We have seen some cases where the system oil BN (Base Number) increase has
occurred faster than expected, for which reason we have investigated the factors
influencing such a situation. The increased BN comes from cylinder oil additives
carried down from the scavenge air space.
Service tests have shown that a modified scraper ring in groove No. 4, without relief
grooves on the underside, has significantly increased the amount of drain oil with a
high BN from the separate drain, with the result that the BN number increase in the
crankcase is kept on a satisfactory level.
With the original design of the scraper ring in groove No. 4, there is a risk that
scraped-off drain oil will escape through the relief grooves into the crankcase and,
thereby, enter the system oil.
The original stuffing box design and the new standard are shown in Enclosure A.
We recommend that this modification is introduced during the next regular overhaul of
stuffing boxes, to minimise the change of system oil properties.
To facilitate ordering of the modified scraper ring, we also enclose spare parts plate
S902-0023, which can be used for reference purposes when ordering.

In this respect, we also draw your attention to our Service Letter SL02-408 of July
2002. Besides a general description of system oil considerations, this service letter
provides recommendations regarding limits for the BN (and other analytical data),
which is allowed to reach a level of 30 before renewal or replenishment is called for.
It is our experience that in some cases system oil is replaced although not really
needed.
