I. INTRODUCTION
I.1. Reason for choosing the topic
At the beginning of 2024, Vietnam has 78,44 million Internet users, accounting
about 79% total population. In addition, the number of social network users also
reached 72,7 million, approximately equivalent to 73% of the total population.

students at Phenikaa University” will be an important contribution in discussing and
pointing out the negative impacts of social networks on students at Phenikaa
University. In particular, the study also offers some solutions in building a culture of
effective social network use to limit those negative.
“Social network” is a concept that many researchers in many fields have defined

In general, each type of social network has special features and functions that it
serves for different purposes and attract a different audience of users. However, they
all provide a platform to connect people with each other, create community and
content sharing.
II. METHODS
This article references the research paper of Tran et al (2023). There are two
main method used here: qualitative research and quantitative research
In order to find out which social networking sites are being used a lot by
Phenikaa University students, how often and for what purpose, the research team
conducted a survey of more than 550 students at Phenikaa. The survey results are
shown in table 3.1 below:
The survey shows that students have the habit of using social networks with quite
high frequency. The number of students who "regularly use" is up to 75%. This shows
that social networks have become an indispensable means in student life. They spend a
lot of time connecting and sharing with friends. On the contrary, the number of
students who "occasionally use" or "only use when necessary" only fluctuates very
small from 3% - 22%, which shows that not all students spend a lot of time and
attention. focus on social networks. However, regarding "not using social networks",
the level is 0%, meaning there are no students who do not use social networks. In
summary, the survey results have proven that social networks are a particularly
important information channel, whether used regularly or infrequently.
Data shows that the most popular use of social networks is for chatting/sending
messages with a usage rate of up to 95.6%. With this data, we can see that students
tend to use social networks for the purpose of communicating and communicating
online. Due to social networks, it creates easier communication conditions with
relatives and friends,....
The next aim is to update the news with a usage rate of up to 85.6%. This shows
that social media has become an important source of information for users, helping
them to keep up to date with the latest information about events, providing information
about many segments of society.
Making friends is also a popular purpose with a usage rate of 81.6%. Social
networks provide a connection environment for users so they can socialize, make
friends and share with each other. Some social media users also use it to find old
friends and relatives with a usage rate of 62.4%. Researching students' social media
intentions can help you better understand how they interact with each other and with
the community. They use social media to make friends, share information, learn, or
participate in professional groups
According to the survey, only 2.2% of students use social networks for less than
1 hour a day; The number of students spending 1 to 3 hours a day using social
networks accounts for 43.1%; Students spend 3 to 5 hours using it, accounting for
32.55. This number is quite high, proving that social networks are becoming an
indispensable part in the lives of modern students. In the future, this number will
certainly continue to increase with the continuous development of technology and
social networks. In addition, up to 10.4% of students spend 5 to 7 hours a day on social
networks. Besides, 11.8% of students spend more than 7 hours a day on social
networks.
According to the survey, the percentage of students who feel their learning is
affected by social media use is 65.5%. This shows that social media can affect the
learning of Phenikaa University students when viewed from a multifaceted perspective
depending on the purpose of using social media in learning. If students know how to
make the right use of it, the influence of social media will be effectively utilized. If the
excessive use of social networks will have the exact opposite effect, it can be negative
in the learning of Phenikaa University students. Spending too much time on social
media can also lead to sleep deprivation and stress, which can affect students' health
and psychological well-being. Students spending too much time during the day on
social media will affect their sleep health. According to a study conducted by the Sleep
Junkie research group on 2,012 samples, the habit of using social media before going
to bed has a significant impact on sleep quality [1].
In addition, the use of social media can also affect other aspects of students'
lives. With rates of 43.6% and 50.9%, respectively, students' health and psychology
can also be affected by social media use. Viewing a lot of unhelpful information on
social media can also affect the cultural aspect of students, such as reducing their
ability to acquire knowledge and reducing their ability to participate in cultural
activities.
However, not all aspects of life are affected by social media. According to the
survey, social media use only affects 10.8% of students' jobs. This suggests that, if
used appropriately, social media may not interfere with students' work activities.
Therefore, in order to use social networks effectively, students should establish
time to use social networks appropriately, avoid spending too much time on social
media and balance between using social media and other academic, cultural, health,
psychological and work activities. In addition, students should also be selective about
information on social networks and not be distracted by unhelpful information.
III.3.1. The impact of social media on students' academic performance
Chart 3.1: The influence of social media on students' academic performance
Comparing these findings with the research conducted by Hoang Phu Hung
(2019) on the impact of social media on students at Hanoi University of Home Affairs,
it is evident that the rate of health issues among Phenikaa University students
attributed to social media is higher, contrasting with the minimal 0.2% impact
observed among students at Hanoi University of Home Affairs.[2]
IV.DISCUSSION
IV.1.Aspects influenced by social networks
IV.1.1. General assessment of the use of social networks in the life and study
of students at Phenikaa University.
Social media is undeniably a valuable resource for students, offering easy access
to information. However, its influence on academic performance cannot be
overlooked. Excessive use often leads to distraction, diverting students' focus from
their studies to entertainment activities. This shift can foster unhealthy habits and
disconnect students from their real-world learning experiences, negatively impacting
their academic achievements. Yet, when utilized wisely, social media can enhance
learning by providing access to educational content and facilitating connections with
peers who share similar interests.
Our research confirms the significant impact of social media on students'
academic and personal lives. While it offers avenues for information seeking and
socializing, it also poses risks. Students may fall into the trap of spending excessive
time on social platforms, reducing their productivity and analytical abilities. Moreover,
addiction to online gaming and social updates can disrupt sleep patterns, leading to
fatigue and compromised health.
These health issues can have profound effects on students' ability to concentrate
and perform academically. To address these challenges, students should prioritize self-
care by maintaining a balanced lifestyle, seeking adequate rest, and adopting effective
time management strategies. Seeking timely medical assistance for any health
concerns is also crucial.
Comparing our findings with similar studies, such as the research by Nguyen
Lan, reveals common trends in students' social media usage patterns. Many students
spend significant amounts of time on social platforms, for socializing and information
gathering, often without specific location constraints.
To excel academically in the digital age, students must learn to manage their
social media usage effectively. Seeking reliable information, engaging in meaningful
interactions, and setting boundaries between study and leisure time are essential
practices. Universities can support students in this endeavor by providing educational
programs focused on digital literacy and time management. Additionally,
implementing campus policies to regulate social media usage can promote a healthier
learning environment.
In conclusion, while social media offers numerous benefits, its proper utilization
is key to mitigating its negative impacts on students' academic and personal lives.
Through informed decision-making and proactive measures, students can harness the
potential of social media to enhance their learning outcomes and overall well-being.
IV.1.2. General assessment of the use of social networks in the life and study
of students at Phenikaa University.
In evaluating the role of social networks in the lives and academic pursuits of
Phenikaa University students, it is evident that while these platforms serve as
convenient hubs for information exchange, their impact on academic performance is
considerable. Excessive use often leads to distractions, diverting students' attention
from their studies and toward leisure activities like video consumption and gaming.
This shift can foster detrimental habits and detach students from their educational
pursuits, impacting their academic outcomes.
However, when employed judiciously, social media offers avenues for
information access, online learning, and peer interaction, fostering academic growth
and personal development. Despite these benefits, the negative ramifications of social
media use cannot be ignored. Students may find themselves succumbing to time
wastage and dependency on these platforms, diminishing their productivity and
analytical capabilities. Moreover, the proliferation of misinformation on social media
can distort students' perspectives and impede their critical thinking abilities.
Furthermore, excessive engagement with social media, particularly through
gaming, chats, and constant updates, can disrupt students' sleep patterns, leading to
fatigue and compromised health. These health concerns, if left unchecked, can
severely impact students' concentration and overall academic performance.
Comparative analysis with similar studies, such as the research conducted by
Nguyen Lan Nguyen, underscores the universality of high social media usage among
students. The prevalence of purposes like information seeking, socializing, and
networking is consistent, with a significant portion of students dedicating extensive
time to these activities daily.
To navigate the challenges posed by social media, students must prioritize
effective time management and cultivate a balanced lifestyle. Seeking reliable
information, engaging in meaningful interactions, and establishing clear boundaries
between study and leisure time are essential strategies for optimizing academic
performance.
Institutional interventions, such as educational programs focused on digital
literacy and time management, can further support students in navigating the
complexities of social media. Additionally, implementing campus-wide regulations to
govern social media activity can promote a healthier learning environment conducive
to academic success.
In conclusion, while social media presents opportunities for learning and growth,
it's prudent utilization is paramount. By adopting strategic measures and fostering a
culture of responsible usage, students can harness the potential of social media to
enhance their academic pursuits and personal development in the digital era.
IV.2.Causes of social media impact on students
The effects of social media on students have been widely researched. Here are
some common reasons why social networks negatively affect students:
Time spent: Students often spend a lot of time on social networks, which affects
their studies and other work. This affects students' schedule management habits, life
rhythms and biological hours are disrupted, which is unhealthy for children's lifestyles.
Schools can increase student education about the use of social networks by
creating workshops, seminars or extracurricular activities. Most of the time, the closer
the topics are to students, the more interested they are. Social networks are one of the
issues that receive a lot of attention in today's society. Through the above activities,
students will have the opportunity to listen to experiences and lessons when using
social networks. They can share their worries as well as the problems they are facing
so that experts can advise them on solutions. Because in the previous section, the
research article mentioned that: social networks address all issues surrounding
students, including health and psychology. This means that it is very serious and if not
resolved, it will cause serious consequences. In short, schools play an important role in
orienting and creating opportunities for students to get acquainted and use social
networks to bring the highest efficiency to students' studies and lives.
The impact of social networks also depends greatly on family interest and
support. Families should pay attention to and encourage their children to participate in
many outside activities such as playing sports, reading books, and club activities to
exercise and improve necessary skills. Students need to be trained regularly and on a
variety of topics to gain interest and develop comprehensively.
Many students take advantage of using social networks as a way to relieve stress.
They need a long time after school or overtime to access social networks. But the
problem here is that they use too much time. This will make them even more tired
because the content posted there is really too attractive. Therefore, parents need to
monitor and understand to help them focus more and feel less lonely. Many times,
gathering family and talking to each other more will be a way to help students have
more joy in life. This is also a way for them to be less susceptible to the double-edged
sword called social networks.
First, students need to set goals and limit the time they use social networks
festival. Instead of spending too much time surfing Facebook, Instagram or TikTok,...
they should take control by creating a schedule or using time management
applications: RescueTime, Trello, or Google Calendar... The this application will assist
students in scheduling daily activities, setting time for each task and reminding them to
do it. In addition, these applications also have the function of evaluating work progress
and promoting work efficiency. In short, using social networks should only be a time
to relieve stress. Therefore, students should allocate their time appropriately.
Second, students should only share selected content to post on social networks.
That is valuable content for life and learning. Please share your views and joys. Don't
share personal information. Because social networks are a place to share and find
sympathetic people. As a student, use social media to learn, not to vent. Students
should not engage in offensive, disturbing, or inaccurate content. Be smart social
network users to bring value to your life.
Third, students need to limit contact with electronic devices such as televisions,
phones, computers, laptops, etc. while studying because they can easily cause
distraction and affect learning efficiency. Therefore, students should only study while
going online when they need to find information online to do homework, to avoid
getting distracted and leading to wandering on social networking sites.
Finally, if you feel that social networks are reducing your work and study
efficiency, temporarily remove social networks for a while. It can help you focus more
on work, study and life balance. If you don't want to completely quit social media,
limit the time dedicated to social media and use it more effectively. All studies say that
you should not use social networks for more than 2 hours a day, because you will feel
sluggish, lose focus and balance in life.
V. CONCLUSION
Research on the impact of social networks on life and learning of students at
Phenikaa University has shown that social networks have become an important and
influential factor in the lives and studies of students at the school. Besides the benefits,
social networks also leave limitations and challenges for students. The highlight of this
study is the detailed analysis and evaluation of the effects of social networks on
students' lives and learning, including the impact on time management, learning
outcomes, social interactions and negative effects. From those results, we have come
up with solutions helps students take advantage of the benefits of social networks and
limit negative effects. Solutions include: time management, selecting posted content,
attention from family and direction from school. With the above solutions, we hope to
help students at Phenikaa University and other universities take advantage of the
benefits of social networks and achieve good academic results.
