Latch Coupling
At the heart of the Halliburton multilateral system is the
latch coupling, which provides an anchoring mechanism
for accurate placement of the window aperture. The latch
coupling enables full bore drift to the main bore and forms
part of the main bore casing. It becomes a permanent
feature, thus permitting an accurate and repeatable
method of locating Halliburton multilateral tools at the
precise depth and orientation for exit from the window.

Applications
In principle, interventionless control of any hydraulically
operated tool can be achieved remotely with the integration
of an eMotion unit. The application of the eMotion unit
therefore varies depending on the type of slave valve that it
is integrated with and its planned position within the well.
Operation
The eMotion unit is connected directly to the hydraulic open
and close ports on the slave valve. It has integrated pressure
and temperature sensors that it uses to monitor the well
conditions and is programmed to pump hydraulic fluid down
the relevant control line to either open or close the valve
whenever a specific well condition (trigger) is detected.

Casing Alignment
The Halliburton casing alignment tool has been used to
successfully realign and permanently stabilize many
parted casing strings. The casing alignment tool is made
up by connecting threads at the lower end of the EZ Drill®
(poppet valve) squeeze packer. The EZ Drill SVB squeeze
packer can be used in conjunction with a poppet-type
valve adapter kit. When lowered into the well, the tapered
nose of the alignment tool guides the main body into the
shifted lower casing (Figure 1).
Casing Stabilization
The EZ Drill (or adapted EZ Drill SVB) squeeze packer is
set by tubing or drillpipe to pack off within the upper
string. The packer forms an upper seal for placement of
permanent stabilizing cement behind the realigned casing
and holds the alignment tool in place across the parted
section of the casing. Cement slurry is then pumped
through the squeeze packer and the alignment tool filling
the casing and the formation annular space, surrounding
the casing alignment tool (Figure 2). After the cement
sets, the squeeze packer, alignment tool, and cement are
drilled out using a conventional rock bit, leaving a uniform

Equipment
After the problem well is evaluated, the proper alignment
tool is built. Casing alignment tools are custom
manufactured for specific jobs because of the variety of
diameter/length combinations possible. Alignment tool
ODs vary according to individual casing weights to
minimize clearance between the alignment tool and the
casing ID. This helps establish minimum alignment
variation between upper and lower realigned casing
sections. Alignment tool lengths vary because casing
separation lengths vary as do the lengths of damaged
casing. Experience proves that 10 ft of alignment tool
should extend into good pipe on both sides of the
damaged or parted casing.

Design Features
BP hydraulic setting tools can be run on drillpipe, tubing,
or coiled tubing. Two versions of the BP hydraulic setting
tool are available: fill and non-fill.
» Fill-type BP hydraulic setting tools have a hydrostatically
operated fill valve that allows the workstring to fill
during the trip into the hole. This fill valve has shear
pins that are preset at the surface to a predetermined
hydrostatic pressure. Once the fill valve reaches the
preset hydrostatic pressure, the pins shear and the fill
valve closes and locks. The fill valve cannot be opened
after it closes.
» Non-fill BP hydraulic setting tools have no means for
filling the workstring on the trip in, so an auxiliary fill
valve (RTTS® bypass, etc.) or filling from the surface is
necessary. The differential pressure between the
wellbore fluid and dry workstring does not adversely
load the setting mechanism during the trip in.

Top of Cement
Swellpacker® isolation systems used above the top of
cement (TOC) help prevent pressure migration to surface Swellpacker®
(sustained casing pressure) from lower reservoirs, System
without regard to the competency of the original cement
operation. Swellpacker TOC systems help prevent
sustained casing pressure should the well cement
debond from the casing during the life of the well, which
could create channels for pressure to migrate from the
formation. Swellpacker TOC systems work independently
of other operations, regardless of conditions, as long as Seal
fuel is present. The packers are normally placed in any Stack
upper casing string to provide a positive seal. The system
can also be adapted to include a one-way check valve in
the element itself, which allows the system to hold
pressure from below (reservoir), while allowing any
pressure buildup above the Swellpacker system to be Polished
relieved below the casing shoe. Bore

Liner Tiebacks
HAL40635
Using Swellpacker systems on the liner tiebacks
eliminates the need for cement to anchor the tieback
string. Swellpacker systems are installed above the seal Swellpacker® Isolation System
assembly and the tieback string is run in hole to the on Liner Tiebacks
tieback receptacle. The seal assembly is pressure tested
and then raised; thereby, fuel for the swellable element is
circulated to the proper location (if fuel is not already in Liner Hanger
place). The seal assembly is lowered back into the tieback
receptacle, and the Swellpacker system is allowed to
swell. The Swellpacker system provides pressure-holding
capability and creates a significant anchoring force for the Swellpacker®
liner tieback string. There is no cement, float equipment, System
or cement plugs to drill. Many of the risks are reduced,
and days of operations are eliminated.

cementing operations, can provide comprehensive long-
term zonal isolation, thus enhancing the productive life
of the well and minimizing the potential of a costly
workover operation. Swellpacker® System
in Production Zones with Cement
Swellpacker systems in production zones with cement
have the added benefit of providing a reactive downhole Swellpacker®
means to address the microannulus that occurs when set System
cement debonds from the casing. The systems remain
dormant while encased in the cement sheath. Once the Float Collar
microannulus opens and liquids or gas attempt to flow
through the microannulus, the packer swells to close the
flow path. The swellable rubber conforms to almost any
irregular geometry in the casing or cement.

Features
Each tool design is unique; however, each cementing liner
hanger running tool contains four primary components,
which simplifies processes and enhances reliability.
» Piston provides the transition from pressure to force
during the expansion process. Various forms of pistons
and force multipliers are used to create force.
» Crossover valve incorporates multiple porting, which
allows pressure paths for hydraulic expansion and fluid
returns paths during the reverse out process.
» Expansion cone assembly uses the force from the
piston to drive the cone into the hanger body,
expanding it into the parent casing.
» Collet assembly transfers the load of the liner string
being conveyed into the wellbore to the drillpipe and
transmits torque to the liner through contact with the
collet retainer to torque adapter.
Benefits
» Allows for washing and reaming during deployment
without special configurations of each tool
» Higher circulating rates and pressures than
conventional systems
» Allows rotation and reciprocation during cementing
operations
» Debris-tolerant porting
» Simplified setting processes and procedures
» Redundant setting features on all flapper-set tools

VGP Packers
The large-bore Versa-Latch® gravel pack (VGP)-style
packer is an integral part of the Versa-Trieve® packer family
of tools. It provides a larger bore than the VTA packers (in
a given casing size and weight) by eliminating the
element mandrel, while still retaining many of the Versa-
Trieve packer line features. Because the element mandrel
is eliminated, the lower element retainer is pinned to the
packer mandrel, and an additional set of anti-rotation pins
are added for ease of milling. The VGP packer also
includes a top snap guide for collet locations.

Seal Units
Halliburton offers molded, crimp, and premium seal units.
Molded and crimp seals are recommended for
applications in which the seal will be going in and out of
the sealbore. Premium seals are ideal for applications that
require the seal units remain in the sealbore.
All seal units are designed for easy field redress. The
geometry of the seals helps them provide a more positive
seal as they are subjected to higher pressures and
temperatures. Many seal unit types are available, and
others can be designed to fit specific needs.

The liquid spring actuation device is used when it is
necessary to apply a number of tubing pressure tests
before activation of hydraulically operated downhole
tools. It is primarily used with a twin-flow absolute
isolation system (AIS) during SmartWell® or multizone
completions.
Features
» No atmospheric chamber or nitrogen-charged chamber
to limit time to actuation.
» Actuation system is unaffected by changes in pressure
in the lower annulus.
» Control fluid in the actuation mechanism is sealed and
therefore protected from contamination.
Benefits
» Total interventionless actuation of hydraulically
operated tools.
» Unlike similar actuation devices, the liquid spring is not
affected by changes in pressure in the lower annulus.
» Unlike nitrogen pre-charged systems, the liquid spring
mechanism eliminates well-specific setup and
enhances long-term suspension capability.
» Fluid used to communicate with the hydraulically
activated device is carried within the liquid spring
module. Therefore, it remains separate from the tubing
fluid at all times, which reduces the possibility of
control line blockages.

Twin-Flow AIS-LS
The twin-flow AIS-LS fluid control device is designed for
use in multizone applications and is particularly suited to
SmartWell® or multizone completions. It protects a zone
from fluid loss and helps enable separate production
between the upper and lower zones. The tool is run in the
closed position. It remains in the closed position until the
upper zone is completed and ready for production. The
tool works in conjunction with a liquid spring module that
responds to tubing pressure and only opens after 10 to 12
pressure cycles — with no time limit for actuation. This
provides the option of testing the tubing before the AIS-
LS device activates and opens.

Advanced Features
This section describes the unique characteristics of
Halliburton safety valves, including the contoured flapper,
high-performance piston seals, integral fittings, and self-
equalizing feature.
Contoured Flapper
Halliburton took advantage of its broad experience with
ball valves to design a reliable contoured flapper valve by
HAL8675
adapting the spherical sealing surface used in ball valves
to the flapper shape. The contoured flapper safety valve
achieves true metal-to-metal (MTM) flapper sealing
integrity while providing improved valve OD/ID ratios. This
unique design offers a distinct advantage over typical
curved flappers because it passes API Class 1 and 2
verification testing without relying on a resilient seal.

Self-Equalizing Feature
The Halliburton sideport self-equalizing feature uses a
spring-loaded carbide ball lapped to a mating spherical
seal located in the flapper seat of the safety valve.
Location of the equalizing device in the flapper seat
allows the flow tube, when activated, to radially displace
the ball outward, opening an equalizing path around the
flapper mechanism. A closely controlled channel between Flow
the flapper seat and the spring housing provides for a Tube
large equalizing area and prevents debris migration into

flow path. This flow path allows the pressure drop to be
taken through the close concentric fit of the flapper seat
and mating housing instead of across the equalizing valve

The Otis RPT and RPTS no-go lock mandrels locate on top
of the nipple’s polished bore; therefore, there are no
secondary restrictions normally associated with bottom Otis® RPT®
no-go profiles. This feature makes Otis RPT systems well Landing Nipple
suited for high-pressure, high-volume large bore
completions. Otis RPT and RPTS lock mandrels in any
given size range are designed to use the same running

High-Pressure
Locking Keys
Some of the original RPT series lock mandrels were
designed with large no-go profiles that were not
compatible with the 1/16-in. sealbore ID reductions
between nipples that are currently available. For these No-Go
sizes, the RPTS series of locks was developed. All RPTS
lock mandrels incorporate no-go profiles that allow a
1/16-in. sealbore stagger in the completion design. The
reduction in no-go OD on the RPTS lock mandrel does not High-Pressure

Wireline Toolstring
A wireline toolstring is attached to the wireline to furnish
the mechanical force necessary for setting, pulling, or
servicing subsurface equipment under pressure without
killing the well. Toolstrings are available in various ODs
and component lengths that are designed to be
compatible with various tubing sizes.
Otis Stems
Otis stems are used as weight to overcome stuffing-box
packing friction and well pressure on the cross-sectional
area of the wireline. The stem can also transmit force Jars
either upward or downward to set or retrieve subsurface
controls. Stem size and weight is determined by the
impact force required and the size of the subsurface HAL8502
control to be run or pulled. For normal conditions, 5 ft of

Otis Jars
Otis jars are available in mechanical and hydraulic types.
With a set of mechanical jars below the stem, the weight
of the jars and stem can be used to jar up or down by
pulling and releasing the wireline. A Halliburton wireline
specialist can easily feel the jars and manipulate the
wireline. Hydraulic jars are designed to provide jarring
action in wells in which it is difficult to obtain good jarring
action with mechanical jars. Hydraulic jars that only allow
an upward impact are usually run just above the regular
mechanical jars. They require careful maintenance for
maximum use in the toolstring. Jar operation is monitored

Otis Go-Devil
An Otis go-devil is a slotted stem with a fishing neck. If
the tool becomes stuck, the go-devil can be attached to
the slickline using a small strip of metal pinned in the slot
to prevent the wireline from coming out. The go-devil is
dropped from surface and slides down the wire until it
hits a restriction or the top of the rope socket. The go-
devil will cut the slickline at that point, allowing the
slickline to be retrieved. Its use is usually limited to fishing
operations in which the wireline socket is inaccessible,
and the line must be cut. Otis go-devils designed to cut
the wireline at the wireline socket are also available.
Expandable Wirefinder
The expandable wirefinder is designed to locate wireline
lost below a tubing restriction (e.g., a tubing-retrievable
safety valve). The expandable wirefinder is held retracted
in a sleeve that is run, located, and preferably latched in
the tubing restriction. The wirefinder is then sheared out
HAL8515
of the sleeve, allowing it to expand to the tubing ID. Once HAL8514
the lost wireline is located and deformed, the wirefinder
can be returned to its running sleeve and retracted for

Test Tools
Otis® Selective Test Tools
Otis® selective test tools are used to test tubing, locate
leaks, or set hydraulic-set packers. Designed to hold
pressure from above, selective test tools can be set in
compatible Otis X®, XN®, R®, or RN® landing nipples in the
tubing string. With the keys retracted, the tool is run to a
point below the desired nipple. Pulling up through the
nipple releases the locking keys to set the tool with
downward motion. Pressure from above can then
be applied.
Benefits
» Designed for high working pressure
» Located in the lowest nipples first, these tools are then
