Total Mark: 10 Total Time: 7 days

Course Outcome (CO)

After completion of this course, the students will be able to
CO 3 Analyze the spectral data of spectroscopic techniques like UV-Visible, IR and, NMR.

CO 4 Choose modern engineering materials that meet certain mechanical, electrical, and
stereochemical requirements in various fields.
CO 5 Apply the knowledge of water analysis and treatment methods to improve water quality
from various sources.

1. Describe how IR spectroscopy is used for i) determination of functional

groups ii) determination of force constant iii) detection of impurities iv) CO 3 2
distinguishing intra and inter molecular hydrogen bond v) finding the ratio
of force constants of HF to that of HCl. Given that observed vibrational
wave number of HF is 3958 cm–1 and HCl is 2886 cm–1. Masses of H, F,
and Cl are 1u, 19 u, and 35 u respectively.
What is optical isomerism and give the condition for optical activity?
