ABSTRACT

Among other things, this study looked into how DSASHS students' academic

performance was affected by their use of the internet of education pupils as fact or

fiction. Consequently, it may be said that based on the results of the study, there is a

definite correlation between the respondents' academic success and their use of the

internet actuality as opposed to lip service. Thus, the internet offers the chance to learn

specialized skills and enhances boosts pupils' exam performance; encourages them to

study in advance of their teachers. Among other things, reading competency fosters

students' computer abilities for academic pursuits.

Still, a small percentage of respondents claimed that using the internet to

improve academically was distracting rather than helpful keeping people from frequently

attending seminars and capturing their attention. Based on it, it was suggested that school

counselors arrange educational programs for pupils on with the assistance of the

administrators. How to utilize the Internet to Enhance Academic Achievement. The

understudy institution's students ought to be urged to use the internet to look for

resources that would help them succeed academically execution. Additionally, it's critical

to teach school counselors about computers during their training so that they are able to

provide appropriate guidance on how students should use the internet in relation to their

academic work.

A. Background of the study

Internet is a big part of the world. The Internet let us do lots of

things like shopping online, buying food using our phone and it will get

delivered in a few minutes in our door step, we can play games with other

people, we can watch movies on our cellular phone, laptop and computer,

we can get information in just a few seconds, we can use i t for study

and doing research. The students in this time uses internet for their

education from getting reviewers online, finding the definition of a word or

gather information for their thesis or research. If the students are using the

internet in their education then it means they their academic performance

will be affected in a positive or negative effect. How can their

academic performance differ with using the internet and without? How

many minutes/hours does the students uses the internet got education purposes?

B. Statement of the problem

The research aims to find the relations of the students’ usage frequency of

the internet and the effects on the student’s academic performance.

The internet is widely used by the students on their academic purposes,

games, entertainment and many other things and the students using the

internet will have their academic performance affected.

Page | 6
There different type of gadgets that the students use to access the internet

and we the researchers aims to find what are the gadgets that the students

use the least and use the most

Internet is a very useful tool for the students and we want to find out if the

students who use the internet excels in academic performance and non

academic related things.

In school there are different activities like homework, written works

performance task, research and reviews and the students do all of those

things but we want to see what activities does the student use the internet

the most.

C. Significance of the study

Students: This research will help my fellow students learn how the internet affected

academic performance negatively and positively.

Teachers: This will help the teachers guide their students on how to use properly the

internet for their education. It could provide them with the power to decide independently

when and how they will use the internet to improve their academic performance.

Page | 7
Researchers: This study can help others who want to study the same research or any

research that may be related to it. For their own research projects, they can use this study

as a resource.

Parental Guidance: The study can help parents learn about their children's internet

usage and how it affects their children’s academic performance. This knowledge may

help parents by creating guidelines and offering appropriate guidance.

Government: This study can help learners relate to the government their essential need

to access free wifi in school to easily surf information needed in their study to increase

their learning performance especially for Grade 12 Senior High School.

D. Hypothesis

The student’s use of the internet will have effects on their academic performance

this will vary on how they use and how frequently the use it. It will improve and

makes their performance much faster but at the same it will affect their behavior may

leads to poor academic performance by using too much internet usage also can brought

addiction thru other entertainment online. This study shows us the effects of internet

usage in the academic performance of Grade 12 Students in DSASHS. The goal of this

research is to easily acknowledge the impacts of internet usage and how to prevent too

much exposure. We want also to know more about their behavior in using internet.

Definition of terms

To have a clearer view of the different terminologies used in

the study, the following terms are defined.

Academic performance-this term refers to the measurement of student

achievement across various academic subject. Educators typically gauge

achievement through classroom performance and results from standardized

tests. The measurable effects of a student's educational endeavors, which

can often be assessed by examining their grades, test results, and overall

achievement in school.

Academic purpose-this term refers to the time learners will be used in

interacting with the internet for productive and successful engagement in

learning important academic content. The more time learners use the

internet in relation to academic purpose the more learning achieve.

Usage of the internet- includes all of the actions and activities that

students engage in on the web, such as communicating, conducting

research, and obtaining access to educational resources.

Internet-This term refers to an electronic global communication system

connecting millions of other small networks that provide a variety of

information and communication facilities all over the world.

Page |
11
Personal purpose-This term refers to navigating the internet in non-

academic or non- work related activities, either goal-driven or not.

CHAPTER II: REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

The integration of the internet has spread out, changing students learning and academic

achievement. According to Dharet et al. (2016), there is a significant correlation between

a student’s academic performance and their use of the internet for educational purposes.

Jhoselle et al. (2021) found that the internet changes the behavior of students in terms of

interacting, socializing, and studying. The study by Rodolfo et al. (2018) shows that the

internet is being used by students as an instrument of information. With access to the

internet, students can easily access a wide range of information in a matter of seconds.

However, as Illyn et al. (2022) points out that the presence of the internet has been

integrated into our daily lives and is being used by people across all ages for access to the

information that can be found on the internet. According to Jerom et al. (2023), the

students using the internet will have positive and negative effects on their academic

performances. The use of the internet should be observed and learned so the students can

take advantage of the positive effects while lowering the disadvantages and the negative

effects that it might have.

Before the rise of internet, the students used books, article papers, etc. to study

and gather information for academic purposes. Teachers used traditional ways in teaching

like much writing on the board and use of cartolina or Manila paper to teach learners. As

technology grows around the world the internet is one of them. The internet can be used

for Entertainment, news, communication, socializing, acquiring information, and

education. The students learned how to use the internet and turned it to their advantage,

Page | 13
helping them in their academic performance.

Learners as of today are fond of using different social media and it shows that the

interactions between students or teachers and students increase with the use of the

internet through different social media platforms platforms like Facebook, Messenger,

Twitter and others (Lagaree, 2015). Communication is enhanced, share their resources

rapidly and they can access attain the materials in connection with their lessons after

class. Not only this, social media also develops students' understanding to create and

arouse their interest in academic subjects (Lau, Lui, & Chu, 2016).

For Instance, Habes et al. (2018) researched the influence of internet use on

students' academic performance, implying that internet use has a positive impact on

students' academic performance. The use of the internet provides opportunities to search

for academic information as well as utilize social networking platforms as a medium of

information exchange. Harrath and alobaidy (2016) study revealed that many students

expressed satisfaction with the use of social networking sites as a way to gather data or

collect information for their studies. In connection with this Desmal (2017) also indicated

that the use of the internet and social networking platforms brings benefits and

opportunities for students to support their learning process. However, it was also

discovered that some students, paid more attention to platforms like Facebook, which

negatively affected their academic performance.

From the study of Nimra Nawaz, PhD Candidate about the impact of internet on

academic performance of University students in Pakistan (Nawaz, 2021), a significant

Page | 14
positive level of relationship between internet usage and academic learners of students.

The result showed that the performance greatly increased after using the internet. The

students use the internet morea than books to study and gather information for their

study. This shows that the internet covers the wide needs of the students since the internet

can do a lot of things (ESoegoto & Tjokroadiponto 2018). The student’s usage of the

internet has become a daily routine that cannot be changed and that affects how they

socialize, connect and interact to others. Social media helps students to communicate

with their classmates and it also helps with their academic performance because they can

use social media to gather data and information. (Cruz et al., 2021).

Now that the Internet is used all over the world for student’s education the

students who can’t access the internet are now left behind. According to Salazar et al

having no internet access is one of the reasons why their academic performance is lower

than the students who have internet access. (2018). without internet access, students can

miss out on information or losing communication with their fellow students or teachers

which can affect their academic performance. (Lynch M, 2017).

Quality learning content, content design quality, communication, functionality, user

interface design, availability, personalization, responsiveness, and offering a

collaborative learning environment were every factor in students' acceptance of web-

based mobile learning. (Fabian et al., 2018). The Internet has always been an important

educational tool, since both the Internet and Information exchange, communication, and

knowledge are all important aspects of education.

Internet has a big role in society and the academic performance of learners. With

a few clicks, student can gather information on different platforms and sites about their

Page | 15
education. Misused internet may lead to poor performance in school. Students who have

the internet have a higher chance that their academic performance is higher than students

who do not use the internet. How students use the internet can gain or lose knowledge in

their education. Academic performance is positively impacted by the Internet; research

indicates that learners who use the Internet benefit from plenty of methods. Nowadays,

the belief that education helps individuals build more prosperous lives in societies is one

of the reasons why people place such a high value on it. Considering this, in the modern

era, having access to the Internet is essential for improving the quality of education in

many ways. It improves the acquisition of knowledge, information, and educational

resources. Increasing opportunities for learning inside and outside of the classroom as a

result. Although using the internet has a significant impact on pupils' academic

performance, it also provides advantages. Students have advantages and chances to help

their learning processes when they use the internet and social networking sites.

CHAPTER III: METHODS OF RESEARCH

A. Method of Research

This method of research known as quantitative research is focused primary on the

methodical gathering and analysis of numerical data. This kind of research is

often used to measure variables, identify correlations, and test hypotheses in

order to provide answers to particular research questions or verify hypotheses. One

of the main characteristics of this type of research is that the results can be

depicted in numerical form.

B. Subjects of study

In this study, the participants will be selected to participate in the process. The

respondents will be Grade 12 Senior high school students at the Dolores Stand Alone

senior high school. A total of twenty-five students were asked to complete the

needed information in conducting this study. Of the twenty-five participants, thirteen

were males and twelve were females. The participants were all single in status. The

survey method will be used in the study. The respondents will be given survey

questions to be answered. They will be asked questions about their opinions and

experiences. The sampling method was used to identify the respondents in the

study.

Page | 17
C. Description of Research Instrument

The strategy of gathering data for a study by asking people questions about

your research is commonly referred to as the survey method. It is a method of asking

people questions about their opinions and experience in a certain topic.

D. Data Gathering Procedure

After the research was done, questionnaires were organized and validated. The

researchers produced copies equal to the number of respondents. At the same time,

the letter of request to the concerned school administrator who will be joining was

prepared. The letter of request was delivered personally to the school administrator

by the researchers. Then the survey questionnaires were also presented to the

school administrator. It was this time when the researchers explained the

details of the study and how selected students will accomplish the survey

questionnaires.

Page | 18
Following the presentation to the head of the school. They were left to answer the

survey questions. Twenty-five students, twelve of whom were male and thirteen of whom

were female, received these. On the same day, the completed questionnaires were

collected. The questionnaire results that were recovered were organized. The respondents'

responses were compiled by the researchers.

Page | 19
The formula that we used to calculate the frequency of choices

that the respondents chose is P = F multiply by 100 over N.

In the formula that we used P represent the Percentage of the

total answer while F represents the frequency or how frequent they

chose an answer and N represents the no. or how many respondents

answered the questionnaire. The formula will be used in every single

choices of a question. The formula helped us calculate how many

percentage of respondents chose the same answer.

CHAPTER V: Summary of Findings, Conclusion and Recommendation

SUMMARY

Internet is the global network of servers, computers, phones and other devices. The

internet allows this devices and technology to communicate with each other that allows to

exchange files, information and other services that the internet provides in today’s world

the internet is used by most people every day. People use it to communicate, entertain

their selves, gather information, download files and etc. the internet has been proven to

be useful to us humans in our daily lives. Since most people can

Access the internet it means that the students can also use it for their personal use and for

educational

Purposes. The internet greatly helps students on their academic performance because they

can gather

And search for information that they need fast. The students can also use the internet to

study, do

Activities and school works. Each students has different frequency usage of the internet

and that can

Affect their academic performance and they also use different kind of devices that they

prefer while

They access the internet. The internet usage will affect the academic performance of the

student’s base

Page | 38
On how long they use the internet for too much and too less can affect their academic

performance

Negatively or positively.

CONCLUSSION

Based on the data that we gathered on our survey at DSASHS students, the internet

has a significant impact on their behavior and academic excellence. Be exposed on the

internet has positive effect they can easily finish their assignments or online activities and

at the same time they can also use internet on their self-entertainment like playing games

and watching vlogs and get updated on their surroundings. Internet usage may affect their

reading because they just watching or viewing something rather than practicing their

skill. And also it’s writing because they just want to use ChatGPT on their academic

attainment. Using the internet may lead them to become lazy person and doesn’t want to

take daily routine.

When used for learning and study, the internet has a generally extremely good

impact on academic performance. However, it is advised that internet use be curtailed

and possibly restricted to academic purposes if other uses of the platform are more

concentrated on (instead of for learning) to the point where a student is greatly influenced

by their study habits and distracted from their academic responsibilities (for such a

Page | 39
student may regain balance in their study habits.)

RECOMMENDATION

Based on our research the data that we gathered give us enough knowledge about

on how internet usage affects the academic performance of DSASHS students. Giving us

prior and sufficient data among our researchers. Our research is a vital on our society

because we can easily determine on the internet affects the academic performance of the

students. It has greater impact it’s either for positive or negatively affects their studies.

On the following statement which gives as a brief or few suggestions that we can used on

the future.

 Practicing using books or other sources to gather more data on your studies.

 Managing your time with your studies and less the unnecessarily things.

 Having spent your time with your family rather than playing games.

 Investigate or check the credibility of the author or the data that you gather.

 Availability of the fastest and most reliable internet.

 Knowing what is the most appropriate browser in your pc or cellphone.

Page | 40
 Conducting every school, a seminar that gives them knowledge that what are the

effects of internet usage on their academic performance.

RESEARCH REFLECTION

EJ Angelo I Mabuti

A few months ago our teacher gave us research to do she made

us pick our topic and who we want to group with. I chose to group

with my cousin and my friend and then we brainstorm to pick what

topic we want and we chose the topic about internet and academic

performance of students.

I thought the research was gonna be easy because our teacher

gave us a lot of time and I’m comfortable with my group. We could

have finish our research in a month or two but we wasted our time

because we thought it was easy. We did chapter 1 in the 1st month but

we struggled since some of our work was wrong or incomplete then after

that we did a chapter 2 and chapter 3 but we had a hard time on related

literature since what we did is wrong and we redid it but and took a lot of

time since we don’t know how to properly write a related literature. We

said to each other that we need to finish the research before January but

we only made small progress on December and we tried to make

Pampanga highs school students our respondents but we chose a bad

Page | 57
time to get permission from the principal of Pampanga high school because

when we go to Pampanga high school they were having Christmas party

and the principal weren’t there so we didn’t get permission and we got

stressed because of that but we did have an back up plan and that was

to contacted our friends and classmates who is going to university of the

assumption to be our respondents. It was successful because they answered

our questionnaire but we didn’t reached the minimum respondents we

needed we only got half of the minimum respondents. We tried to

contact everyone but only few answered but then our teacher decided to

reduce the research chapters and we didn’t need to get the minimum

respondents anymore. Our stress was lifted up when the teacher told us

that she reduced the chapters that we needed to do so we continued our

research and we finished it if our teacher didn’t reduce the chapters we

won’t be able to finish our research on time.

If we didn’t slack off, we could have done the full research 1-2

months and we would have a lot for free time for ourselves and we could

have finished the other activities. With the research activity was given to us.

I learned some things like. If you can do it then do it now and I learned

that I should know which things to prioritize doing.

Page | 58
RENZ GONZALES MANITI

Research is one of the vital subject that we need to accomplished and passed. A

few months ago our Teacher gave us a task and a study that we need to conduct a

research study about on our topic. Our strand manage to make a research study so that we

can specifically solve the issue. Our goal is to manage to solve the issue regarding

internet usage and what are the effects on their academic performance. Before we

conduct our research study we planned to search or locate and most appropriate school

for us to determine the assurance of data we collect is reliable.

We choose the Pampanga High School but unfortunately we can’t conduct our

survey due to lack of time in their studies because they’re taking Quarterly exam and the

School Head isn’t available with the moment. But suddenly we make another planned to

conduct survey in Dolores Stand Alone Senior High School, we went to its office and ask

him a permission to conduct our research study in his school supervision, and we manage

to get a permission and he signed the permit so we can manage to conduct our survey.

And the day of our research we gathered the information that we needed so that

we can finish our research study. As the research survey was finished the data we

gathered supports our research study on what are the significant impacts on internet usage

in their academic performance.

Page | 59
Our determined what the importance of our research for them and for us. For

them we monitored their behavior in using internet and what are the effects of it to their

academic performance based on the survey. For us we develop teamwork, coordination,

cooperation and passion to finish our study. Every one of us make a significant role in

our research we good communication we can finish our research study much better and

much accurate.

As our research is finish, based on the data that we gathered we hope that we

gave to future researcher a knowledge about what our the negative or positive impacts of

internet usage in their academic performance.

Page | 60

The journey in conducting this research study was not easy. We

had experienced so many challenges or struggles but the knowledge that

we gained in conducting this study made me learn a lot. Through this another

kind of friendship was built we my co- researchers.

As the teacher told us that the class will make research I

immediately thought of what would be a good title for the research and

who will be my co-researchers. The teacher instructed us to form a

group. I felt so lucky because belonged to the group where I felt

comfortable working with them.

The first thing we did was set a day for us to meet and

brainstorm to put up the research title. Then we decided that the title

would be Student Usage of the Internet on Their Academic Performance.

As we went on the research, each member was assigned to do a specific

task to accomplish to lessen the work in doing the research and there

would be a division of labor.

The first part given to me was to conduct research on the Review

of Related Literature (Filipino Author). I accomplished it and presented it

to my co-researchers.

After we finished the first and second chapters, the researchers presented

Page | 61
the accomplished tasks to the instructor. It was a little bit feeling of

nervousness but we surpassed it. As a result, she gave us suggestions on

how to improve and arrange the Review of Related Literature.

A few days passed we went to Dolores Stand Alone Senior High

School (DSASHS) for the survey that the researchers will going to

conduct, but unfortunately the principal was not there and there was a

program happening on that day. Then we came back to school. We just

decided to join other school and ask them.

Then I made the parts Data Gathering Procedure and Subjects of the Study.

In making these made me more knowledgeable and I know I will bring

these in going to a higher level of my study. My nervousness turned into

excitement in doing the research.
