Terms of Use
Neither Epson nor its affiliates will assume any responsibility for any damages that result from a
firmware upgrade. Your use of this document and the related tasks (firmware download, then
firmware installation) is at your own risk.
When performing the firmware upgrade, follow the ‘Firmware Upgrade Instructions’ precisely. The
upgrade instructions are provided in this document. Please pay particular attention to the
information provided in the ‘Important Notes’ section. Failure to do so may cause the Epson R-D1
to stop working.
Please understand that if the firmware upgrade fails for any reason (damaged firmware files,
removal of battery, empty battery, etc.) you may need to repair the Epson R-D1. Any costs
associated with these repairs will be the personal responsibility of the user. In case of a failed
firmware upgrade and/or a non-operating Epson R-D1 please call the regular Epson hotline.

Content of this document

This document is a guide for the Epson R-D1 firmware upgrade that will give you all the functionality of the
new Epson R-D1s.

• Pictures displayed on the LCD can be viewed at a greater magnification rate: Jpeg from x10 to x16
and RAW from x2 to x16.
• The Epson R-D1 ‘default film’ can be set to 1, 2 or 3. Value 1 is ‘Portrait’ mode. Value 2 is for
‘Landscape’ shooting and value 3 is a ‘night-view’ set-up. Please note, your original film set-up
values will be kept after the firmware upgrade. The new default values will only be set after you
perform the photography setting initialization.
• When shooting in Jpeg mode you can now select the colour space ‘Adobe RGB’.
• The new “RAW + JPEG” shooting mode simultaneously records the shot in two different files (Jpeg
(H) and RAW) under the same file number.
• The “quick view” function allows the picture to be displayed on the LCD immediately after the shot
is taken.
• The noise reduction for long exposure times reduces noise, after the shutter has been closed. On
the Epson R-D1, the strong noise reduction set-up of the film could be only operated for an
exposure time above 2 seconds.
• A new ‘CCD pixel defect correction’ function can be performed from the user menu.
• Compatibility with Print Image Matching 3.
• The shutter remains usable even if the Epson R-D1 is set to playback mode.
• The auto white balance has been modified. The colour balance adjustment for incandescent light
has been improved.
• Reduction of noise for shots with the ISO 1600 set-up.
• The ‘multi-shot’ function has been improved by increased the number of successive shots from 2 to
3.

Please read this firmware upgrade guide carefully and follow strictly the instructions of this guide to
upgrade your firmware.

Important notes
• Do not alter the firmware files ss_3_010002.ram and R_D1_010214_E.BIN
• Use a fully charged battery for the firmware upgrade.
• During the firmware upgrade, do not turn the power off and do not remove the SD card!
• Due to the new functions added by the upgrade, the number of shot capacity is decreased, by about
10%.

Firmware upgrade instructions

Step 1. Prepare the items you need for the upgrade

Before performing the upgrade, prepare the following items:

• The Epson R-D1 camera.

• A fully charged Epson R-D1 lithium ion battery pack.
• A SD memory card with a minimum of 16 MB free space. Please note: We recommend that you use
an empty memory card as any data stored in the memory card might be eliminated when the memory
card is formatted!
• A Windows or Macintosh computer that can be connected to the Internet.
• A Windows or Macintosh computer fitted with a SD memory card reader.
Please note: Should the computer not be fitted with a SD card reader, prepare a SD card adapter or
an external SD card reader and a Windows or Macintosh computer that can handle SD card readers.

Step 2. Download the firmware

When you are at the Epson R-D1 Firmware Upgrade web page, you need to click on “Register and
download now”. Then you need to fill out the online registration form and accept the Terms of Use. Once
the details have been entered and you ticked the box “I have read and accept to the usage terms” the
download to your Windows or Macintosh computer will automatically begin. The downloaded file will be a
compressed or zipped archive file.

Step 3. Uncompress the downloaded file

You need to extract the content of the archive file. The procedure to extract a compressed or zipped
archive file varies according to your operating system. After the extraction you should see following files or
folders:
• The Terms of Use document file
• The files “ss_3_010002.ram” and “R_D1_010214_E.BIN”

Step 4. Format the SD memory card

1. Insert the SD memory card in the Epson R-D1. (See the Epson R-D1 user manual for more details on
how to insert a SD memory card.)
2. Format the SD memory card. (See the Epson R-D1 user manual for more details on how to format
the SD memory card.)

3. When the formatting is completed, extract the card out of the Epson R-D1.

Please note:
・ You need a SD memory card with at least 16 MB of free space.
・ The formatting process will erase all data you currently have on the SD memory card. Therefore
make sure the SD memory card does not contain any important data before performing the
formatting.

Step 5. Copy the data on the SD memory card

1. Insert the SD memory card in the computer or in the card reader and have the computer recognize
the SD memory card. (See the computer or SD card reader user manual for more details).
2. Copy the extracted files “ss_3_010002.ram” and “R_D1_010214_E.BIN” on the SD memory card.
Make sure you copy the two single files and not the folder “RD1Update_E”.

Please note:
・ Please make sure you copy the two single files “ss_3_010002.ram” and “R_D1_010214_E.BIN”
and not the folder “RD1Update_E”.
・ Make sure you copy the files on the top level of the SD memory card (root directory). If the files are
copied in an existing folder of the SD memory card, the firmware upgrade won’t be carried-out
properly.

3. Don’t remove the SD memory card from the computer or the SD card reader if the copy is still in
progress. (Check your computer or SD card reader manual for more details on how to remove the
SD memory card) .

Step 6. Insert the SD memory card in the Epson R-D1

1. Insert a fully charged battery in the Epson R-D1. (See the Epson R-D1 manual on how to insert the
battery).

Please note:
・ Make sure that the battery is fully charged.

2. Insert the SD memory card containing the files “ss_3_010002.ram” and “R_D1_010214_E.BIN” in
the SD memory card slot of the Epson R-D1 (See the Epson R-D1 manual for more information on
how to insert the SD memory card).

Step 7. Perform the firmware upgrade

1. Turn ON the Epson R-D1 power switch while pressing simultaneously the MENU button and
the USER button .

Please note:
・ Do not remove under any circumstance the SD memory card, nor turn off the power switch during
the firmware upgrade! This would cause an upgrade failure.

If the upgrade is unsuccessful

• If the upgrade is cancelled, you will see following screen.

You need to proceed again with the firmware upgrade. Turn off the Epson R-D1 with the power
switch and repeat the firmware upgrade process by starting from step 4 (Format the SD memory
card).

• If the battery is low, the firmware upgrade cannot be executed and the following screen is
displayed.

Turn the camera off with the power switch, reload the battery and repeat the firmware upgrade
process by starting from step 6.

• If other errors occur during the firmware upgrade, following screen is displayed.

Please check with the help of the following table the meaning and solution corresponding to your
error number.
