Topic Covered: Sampling Theory, Types of Sampling, Simple Random Sam-

pling, SRSWR, SRSWOR, Sampling Error, Central limit theorem, Point es-
timation, MLE, and Interval estimation.

1. A population consist of five numbers 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14. If all samples of size 2 are
drawn from this population with replacement

(a) the total number of samples with replacement.

(b) The mean of the population.
(c) The standard deviation (SD) of the population.
(d) The mean of the sampling distribution of means.
(e) Standard error of means.

2. A finite population consists of five numbers 3, 6, 9.15, 27

(a) list all possible samples of size 3 without replacement.

(b) Find the standard deviation of the sampling distribution of means.

3. A sample size of 400 is taken from a population where the standard deviation is 16.
Find the values of standard error.

4. A random sample of size 100 is taken from a population whose mean is 60 and
variance is 400. Using CLT, with what probability can we assent that the mean of
the sample will not differ from µ = 60 by more than 4?

5. A manager wants an estimate of the average sales of a salesman in his company. A

random sample of 121 out of 600 salesmen is selected without replacement and the
average is found to be Rs. 760. If the population standard deviation is Rs. 150,
the manager specifies a 99% level of confidence. What is the interval estimate for
the population mean µ.

6. A sample of 5 individuals had the following heights in centimeters: 6.33, 6.37, 6.36, 6.32,
and 6.37. Find out the unbiased and efficient estimates of (i) true mean (ii) the
variance (iii) find 95% confidence interval for the true mean.

7. Let x1 = 0.7, x2 = 1.5, x3 = 0.3, x4 = 0.5, x5 = 3.4 be a sample of size 5 from a

distribution having pdf

f (x, θ) = θe−θx θ > 0, x > 0.

Find the MLE of θ.

1
8. Obtain the MLE of θ for the following distribution
1
f (x, θ) = 0 < x < θ, θ > 0.
θ
If the sample values are 1.3, 0.6, 1.7, 2.2, 0.3, and 1.1, find a numerical value of θ̂.

9. In a population of 1000 individuals, a researcher wants to select a sample of 50

individuals using Simple Random Sampling with Replacement (SRSWR). What is
the probability that the same individual is selected twice in a row for the first two
selections?

10. A survey is conducted in a city with a population of 10, 000 households. The re-
searcher wants to select a sample of 500 households using Simple Random Sampling
without Replacement (SRSWOR). What is the probability that the first household
selected is also the tenth household selected?

11. A university conducts a survey to estimate the average number of hours students
spend studying per week. They selected a random sample of 200 students from a
population of 10,000 students and found that the average number of hours studied
in the sample was 15 hours with a standard deviation of 3 hours. What is the
sampling error for this estimate?

12. Let X̄ be the mean of a random sample of n = 25 currents (in milliamperes) in

a strip of wire in which each measurement has a mean of 15 and a variance of 4.
Then X̄ has an approximate N (15, 4/25) distribution. Find P (14.4 < X̄ < 15.6).

13. Let X1 , X2 , ...Xn be poison variate with parameter λ. Use CLT to estimate P (120 ≤
Sn ≤ 160) where Sn = X1 + X2 + ...Xn , λ = 2 and n = 75.

14. An unknown distribution has a mean of 90 and a standard deviation of 15. Samples
of size n = 25 are drawn randomly from the population. Find the probability that
the sample mean is between 85 and 92.

15. Find the Maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) for the parameter λ of a Poisson
distribution on the basis of a sample of size n. Also, find its variance.

16. In a sample from a binomial population with parameter p, and the success numbers
are X in n trail. Find the MLE of p.
