MYCOPLASMA PNEUMONIAE IgM

Mycoplasma pneumoniae IgM.....REACTIVE
METHODOLOGY: RAPID ENZYME IMMUNOASSAY (EIA)
REFERENCE RANGE:
REACTIVE TEST RESULT: A REACTIVE TEST RESULT INDICATES THE PRESENCE OF
IgM TO Mycoplasma pneumoniae.
NON REACTIVE TEST RESULT: A NON REACTIVE RESULT INDICATES THE ABSENCE
OF IgM TO Mycoplasma pneumoniae.
Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a member of a group of degenerate bacteria
lacking a cell wall. M. pneumoniae was the first human pathogen identified
in the gruop and causes up tp 20% of all cases of pnuemonia. Mycoplasmal
pneumonia presents with flu-like symptoms, however unlike most viral and
bacterial pneumonias, mycoplasmal pneumonia is more gradual in both
presentation and recovery. Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections are usually
grouped in the category of atypical pneumonia.
Test results should be used in conjuction with information available
from the patient clinical evaluation and other available diagnostic
procedures. Specific IgM Ab to M.pneumoniae are usually detected in
patients with a recent primary infection. They may be found in patients with
reactivated or secondary infections and are sometimes found in patients with
no other detectable evidence of recent infection. In addition, IgM to
Mycoplasma pneumoniae has been shown to persist for extended periods
(2 - 12 months) in some patients.
Results from immuno-suppressed individuals should be interpreted with
caution.
Note: Physicians need to avoid patient treatment based solely on any single
test result, and should interpret all results in the context of other
clinical and laboratory features.
