HW #1
1. When sketching or demonstrating the spatial variation of a vector field, we often use arrows, wherein the
length of the arrow is made to be proportional to the strength of the field and the direction of the arrow is
the same as that of the field’s. Using this arrow representation, sketch each of the following vector fields
and evaluate its divergence and curl at the origin: (a) 𝐸⃗ 𝑥𝑎 𝑦𝑎 (b) 𝐸⃗ 𝑟𝑎𝜙

2. (a) For each of the following scalar field, obtain an analytical solution for ∇T and generate a
corresponding arrow representation.
0 𝑟 10
(i) T x y , for 10 x, y 10 (ii) T 15 rcos 𝜙, 𝑓𝑜𝑟
0 𝜙 2𝜋
(b) For each of the following vector fields, determine ∇ ∙ A⃑ analytically and then compare the result with
your expectations on the basis of the displayed pattern.
(i) A⃑ 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑥 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑦 𝑎 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑥 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑦 𝑎 , 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝜋 𝑥, 𝑦 𝜋

(ii) A⃑ sin 𝑎 sin 𝑎 , 𝑓𝑜𝑟 10 𝑥, 𝑦 10

(i) (ii)
3. The temperature in an auditorium is given by 𝑇 𝑥 𝑦 𝑧. A mosquito located at (1, 1, 2) in the
auditorium desires to fly in such a direction that it will get warm as soon as possible. In what direction must
it fly?

4. Let 𝑓 𝑥 𝑦 2𝑥𝑦 𝑧 . (a) Find the directional derivative of 𝑓 at point (2, 4, -3) in the direction of 𝑎
2𝑎 𝑎 . (b) Verify that the line integral of ∇𝑓 from (2, 4, -3) to (0, 0, 0) is path-independent.

5. Find an expression for the vector field 𝑬⃑ that satisfies these following properties:
(a) 𝑬⃑ point along 𝑎 ; (b) the magnitude of 𝑬⃑ is a function of only the distance from the origin;
(c) 𝑬⃑ vanishes at the origin, and (d) ∇ ∙ 𝑬⃑ 6, everywhere.

6. For the vector field 𝑬⃑ 10e 𝑎 3z𝑎 , verify the divergence theorem for the cylindrical region
enclosed by r = 2, z = 0 , and z = 4.

7. Verify Stokes’ theorem for the vector field 𝑩⃑ r𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜙𝑎 sin𝜙𝑎𝜙 by evaluating the following:
(a) ∮ B⃑ ∙ 𝑑l⃑ over the contour shown in below.
(b) ∇ B⃑ ∙ 𝑑𝑠⃑ over the surface of the contour as shown.
8. For (a) and (b), please find the value of the constant k for which the vector field can be realized as a
divergence-free field.

(a) A  (1 / y k )(2 xaˆ x  yaˆ y )

(b) B  r (sin kaˆr  cos kaˆ )

(c) Please determine if C  R sin aˆ is a solenoidal field, conservative field, or both.

(a) Is 𝐺⃗ irrotational (or conservative)? (b) Find the net flux of 𝐺⃗ over the cube 0 x, y, z 1.
(b) Determine the circulation of 𝐺⃗ around the edge of the square z 0, 0 x, y 1. Assume
anticlockwise direction.

10. There are three vectors in the Cartesian coordinate:

(ii) 𝑣⃑ 𝑥𝑦𝑎 2𝑦𝑧𝑎 3𝑥𝑧𝑎
(iii) 𝑣⃑ 𝑦 𝑎 2𝑥𝑦 𝑧 𝑎 2𝑦𝑧𝑎

the job.
(b) Which can be expressed as the curl of a vector? Find such a vector.
