Dear All
Today we all have gathered here for a very specific cause and that is to learn art of
natural birthing. Vaginal deliveries have always been the choice in the past and even
today. Things are changing and there is a trend to move towards operations as
caesarean section. This increasing trend is due to both - the health seekers and
providers. The demand caesarean section and Muhurt caesarean section is a
common entity and doctors are supporting them.
Recovery after vaginal birth is usually shorter and less painful than after a caesarean
section, and allows the woman to spend more time with her baby. New research is
discovering ways that labour and vaginal birth are good for babies, too. Babies that
are born vaginally also have lower rates of some serious childhood diseases like
asthma, child-onset diabetes and allergies and are less likely to become obese.
There is rising trend in caesarean section rates all over the world and women are
requesting caesarean section without any medical indication. It was found that
clinicians agree that the caesarean section rates are increasing and most of them
hold the media and women responsible for this rising trend. However, in situations
where no definite medical indication was evident, most of the
clinicians favoured caesarean section. There is a need for change in the attitude of
clinicians before attempting to educate women regarding the caesarean section for
non-medical reasons.
To promote the natural physiological birth the cadre of MIDWIFERY has been
introduced since time immemorial globally, initially less skilled but now skilled and
well trained midwives who take care of low risk labour cases. India has had Nursing
cadre who took care of labour room too but lately Government of India realized the
significance of this cadre and has now made it a priority for improving maternal
health. So the Midwives who were the missing piece in the maternal healthcare
puzzle have become a priority now.
Midwives are health care professional who provides an array of health care services
for women including gynaecological examinations, contraceptive counselling,
prescriptions, labour and delivery care, Providing expert care during labour and
delivery, and after birth is a specialty that makes them unique.
Midwives play a pivotal role during labour and delivery. They provide emotional
support, pain management techniques and guidance during this intense and
transformative process. While midwives are skilled in managing uncomplicated
births, they are trained to recognize and respond to possible complications.
Midwives advocate for a patient-centered approach, ensuring the birthing experience
aligns with the birthing parent's preferences and values, but they are also well-
prepared to safely handle emergencies and collaborate with obstetricians when
necessary.
With task-shifting of normal pregnancy and childbirth care to midwives, the workload
on doctors/obstetricians declines significantly. Moreover, it makes the provision of
maternal care more cost-efficient by avoiding unnecessary medical interventions,
particularly caesarean sections.
"In a world where every two minutes a woman or girl dies during pregnancy,
childbirth or its aftermath as our latest data attest the midwife is always the hero of
the story," UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem has said. "Think of a
midwife: what comes to mind? Excellent teamwork, competence, good judgment and
caring. Hallmarks of the profession - traits that underpin the best of humanity, that
will surely help create the peace we seek."
This event, part of our 2024 International Day of the Midwife celebrations, will offer a
unique opportunity to explore how midwives, as the
frontline workforce, are not only first responders, but also integral
