Task 4 – Suprasegmentals

WORKSHOP 2_ COLLABORATIVE EXERCISES

1. Answer the following questions and use APA citation and

references to reinforce your ideas:

 What is a phoneme?
A phoneme is the smallest unit of sound in a language that can
distinguish meaning. It is the mental representation of a sound
that native speakers recognize as distinct from other sounds in
the same language (Roach, 2009).

 What is rhythm in English language pronunciation?

Rhythm in English pronunciation refers to the pattern of
stressed and unstressed syllables in words and phrases. English
is a stress-timed language, meaning that stressed syllables
tend to occur at regular intervals (Ladefoged & Johnson, 2014).

 What is intonation in English language pronunciation?

Intonation in English pronunciation refers to the pattern of
voice pitch used in utterances, which allows the speaker to
convey attitudes and emotions (Roach, 2009). Intonation can
also change the meaning of a sentence, as in questions versus
statements.

 What is stress in English language pronunciation?

Stress in English pronunciation refers to the prominence of a
syllable or word in a sentence, achieved through an increase in
force of articulation, pitch, and/or duration (Ladefoged &
Johnson, 2014). In English, stress typically falls on the tonic
syllables of content words.

 What is the difference between syllable stress and word stress

in sentences?
Syllable stress refers to the prominence of a syllable within a
word, while word stress refers to the prominence of a word
within a sentence. In English, syllable stress is fixed in most
words, but word stress can vary depending on the sentence
structure and information focus (Roach, 2009).
