Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Mathematics Grade 7 Self-Learning Module on Solving Problems

Involving Algebraic Expressions!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed

by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Officer-in-
Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin, in
partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor, Honorable Victor Ma.
Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using
the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in developing this instructional
resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body
of the self-learning module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this self-
learning module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing
them to manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and
assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the self-learning module.
For the Learner:

Welcome to the Mathematics Grade 7 Self-Learning Module on Solving Problems

Involving Algebraic Expressions!

RECAP

In the previous lessons you have learned and discovered the patterns on finding
the products.
Let us answer the questions below before we continue with the new lessons.
A. Find the products of the following.
1. ( x + 3 ) ( x2 – 3x + 9 ) =

2. (2x + y ) ( 4x2 – 2xy + y2 ) =

3. (4r2 - pq ) ( 16r4 + 4pqr2 + p2q2 ) =

LESSON

After you have learned the concept of algebraic expressions, let us proceed with
its application.
Remember that in solving word problems read carefully and understand what is
asked in the problem.
Examples:
1. The width of a rectangular garden is 2x – 7 feet and the length is 3x + 8 feet. Write
a polynomial that represents the perimeter.

Solution:
Step 1. Determine what is being asked for in the problem.

Write a polynomial that represents the perimeter.

Step 2. Write the given facts.
l = 3x + 8 feet P=?
w = 2x – 7 feet
Step 3. Solve for the perimeter.
a. To get the perimeter of rectangle use the pattern or formula P = 2( l + w) or
P = 2l + 2w.
b. Substitute the given using the formula:
P = 2( l + w)

P = 2 (3x + 8 + 2x – 7 ) Add similar terms.

P = 2 ( 5x + 1 ) Use Distributive Property.
P = 2(5x) + 2(1) Multiply each term.

P = 10x + 2 square feet

Step 4. Make a conclusion.
Perimeter of a rectangular garden is (10x + 2) ft2.
2. The Pasig City government budget is represented by 9x2 + 5x + 9. Represent the
amount of budget after 7x2 + 14x + 19 was used for the COVID-19 project.

Solution:
Step 1. Determine what is being asked for in the problem.
Represent the amount of budget after 7x2 + 14x + 19 was used for the
COVID-19 project.
Step 2. Write the given facts.
Total budget = 9x2 + 5x + 9
Amount Spent = 7x2 + 14x + 19
Step 3. Solve for the budget left.
9x2 + 5x + 9 9x2 + 5x + 9
- 7x2 + 14x + 19 + -7x2 - 14x - 19
2x2 - 9x - 10

Step 4. Make a conclusion. Remember:

The amount of budget left is 2x2 - 9x - 10. Change the sign of the
subtrahend then proceed in
3. Find the volume of the rectangular prism whose Addition.
length, width and height are (x + 3) meter, (x – 3)
meter and (2x + 5) meter respectively. (Hint: Volume of rectangular prism = l x w
x h).
Solution:
Step 1. Determine what is being asked for in the problem.
Find the volume of the rectangular prism.

Step 2. Write the given facts.

length = (x + 3) meter
width = (x – 3) meter
height = (2x + 5) meter

Step 3. Solve for the volume.

Volume of rectangular prism = l x w x h
V=lxwxh
= (x + 3)(x -3)(2x + 5) Multiply each terms.

= (x + 3)(x -3) (2x + 5)

= ( x2 - 3x + 3x – 9) (2x + 5) add -3x + 3x = 0x (remove)

= ( x2 – 9) (2x + 5) Multiply
= 2x3 + 5x2 - 18x - 45 cubic meters
Step 4. Make a conclusion.
The volume of the rectangular prism is 2x3 + 5x2 - 18x - 45 cubic
meters.

4. If I spent (x3 + 5x2 – 2x – 24) pesos for (x2 + x – 6) pencils, how much does each
pencil cost?
Solution:
Step 1. Determine what is being asked for in the problem.
How much does each pencil cost.

Step 2. Write the given facts / equations.

(x3 + 5x2 – 2x – 24)
(x2 + x – 6)

Step 3. Solve for the cost of each pencil.

a. Divide the first term of the dividend by the first term of the divisor.
𝑥3
= 𝑥 3−2
𝑥2
=x
x
x2 + x – 6 x3 + 5x2 – 2x – 24

b. Multiply the divisor by the quotient and subtract their product from
the dividend.
c.
x(x2 + x – 6) = x3 + x2 – 6x

x
x2 + x – 6 x3 + 5x2 – 2x – 24
-x3 + x2 – 6x Subtract.(change the sign of
0x3 + 4x2 + 4x -24 the subtrahend)

d. Repeat steps a and b until the last partial dividend is divided by the
divisor.
X+4
x2 + x – 6 x3 + 5x2 – 2x – 24
-x3 + x2 – 6x
0x3 + 4x2 + 4x - 24
+ 4x2 + 4x - 24 Subtract.(change the sign of
0x2 + 0x – 0 of the subtrahend)

Step 4. Make a conclusion.

Each pencil costs X + 4 pesos.
