inlet valves and open the outlet valves
13)Local control valves to be closed
Caution: Do not combine heating and discharging.
14)Start one pump and run it with hydraulic pressure of approx. 50 bar for 1 minute
Caution: Do not use heat exchangers to heat cargo simultaneously during discharging
due to pipe configuration

15)Move remote pump control handle to maximum position
Note: For high viscosity cargoes run the pumps at higher speed and pressure.
16)Open cargo heater inlet valve slowly to prevent shocks
17)Drain heating medium inlet pipe
18)Adjust the heating flow until suitable temperature increase across the cargo heater is
achieved
Note: Follow Charterer's instruction for max. cargo temp.
19)Start other pumps following the above procedure
a) Circulate oil through deck heater using cargo pumps
Caution: Stop heating immediately if cargo pumps shut down. If not, sensitive cargoes may
be damaged.
20)Close heating medium inlet valve on completion of heating
21)Let cargo pump run for 10 minutes to cool down the heater
22)Stop the respective pump from cargo control panel
23)Drain the cargo heater and piping
24)Close the cargo heater inlet and outlet valves
25)Proceed with the above procedure for the remaining tanks
26)Reduce the hydraulic system pressure to minimum
27)Stop the power packs
28)Drain the heating medium side of the heater by opening both inlet and outlet drain
valves
29)Ensure that the heating medium inlet valve is closed and not leaking
30)Isolate the heater from the cargo line by setting the spectacle flanges in closed position
