Rewrite the words as a number.

Rewrite the number in words.

It is super important to spell each word properly.

Remember: a hyphen “ – ” is used to join the tens with the ones after 20.

Lesson 2 – Place Values

SUMMARY

Digit
Any of the numbers from 0 to 9.

Remember:
When a question asks for “what digit” you should only write one number for the answer.

Example:
In the number 6895,

• The digit 6 is in the thousands place.


• The digit 8 is in the hundreds place.
• The digit 9 is in the tens place.
• The digit 5 is in the ones place.
Place Value Chart
A chart that helps us define the value represented by a digit
in a number based on its location within that number.

Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones

We usually use “number discs” with a place value chart.

Example:
What number is this?

Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones

5 thousands 2 hundreds 3 tens 7 ones

The number is:

The value of the digit 5 is 5000 The value of the digit 3 is 30

The value of the digit 2 is 200 The value of the digit 7 is 7


Write the number in its Expanded Form
Rewrite the number as an addition of its parts.

Example:

𝟐𝟖𝟑𝟓 2000 + 800 + 30 + 5

𝟕𝟏𝟏𝟖 7000 + 100 + 10 + 8

Lesson 3 – Comparing and Ordering Numbers

SUMMARY

Greater than / Smaller than


These are the phrases we use to compare two numbers.

Example:

10 is greater than 5.

8 is smaller than 17.

To compare bigger numbers, this is the procedure:


1. We first compare the “thousands”.
2. If both numbers have the same digit on the thousands place, then we
compare the “hundreds”.
3. If both numbers have the same digit on the hundreds place, then we
compare the “tens”.
4. If both numbers have the same digit on the tens place, then we compare
the “ones”.

The number that has the bigger number first is considered to be the
greatest number.
Example:
Both numbers have the same digit in the hundreds
place, but we see that 4 is bigger than 3 in the tens
Which is greater, 233 or 241? place.

241 is greater than 233 This is why 241 is greater than 233.

Both numbers have the same digit in the thousands


place and the hundreds place, but we see that 2 is
Which is smaller, 3420 or 3480? smaller than 8 in the tens place.

3420 is smaller than 3480 This is why 3420 is smaller than 3480.

Example:
Arrange the numbers from smallest to greatest.

753 , 321 , 478 , 847

Arrange the numbers from greatest to smallest.

2753 , 2321 , 1478 , 4847
