031/1 PHYSICS 1
(For Both School and Private Candidates)

Time:3:00Hour Friday 28th April 2023 am.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. This paper consists of sections A, B and C with a total of eleven (11) questions
2. Answer all questions in section A, B and two (2) questions from section C.
3. Section A carries sixteen (16) marks, section B fifty four (54) marks and section C thirty (30)
Marks.
4. All working must be in blue or black ink.
5. Mathematical tables and non-programmable calculator may be used.
6. All communication devices, calculators and any unauthorized materials are not allowed in
the examination room.
7. Write your examination number on every page of your answer sheet (s) or booklet(s) .

Where necessary the following constants may be used:

(i) Acceleration due to gravity, g = 10m/s2

(ii) Density of water = 1.0g/cm3 or 1000Kg/m3


(iii) Pie, 𝜋 = 3.14

(iv) Speed of light waves = 3.0 x 103 m/s

(v) Density of steel = 7800Kg/m3

SECTION A (16 Marks)
Answer all questions in this section

1. For each of the item (i) –(x) choose the correct answer from among the given alternatives

4. (a)(i)Draw a simple pulley system whose velocity ratio is three(3)
(ii)If the efficiency of this machine is 80% what load can be raised by an effort of 200N?

(b)When particular substance at a certain temperature is heated, it expands when the


same substance at the same temperature is cooled it also expands. What is a substance
and the temperature?

5. (a) Explain why somebody inside a car cannot push it?

(b) A rocket taking off vertically, pushes out 25kg of exhaust gas every second at a velocity
of 100m/s. If the total mass of the rocket is 200kg. What is the
(i) Resultant upward force on the rocket
(ii) Upward acceleration
(iii) Acceleration of the rocket in 5(b) above when it has burned off 100kg of fuel.

6. (a)(i) What would be the consequences of the decreasing of amount of ozone layer in
atmosphere?
(ii) Explain why is the surface temperature of Venus is so much higher than on Earth?

(b)Venus planet is 108 x 106 km from the sun and it takes 225 days to complete one orbit
around the sun. Calculate the speed of the planet in km/hr.

7. (a)(i)Use diagrams to explain an amplitude and frequency as used in wave parameters

(ii)State the relationship between frequency and period in wave motion.

(b) A steel wire hangs vertically from fixed point supporting a weight of 80N to its lower
end. The length of the wire from fixed point to the weight is 1.5m and its diameter is
0.5mm. Calculate the fundamental frequency emitted by the wire when plucked.

8. (a)(i)Explain why fossil fuels are classified as non-renewable resource?


(ii) What are three (3) energy conversions that might occur in a fuel power plants?

(b)In a circuit shown, the total resistance between X and Y is 2Ω.

and Y is 2.0A, then find the current in the 4Ω resistor.

SECTION C (30 Marks)
Answer any two (2) questions from this section

9. (a)Draw a sketch of the magnetic field around a straight wire carrying a current.

(b)Why most of the transistors in use are npn - transistors?

(c) The figure shows two coils X and Y, X is connected to a battery and Y is connected to a
centre –zero galvanometer, G.

(i) State and explain the deflection of the galvanometer needle when the switch, K is
closed for few seconds then opened.
(ii) Why must the galvanometer be a centre –zero type?
(iii) What could be done in X to increase the current induced in circuit. Y?

10.(a) Draw a ray diagram showing how a converging lens produces a real image larger than
the object.
(b) State the two conditions for the parallel forces system to be in equilibrium.

(c) An object is placed 20cm from a converging lens of focal length 8cm. Calculate the
distance of the image formed from the lens

11.(a) Explain why mercury is more preferred to alcohol in liquid in –glass thermometers?

(b)An npn –transistor circuit has suitable meters m1 and m2

(i) Why is called a common emitter circuit? which meter measures the base current
(ii) How would the readings on m1 and m2 compares?

(c) Re-draw the circuit in 11(b) above so that only one battery is required to supply the
transistor.
