Chapter 1. Introduction

This chapter explains what the Data Distributor is for, and describes its hardware.

General

The Data Distributor is a 19” rack-mountable box capable of providing full electrical
and optical isolation between 15 sensors (RS232 or RS422) and the RTNU, as well
as providing one auxiliary RS232 output.
Header Outputs from RTNU ILC Ports 2 and 3 can also be sent through the Data
Distributor with the transmit signal being optionally routed to the Auxiliary Outputs
receive pin.

Warning!
Lethal Voltages are contained within the enclose and on the PCB in the vicinity
of the power supply.

Caution
Take anit-static precautions if handling PCB ICs.

Hardware description

The Data Distributor is a 19” rack-mountable unit which has all external data
connectors accessible from the rear of the unit.
It incorporates five interface cards (3U cards), each with a card front, handles,
screws and fixings. Each 3U card can handle all interfaces associated with one
RTNU ICC card. Each card front has three Sensor Channels each with a ‘data in’
and ‘data out’ selection switch for selecting which set of data the Aux Interface
monitors. Setting the switch to the “IN” position allows the Aux connector to monitor
data from the sensor connector, (i.e. data IN to the RTNU).
Data activity LEDs indicating Transmit (TX) and Receive (RX) to and from the RTNU
are situated directly above the data switch for each channel, giving a hardware
indication of interface status. Software status is indicated by the relevant LED on the
RTNU ICC front panel.

Chapter 1. Introduction

Each channel can be configured for RS232 or RS422 sensors by removing the
appropriate 3U card from the chassis, setting the switch on the card to the
appropriate position and replacing the card in the chassis. All system and auxiliary
outputs are to RS232 standard, enabling easier interfacing and diagnostics. This
means that all ICC Termination Board hybrid ICs will be FH002 - RS232.
Existing Sensor cables to the RTNU ICC panels will fit directly into the Sensor port of
the Data Distributor.
All rear panel serial data connectors are 9-way D-type, female. See “Schematic - one
channel” in Chapter for a schematic diagram of a single channel. “Connector pin
allocation” in Chapter shows connector pin allocation.

Channel data The following signals are available for each channel:
• If RS232 Sensor:
RX, TX, RTS, CTS signals opto-isolated.
GND is electrically isolated.
• If RS422 Sensor:
RXD+, RXD-, TXD+, RXD- signals.
• 2 Auxiliary Outputs:
RX/TX (Pin2) & GND (Pin5) ONLY connected.
• LED indication with the following referenced to ICC:
Green - transmit data from ICC.
Amber - receive data from sensor.
Maximum guaranteed baud rate is 38400.

detail

The following are available on the unit’s front panel:

• 5 cards with 3 Channels each
• 2 Data Activity LEDs for each Channel
• Power Indication LED.
The plug-in cards handle all the signal interfacing and display signal information.
These cards are interchangeable and slot into the rack via the front panel.

Chapter 1. Introduction

Internal Details

The 9-way, D-type sockets and the 50-way, D-type socket on the Data Distributor
rear panel associated with the ICC card outputs from one RTNU interface are fixed
onto a PCB mounted on the interior of the unit’s rear panel.

Internal Backplane As shown in the above diagram the unit contains an internal backplane which
provides an interface between the connectors at the rear of the unit and the cards at
the front.

PCBs The five PCBs on the rear panel route the input signals to a 50-way PCB transition
connector which allows easy connection via ribbon cable to a backplane PCB which
connects to the five front panel 3U cards.

PSU A Universal Power Supply module (YAS100E) is mounted on the Backplane PCB.
The supply is fused through an external bayonet fuse on the rear panel with an IEC
connector as a power-in socket.

Chapter 1. Introduction

• 85-264V AC Universal input

• 5 Volt Output
• 47-440 Hz Input frequency
• -10°C to +70°C
• Approved to UL1950, IEC950 and EN60950.

Rear panel

The Data Distributor Unit has the capability to handle 15 RTNU Interfaces. To
accommodate the maximum 30 RTNU Interfaces, two Data Distributor Units would
be required.
To identify individual sockets on the rear panel, a set of labels is provided. Simply
attach the appropriate label to the rear panel to identify the connector data source.

Chapter 2. Installation

This chapter explains how to install the Data Distributor.

Installation details

One Data Distributor provides isolation for 15 channels of data. If the number of
sensors used plus the number of headers is greater than 15, then extra channels will
have to be connected as before.
Carry out the following procedure - ideally at a port call or while waiting on weather,
where time can be allocated to testing all sensors and headers prior to resuming
production:
1. Install the Data Distributor on the 19” rack, adjacent to the RTNU at a reasonably
accessible height.
2. Label sensor cables with destination ICC and port, then disconnect them from
the rear panel of the ICC cards.
3. Label ILC cables, then disconnect ILC ports 2 and 3 from the ILC rear panel.
4. Ensure that all relevant ICC termination boards are configured for RS232
operation, i.e. IC sockets for IC3, IC4 and IC5 are populated with FH002 hybrids.
If you have to change out any hybrid ICs, first remove power from the RTNU.
5. Connect all relevant SPECTRA ICC and ILC ports to the Data Distributor
“SPECTRA” ports using the supplied cables labelled “RTNU / Data Distributor”.
Ensure that the end marked “RTNU” is connected to RTNU ICC port.
6. Connect ILC header outputs, ports 2 and 3 (if required) to the relevant Data
Distributor port. In order to route the ILC transmit signal to the AUX port receive,
set the slide switch on the 3U card front for that channel to the “OUT” position.
7. Connect sensor cables to the relevant Data Distributor “Sensor” port. If RS422,
set the PCB switch for that channel to “RS422” position.
8. Apply power to the Data Distributor. The power supply is Universal input type
and will work with both 110V and 220V AC. Verify that the power LEDs – red on
the switch and green on the front panel - are both lit.
9. Test all sensor inputs and outputs, and header outputs, for data. Look for sensor
LED activity on the Data Distributor front panel, and the relevant ICC front panel
LED. In addition, check that data arrives uncorrupted at the destination – use
the RTCN View I/O facility to verify this. Where triggering of the sensor is carried
out from ICC, verify this also.
10. Form all RTNU / Data Distributor cables in a cable loom using tie wraps.
