Dear Sirs
In 1997 we introduced a cast iron spindle guide to replace the former bronze spindle
guide. This change of material was initiated to increase resistance against wear and
corrosion, and to avoid sticking valve spindles as occasionally reported in the past.
Our service test revealed excellent performance of the cast iron spindle guide, and
subsequent service reports from regular service confirm the test results.
As we still receive reports of failures associated with the use of bronze spindle
guides, we recommend to shipowners and engine managers involved in the
operation of the above engine types that the existing bronze spindle guides are
replaced at the next overhaul of valves in service and, of course, on the spare
valves.
MC engines of earlier versions than those mentioned above would also benefit from
a replacement of the spindle guide, as the cast iron material has shown improved
resistance to wear and corrosion.
We ask you kindly to contact our Diesel Service department for the supply of
replacement cast iron bushings.
Yours faithfully,
MAN B&W Diesel A/S
