1. Introduction

The Semiconductor diodes were the first semiconductor electronic

devices. The most common function of a diode is to allow an electric
current to pass in one direction (called the diode's forward direction), while
blocking current in the opposite direction (the reverse direction). In this
assessment, the task will be divided into two parts. In Task1 you will carry
out practical investigation to verify the operation of diode in Dc and Ac
circuits using appropriate engineering software tool. In Task 2, students
are required to write the analysis and conclusion from the

2. Objectives

• To understand the characteristics of diode.

• To determine the biasing of the diode.
• To measured and verify the operation of diode in Dc and Ac
circuits.
• To simulation the operation of diode in Dc and Ac circuits using
engineering software tool.

3. Equipment / Tools

• Multisim / Proteus Software

4. Procedures

TASK 1: DIODE APPLICATION (CLO2& CLO3) [80 marks]

1. Based on the circuit in Figure 1, simulate the circuits and measured the
voltage at measurement point in Table 1 by using multimeter in Multisim
Software.

2. Simulate the circuit in Figure 2. By using oscilloscope, measured peak-
topeak input voltage, ( Vip-p ) and output voltage,( Vop-p ). Capture and
attach oscilloscope readings that show input signal and output signal
waveform. Clearly mark the peak-to-peak values of input and output
signals ( Vi(p-p) and
Vo(p-p) ) on the oscilloscope.

TASK 2: ANALYSIS & CONCLUSION [ 20 marks]

Student Name: ……………………………………… Student ID: …………..

Based on individual understanding, analyze and conclude your observations

and findings from the result obtained in Task 1.

1) Figure 1 and Figure 2

Figure 1(a) is a Half Wave Rectifier and the circuit in forward bias. Since the circuit in
forward bias, the voltage at (VRL1) is 3.36V because there some voltage drop for the active
diode that roughly 0.7V. Figure 1(b) is also a half wave rectifier but it is in reverse bias.
Since the circuit is in reverse bias there is no voltage pass through the diode( consider open
circuit) because the diod is in reverse bias. Figure 2 is negative series clipper circuit. This
circuit will clip off potions of signal voltage .
