3 BME06101 Design of Machine Element-II
Time : 3 Hours. Total Marks: 60
Min. Passing Marks: 21
Attempt five questions selecting one question from each Unit. There is internal choice from Unit I to Unit V. Marks
of each question or its parts are indicated against each question / parts. Draw neat sketches wherever necessary
to illustrate the answer. Assume missing data suitably (if any) and clearly indicate the same in the answer.
Use of following supporting material is permitted during examination for this subject.

1. --Design data book-- 2. --------------NO--------------------

UNIT - I
Q.1 (a) What do you understand by Stress concentration? How do you take it into consideration (6)
in case of a component subjected to dynamic loading?

(b) A forged steel bar , 50 mm in diameter; is subjected to a reverse bending stress of (6)
250N/mm2.The bar is made of steel of 40C8 (Sut=600N/mm2),calculate the life of the bar
for a reliability of 90%.
OR
Q.2 (a) Explain the following terms used in design of machine members subjected to variable (6)
loads:
i) Size factor ii) Notch Sensitivity iii) Endurance limit iv) Surface finish factor

(b) A non-rotating shaft supporting a load of (6)

2.5 kN is shown in Fig. 1. The shaft is
made of brittle material, with an ultimate
tensile strength of 300 N/mm2 and the
factor of safety is 3. Determine the
dimensions of the shaft.

UNIT II
Q.3 Explain complete design procedure of screw jack. (12)
OR
Q.4 The crane hook carries a load of 20 kN as shown in Fig. 2. The section at X-X is (12)
rectangular whose horizontal side is 100 mm. Find the stresses in the inner and outer
fibers at the given section.

UNIT III
Q.5 (a) Draw and describe Chordal action in chain drive. (6)

(b) The following data is given for an open-type V-belt drive: (6)
Diameter of driving pulley = 150 mm
Diameter of driven pulley = 300 mm
Centre distance = 1 m
Groove angle = 40o
Mass of belt = 0.25 kg/m
Maximum permissible tension = 750 N
Coefficient of friction = 0.2
Calculate the maximum power transmitted by the belt and the corresponding belt velocity.
Neglect power losses.
OR
Q.6 (a) Under what circumstances a fibre rope and a wire rope is used? What are the advantages (6)
of a wire rope over fibre rope?

(b) A pulley, made of grey cast iron FG 150, transmits 10 kW of power at 720 rpm. The (6)
diameter of the pulley is 500 mm. the pulley has four arms of elliptical cross section, in
which the major axis is twice the minor axis. Determine the dimensions of the cross-
section of the arm, if the factor of safety is 5.
UNIT IV
Q.7 (a) Discuss with neat sketches, the various types of worms and worm gears. (6)

(b) A pair of spur gears with 20o full depth involute teeth consists of a 20 teeth pinion meshing (6)
with a 41 teeth gear. The module is 3mm while the face width is 40 mm. the material for
the pinion as well as for the gear is steel with an ultimate tensile strength of 600 N/mm 2.
The gears are heat treated to a surface hardness of 400 BHN. The pinion rotates at 1450
rpm and the service factor for the application is 1.75. Assume that velocity factor accounts
for the dynamic load and the factor of safety is 1.5.
Determine the rated power that the gears that the gears can transmit.
OR
Q.8 (a) Discuss gear materials and their application. (6)

(b) A pair of parallel helical gears consists of a 20 teeth pinion meshing with a 100 teeth gear. (6)
The pinion rotates at 720 rpm. The normal pressure angle is 20 o, while the helix angle is
25o. The face width is 40 mm and the normal module is 4 mm. The pinion as well as the
gear is made of steel 40C8 (Sut = 600 N/mm2 ) and heat treated to a surface hardness of
300 BHN. The service factor and the factor of safety are 1.5 and 2 respectively. Assume
that the velocity factor accounts for the dynamic load and calculate the power transmitting
capacity of gears.
UNIT V
Q.9 (a) Write short note on classifications and different types of antifriction bearings. (6)

(b) Following data is given for a 360o hydrodynamic bearing: (6)

Length to diameter ration = 1
Journal speed = 1350 rpm
Journal diameter = 100 mm
Diametric clearance = 100 m
External load = 9kN
The value of minimum film thickness variable is 0.3. Find the viscosity of oil that need be
used.
OR
Q.10 (a) Explain how the following factors influence the life of a bearings: (6)

ii) load
iii) Speed
iv) Reliability

(b) A ball bearing, subjected to a radial load of 5 kN, is expected to have a life of 8000 hr at (6)
1450 rpm with a reliability of 90%. Calculate the dynamic load capacity of the bearing, so
that it can be selected from the manufacturers catalogue based on a reliability of 90%.
