Tutorial – 9 (Design of Rolling Contact Bearing)
Q-1 Answer the following Question:
(1) Explain the factors affecting selection of antifriction bearings & Discuss causes of failure of
antifriction bearing.
(2) Explain the static load capacity, dynamic load capacity and equivalent dynamic load capacity
with the complete Derivation.
(3) Discuss Bearing seals, Lubrication & properties of rolling contact bearings.
(4) Derive Stribeck’s Equation.
(5) Write the complete design procedure of Rolling contact bearings.
(6) Explain the bearing materials in detail.

Q-2 Solve the following Examples:

(1) It is required to select a ball bearing suitable for a 50 mm diameter shaft rotating at 1500
rpm. The radial and thrust loads at the bearing are 4500 N and 1600 N respectively. The
value of X and Y factors are 0.56 and 1.2 respectively. Select a proper ball bearing from the
following table for the rating life of 22500 hr. the inner ring rotates & the service factor is 1.

Bearing No. 6010 6210 6310 6410

C in N 21600 35100 61800 87100

(2) A ball bearing is operating on a work cycle consisting of three parts:

 A radial load of 3000 N at 1440 rpm for one quarter cycle
 A radial load of 5000 N at 720 rpm for one half cycle and
 A radial load of 2500 N at 1440 rpm for remaining cycle.
The expected life of the bearing is 10000 hours. Calculate the dynamic load carrying capacity
of the bearing.

(3) The following data refers to ball bearing work cycle:

Calculate the dynamic load rating of the bearing, if the expected bearing life is10000 hrs with
reliability of 95 %.
(4) For SKF 6207 bearing is to operate on the following work cycle.
 Radial load of 6370N at 200 rpm for 25% of the time.
 Radial load of 9080N at 600 rpm for 20% of the time.
 Radial load of 3638N at 400 rpm for 55% of the time.
The inner ring rotates. The loads are steady. Find the expected average life of this bearing in
hours.

(5) A single-row deep groove ball bearing No. 6002 is subjected to an axial thrust of 1000 N and
a radial load of 2200 N. Find the expected life that 50% of the bearings will complete under
this condition. [Static load capacity CO: 2500 N, Dynamic Load Capacity C: 5590N]

(6) A taper roller bearing has a dynamic load capacity of 26 kN. The desired life for 90% of the
bearings is 8000 h and the speed is 300 rpm. Calculate the equipment radial load that the
bearing can carry.

(7) A transmission shaft rotating at 720 rpm & transmitting power from the pulley P to the spur
gear G is shown in fig. The belt tensions & the gear tooth forces are as follows:
P1 = 498 N; P2 = 166 N; Pr = 181 N; Pt = 497 N;
The weight of the pulley is 100 N. the dia. of the shaft at bearing B 1 & B2 is 10 mm & 20 mm
resp. the load factor is 2.5 & the expected life for 90% of the bearings is 8000 h. select single
row deep groove ball bearings at B1 & B2.

(8) A single row deep groove ball bearing is subjected to a radial force of 8 kN and a thrust force
of 3 kN. The values of X & Y factors are 0.56 & 1.5 resp. the shaft rotates at 1200 rpm. The
diameter of the shaft is 75 mm & bearing No. 6315 (C = 112000 N) is selected for this
application. (i) Estimate the life of this bearing with 90% reliability & (ii) Estimate the
reliability for 20000 h life.
(9) Single row deep groove ball bearing 6010 is subjected to an axial thrust of 1200 N and radial
load 2400 N. Find the expected life that 50% of the bearing will complete under this
condition. C0= 13200 N, C = 21600 N. consider following table.
