Abstract

This Research is entitled “Relationship of Time spent on TikTok

and Productivity of Grade 11 General Academic Strand Students” By

Jan Oliver D. Lugmay, Adelaid G. Calasang, Riza Joy B. Balane,

Chary Mae M. Sawinhay, Douzen G. Calasang, Mariel Gwen S.

Sumonda of Bukidnon National High School.

This study investigates the impact of TikTok usage on the productivity

of Grade 11 General Academic Strand (GAS) students at Bukidnon

National High School during the 2023-2024 academic year. With

TikTok's rising popularity among teenagers and growing concerns

about its addictive nature, this research aims to fill a gap in

understanding how TikTok usage affects academic performance.

Utilizing a correlational research design, data was collected through a

self-administered survey questionnaire distributed to 173 randomly

selected participants. The questionnaire assessed participants'

average daily TikTok usage and their perceived productivity levels.

Findings reveal that the majority of Grade 11 GAS students spend

moderate amounts of time on TikTok, with less than 7.5 hours per

day. However, excessive TikTok usage is associated with lower

productivity levels, as indicated by self-reported behaviors such as

tardiness, incomplete assignments, and reduced attention in class.

The study underscores the importance of promoting responsible social

media use among students to mitigate its negative impact on

academic performance. Insights gained from this research contribute

PAGE 1

to ongoing discussions about the role of social media in education and

inform strategies for enhancing students' time management skills and

academic focus.

Chapter 1

The Problem

Background of the Study

TikTok has become popular app for people of many different

ages to use especially teenagers. TikTok is causing various issues,

including addiction in teenagers the addiction is likely to affect the

student’s time management abilities, leading to reduced focus on

academics. The over use of this TikTok app often leads to addiction

and time wastage which has big impact on students academic

performance (Wojdan et al.,2021).

Students in Grade 11 General Academic Strand are at a crucial

point in their academic careers when they are preparing for their

senior high school year and upcoming college courses. In order to help

students it is crucial to understand how using TikTok affects their

productivity that will not threaten their academic success .

There is still no research on the precise impact of TikTok usage

on the productivity of grade 11 General Academic Strand students,

despite the growing worry regarding the detrimental impacts of social

media usage on academic performance and productivity. By

examining the connection between TikTok time and production among

grade 11 General Academic Strand students, this study seeks to close

this gap.
PAGE 1

In conclusion, the growing popularity of TikTok among

teenagers raises concerns about its impact on academic productivity.

Therefore, this study aims to investigate the relationship between time

spent on TikTok and academic productivity among Grade 11 General

Academic Strand students. The findings of this study will inform

programs aimed at promoting responsible social media use while

ensuring that academic performance is not negatively affected.

Strand students in terms of the average time spent on TikTok?

Significance of the Study

This study will be undertaken to find out how spending too

much time on TikTok affects the productivity of Grade – 11 General

Academic Strand Students. The researcher believes that the following

individuals will be benefited from the study:

Students will benefit from this study since it will make them

aware of how spending the majority of their time on TikTok affects

their productivity and performance as students. Teachers will be

benefited from this study because they are the ones who lead the

students in their studies. It is crucial for teachers to be aware that

one of the most prevalent reasons why students perform poorly in

school is because they spend more time on TikTok than on their

academic assignments. This research will be used to develop

techniques to help their students manage their time more

successfully, allowing them to focus more on their academic work.

This study will also be helpful in directing future research in

this area by shedding light on the precise impact of TikTok usage on

Republic Act No. 10844, an act creating the Department of

Information and Communications Technology, Defining its power and

functions appropriating funds therefor, and for other purposes.

House Bill No. 6776, or the SMART Act, aims to address social

media addiction by enhancing our understanding of its effects. It

authorizes the Department of Health, in coordination with the

Department of Education and the Department of Information and

Communications Technology, to take the lead in developing strategies

and initiatives to reduce social media addiction. The bill recognizes the

importance of educating students, raising public awareness, and

fostering responsible digital behavior.

Theories and Concepts

The Self-determination Theory (Vasper, 2023) suggested a

possible connection between addictive TikTok use. This theory

explored the psychological needs of autonomy, competence, and

relatedness and how they may be impacted by excessive social media

usage, including TikTok addiction. The Uses and Gratification Theory

(Vinney, 2022) asserts that individuals use media, including social

media platforms like TikTok, to fulfill specific wants and needs. It

recognizes users as active agents who have control over their media

consumption. This theory helped explained why people engage with

TikTok and derive gratification from it.

PAGE 1

The Theory of Educational Productivity (Walberg, 1981) is an

empirically tested theory that analyzes the factors contributing to poor

students’ performance and productivity. While not directly related to

social media addiction, this theory provides insights into the

educational context and the challenges faced by students.

Studies conducted by Orgi et al. (2022) on science education

students have shown that excessive social media usage has a negative

impact on academic performance. Chukwu et al. (2022) examined the

influence of social media on time management among social science

education students in Nigerian tertiary institutions and found that

excessive usage hinders effective time allocation. Vasper (2023)

proposed the Self-Determination Theory, which suggests that

excessive social media usage can compromise autonomy and

relatedness, leading to negative outcomes. Strickland (2023)

conducted research on TikTok’s impact on Generation Z’s

productivity, revealing that excessive usage interferes with attention

span, focus, and overall productivity.

In conclusion, these studies by Orgi et al., Chukwu et al.,

Vasper, and Strickland contribute to the existing literature on social

media addiction and its consequences. They emphasize the adverse

effects of excessive social media usage on academic performance, time

management, psychological well-being, and productivity.

Understanding these findings is essential for developing interventions

PAGE 1

and strategies to address social media addiction and promote

healthier digital habits.

Studies Conducted

Several studies have been conducted to understand the impact

of social media addiction on individuals. The Theory of Educational

Productivity by Walberg (1981) provides a framework for

understanding factors that contribute to effective learning outcomes.

The Uses and Gratification Theory (Vinney, 2022) explores how

individuals fulfill their needs and desires through media consumption,

including social media. Specifically, studies have focused on TikTok

addiction and its impact on youth in Pakistan (Sabir et al., 2020).

Findings reveal the addictive nature of TikTok and its potential

consequences on mental health and well-being. Additionally, studies

have investigated the influence of social media usage on academic

performance among science education students (Orgi et al.,2022).

Excessive social media usage has been found to negatively impact

academic outcomes.

The influence of social media on time management has also

been explored among social science education students in Nigerian

tertiary institutions (Chukwu et al., 2022). Excessive social media

usage can hinder effective time management, affecting students’

ability to allocate time appropriately. The Self-Determination Theory

(Vasper, 2023) sheds light on the psychological needs that may be

impacted by excessive social media usage. Autonomy and relatedness

PAGE 1

can be compromised, potentially leading to negative outcomes.

Furthermore, TikTok’s impact on Generation Z’s productivity has been

studied (Strickland, 2023). Excessive TikTok usage can interfere with

attention span, focus, and overall productivity.

In conclusion, these studies collectively contribute to the

growing literature on social media addiction and its impact on

individuals. They highlight the negative effects of excessive social

media usage on academic performance, time management,

psychological well-being, and productivity. Understanding these

issues is crucial for developing interventions and strategies to address

social media addiction and promote healthier digital habits.

Insights

The review of literature and studies in this chapter provides

valuable insights into the impact of social media usage, specifically

TikTok, on the academic performance of Grade 11 General Academic

Strand students. The Self-determination Theory (Vasper, 2023) and

the Uses and Gratification Theory (Vinney, 2022) shed light on the

psychological aspects of addiction and media consumption. The

Theory of Educational Productivity (Walberg, 1981) offers insights into

the challenges faced by students in the educational context. Studies

by Sabir et al. (2020) and Chukwu et al. (2022) highlight the negative

consequences of TikTok addiction on mental health, academic

performance, and time management. Strickland (2023) explored

TikTok’s impact on Generation Z’s productivity. These insights

PAGE 1

emphasize the importance of interventions and strategies to address

social media addiction and promote healthier digital habits among

students, as informed by the mentioned studies.

Chapter 3

Methodology

This chapter discusses the methods and procedures used by the

researchers on how the study will be conducted. It contains the

research design, research locale, research respondents/participants of

the study, data collection method, validation of instruments, research

ethics, data gathering procedure and data analysis/Treatment of

Data.
PAGE 1

Research Design

This research will use Correlational research design.

Correlational research design investigates relationships between

variables without the researcher controlling or manipulating any of

them (Bhandari, 2021). This design is appropriate for this study

because it aims to investigate the relationship between the time spent

on TikTok and the productivity of Grade 11 General Academic Strand

students. The study will use a quantitative approach to collect data

from the participants.

Research Locale

This study will be conducted at the Bukidnon National High

School located at Barangay 3, Fortich Street Malaybalay City wherein

numerous Tiktok users are present. The researchers chose Bukidnon

Senior High School as the research locale since we have seen a large

number of students that uses Tiktok application.

Figure 2
PAGE 1

The Map of Bukidnon National High School

Research Participants of the Study

The participants of the study will be the Grade 11 General

Academic Strand Students in Bukidnon National High School. This

study will involve 201 participants where Slovin’s formula is used. The

participants will be informed about the nature and purpose of the

study and their consent will be obtained before they participate in the

research.

Sampling Procedure

The data collection method that will be used in this study is a

self-administered survey questionnaire. The study will use simple

random sampling to select a representative sample of students from

the population.
PAGE 1

Validation of Instruments

We utilized a research survey questionnaire to assess the

productivity levels of Grade 11 General Academic Strand students.

The questionnaire was adapted from a validated instrument previously

developed and used by Duval County Public School. The original

questionnaire, which focused on measuring productivity in an

educational context, served as a valuable reference for our study.

The adapted questionnaire consists of Likert-scale items that

capture students’ perceptions of their own productivity levels. The

Likert scale ranges from 4 (always) to 1(hardly ever), allowing students

to indicate their perceived frequency of being productive.

Research Ethics

In order to conduct our study, the researchers will follow ethical

guidelines for research involving human subject. Letters of consent

will be obtained from the respondents before they participate in the

study. The participants will also be informed that they have the right

to withdraw from the study at any time. Confidentiality of the

respondents will be maintained throughout the study by ensuring that

the information gathered from the participants will be kept strictly

confidential and will be used for research purposes only. The study

will also ensure that the respondents are not put at risk of harm and

discomfort.

Data Gathering Procedure

PAGE 1

First, the researcher will develop a survey or questionnaire that

assesses the amount of time students spend on TikTok and their

productivity through their grades. The researcher will make sure that

the questions are clear, concise, and easy to understand. Second, the

researcher will obtain permission from school authorities to conduct

the survey and will determine the appropriate sample size and select a

random sample of Grade 11 General Academic Strand Students.

Third, the researcher will distribute the survey or questionnaire to the

selected students and will provide clear instructions on how to

complete the survey and emphasize the importance of honest and

accurate responses. Fourth, the researcher will collect the completed

survey questionnaires and check for completeness and accuracy.

Lastly, the researcher will conduct a correlation analysis to determine

if there is a relationship between time spent on TikTok and

productivity levels.

Data Analysis/ Treatment of Data

The researcher will collect data on the time spent on TikTok by

Grade 11 General Academic Strand students and their corresponding

productivity levels. Survey questionnaire will be distributed to the

randomly selected participants asking them to report their average

daily screen time on TikTok and their productivity level. The average

screen time for teens 15-18 years old is almost 7.5 hours a day

(Johnson, 2022). In terms of screen time categories, students have

less screen time than the average of 7.5 hours per day, while others
PAGE 1

have too much screen time, which is defined as more than 7.5 hours

per day. Having too much screen time can have negative effects on

academic performance, as students may be distracted or overwhelmed

by the constant flow of information on TikTok.

When it comes to productivity levels, there is a relationship

between screen time on TikTok and productivity. always (4):

Represents students who perceive themselves as consistently

productive in their academic work. Frequently (3): Represents

students who perceive themselves as productive most of the time but

not consistently. Sometimes (2): Represents students who perceive

their productivity to fluctuate, with periods ofn;n productivity and

periods of lower productivity. Hardly ever (1): Represents students

who perceive themselves as rarely being productive (Duval County

Public School).

If a significant number of students who answered more than the

average time spent on TikTok and also responded with “hardly ever”

for productivity, it suggests a negative relationship. Higher TikTok

usage may be associated with lower productivity levels. If a significant

number of students who responded with less than the average time

spent on TikTok also responded with “always” for productivity, it

suggests a positive relationship. Higher TikTok usage may not

necessarily impact productivity negatively.
