1.0 INTRODUCTION

This Report describes in brief the Structural aspects and Design Philosophy including selected
construction aspects. The report also deals with considerations relating to seismic design of the
building in addition to the structural system of the building.
The structural design will be primarily based on the current Indian Codes of practice. While efforts have
been made to incorporate all the structural aspects of the project in this report, a revision of the same at
the later stages of the project cannot be ruled out which may be necessary due to some aspects not
foreseen now.
The “Krissh Greens”, European Estate, Sardhana Road Crossing, Bypass Road, NH-58,
Near Best Price Store, Meerut, UP – 250-001.” Project is being architecturally designed by M/s.
DIMENSIONS AND DESIGNS A28, SECOND FLOOR, SECTOR 36, NOIDA, UP, INDIA-301303. The
Commercial project consists of the following’s buildings:

A. Residential building

M/s. TPC Technical Projects Consultants Pvt. Ltd. have been appointed to conduct the structural
designs of “KRISSH GREENS”. Design Basis Report (DBR) is presented to describe in brief various
aspects of structural designs. The building is divided into the following sections:

2.0 SECTION-I, ( STRUCTURAL DESIGN PHILOSOPHY FOR

RESIDENTIAL BUILDING )

2.1 STRUCTURAL SCHEME

The design of the Proposed Residential Building at Meerut (U.P) will be based on the
Architectural drawings provided by the M/s. DIMENSIONS AND DESIGNS A28, SECOND FLOOR,
SECTOR 36, NOIDA, UP, INDIA-301303.

The building is 1 Basements , Stilt , 12 typical floors and Terrace. One basement is used for
parking. Stilt floor consists of Parking etc. From first floor level Living Room starts and they are up to
topmost level.

2.2 STRUCTURAL SYSTEM

Conventional frame structure:

RCC framed structure comprising of columns and beams as structural system is

proposed for the building.

There possible options:

i) Beam slab arrangement - With secondary beam and higher beam depths
this reduces slab thickness and provides maximum economy

3 DESIGN BASIS

5.1 General

The structure of the project is designed in accordance with the Indian Code IS:456-2000, with
latest amendments, which is considered mandatory for reinforced concrete structures in the country.
5.2 Grade of Concrete and Cover to the Reinforcement according to the provisions of the Indian
Code

The appropriate grade of concrete and nominal cover to reinforcement is governed by the following main
considerations:
i) Durability of Concrete
ii) Corrosion Protection of the Reinforcement
iii) Bar Size
iv) Nominal maximum aggregate size

From Durability requirement, exposure condition is assumed as mild for Structural

elements above ground level and moderate for Structural elements below ground level.

The Nominal cover to reinforcement to meet Durability requirement shall be as

follows : -

Mild - 20 mm

Moderate - 30 mm (Only for members in contact with earth)

The Nominal cover to all reinforcement shall be as follows: -

Columns - 40 mm or dia of longitudinal reinforcement whichever is greater

In the case of columns of minimum dimension of 200 mm or under, whose Reinforcing bars do not
exceed 12 mm a nominal cover of 25 mm may be used.

Footings - 50 mm (minimum)
The Indian Code IS: 456-2000, permits a minimum grade of concrete for reinforced concrete members
as M20 and the following concrete cover to the main reinforcement for “normal” conditions and fire rating
of 2 hrs for columns & foundations & 1.5 hrs for slabs & beams.

For any other elements not specified above, cover shall be as per the clause 26.4 of IS: 456-2000

5.3 Fire Resistance

For fire resistance of structure the building shall be designed as per Table 19, NBC code Part-4
Clause 2.6 and 3.4. As per this Type-1 construction type shall be conducted.
Page 5

KRISSH GREENS

As per the Table 1, NBC Code part-4, Interior bearing walls, bearing partitions, columns, girders,
trusses (other than roof truss) and framing are to be designed for 3 and 4 hours rating.
Hence column shall be designed for 4 hrs rating and beam slab are for 3 hrs rating for type 1
construction.
Minimum Component dimension are as per clause 21 of IS: 456:2000.
Minimum cover shall be as per Table 16A, IS 456

5.5 Reinforcement
High yield strength deformed bars with Fe = 500 N/mm2 confirming to IS: 1786 – 2008 with a
14.5% minimum elongation shall be used in the project. Saving in shell quantities can be achieved by
providing Fe 500 steel Reinforcement Bars of 10,12,16,20,25,28,32 mm shall be used. Only lapped
splices shall be used for bar dia up to 20 mm for columns and for all diameters in slabs & beams.
Mechanical couplers can be used for splicing of reinforcement of larger dia rebars in columns for
economy.

5.6 Structural system and Dimensioning

The building consists of 1 basements, stilt + 12 stories. In addition to the requirements governed
by loads and forces the minimum structural dimensions are also governed by other considerations like
size of aggregates, reinforcement detailing etc.

5.7 Load Combinations

All structural designs are carried out by Limit State method of design. For this purpose the
Load factor for various load combinations indicated in IS-875 (Part 5) – 1987 and SP24 -1983 are as
follows:
1) 1.5*DL + 1.5*LL
2) 1.5*DL ± 1.5 * EL / WL
3) 1.2*DL+1.2*LL± 1.2* EL / WL
4) 0.9*DL± 1.5 * EL / WL
5) 0.75(1.4 DL+1.4 TL+1.7LL)
6) 1.4 (DL+TL)
Whenever imposed load is combined with earthquake load, the appropriate part of imposed load
as specified in IS: 1893 – 2002 is used both for evaluating earthquake effect and for combined load effects
used in such combination. Live Load Reduction shall be done as per procedure give in Appendix A of IS
875 Part 2 for the design of columns and foundations.
In addition following load combinations are considered for calculating the forces at serviceability limit

Loads:

a) Dead Load (hereinafter referred as DL)

b) Dead load shall mean the total weight of structures and/or foundations, and all
materials permanently attached there to or supported thereby. The dead loads for the
RCC members are considered on the basis of the density of RCC as 25 KN/cum. The
density of AAC block wall is taken as 7.5 KN/cum.

The allowance for the floor finish is considered as 50 mm for typical floor apartments,
Lobbies, Ground Floor and Arrival Level and 75 mm for Upper basements. The toilets
and balconies are considered 50 mm sunk and light weight material is taken for filling.

Load of 0.5 KN/sqm shall be considered for False-ceiling and services in the toilets.
The Load taken for railing is 2kN/m and the load for Parapet is 5kN/m.

The average roof finish is considered to be 150 mm thick. The earth filling at
ground floor on non tower area for landscape is 600mm.

The unit weight of materials shall confirm to IS 875 – Part - I. The self weight
coefficient of structure to be taken as 0.9.

The self weight of structure is automatically calculated by the analysis software

depending upon the cross-sectional area and density of each member as follows.
