PHY242 TEST #1 (2012) Electronics

Datez 23 February 2012 Duration: I hour 30 minutes
INSTRUCTIONS

Write the initials of your tutor in the box at the top right-hand side; and your Lastname, Initials, ID #, and
Group# (e.g. P7), in the appropriate spaces on the cover sheet of the answer book. Do not detach the answer
sheets from each other.

Answer ALL questions in Section A and any TWO questions from Section B
Note: All resistors are in ohms, unless otherwise stated; "1r: 1g3"
SECTION A
(Answer ALL questions; each question is worth 2 marks)

A(l) The voltage across the 9C) resistor in Fig. I is a.5V. (i)
What is the voltage across resistor R? (ii) What is the 10 v t )1oA 30

value of R?

A(2) Calculate the current through the 30O resistor in Fig. 2. Figure I Figure 2

A(3) The mains voltage supply in the USA is 120 V, 60H2. Calculate the peak voltage of this supply. What
is the period of this supply?

A(4) Distinguish between a conductor and a sqniconductor using energy band diagrams.

A(5) Silicon is an insulator at absolute zero temperature; but it exhibits some electrical conduction at room
temperature. Explain.

SECTION B
(Answer any TWO questions out of the three).

Bl. (a) Using Kirchhoff s laws calculate the current through

the 20Q resistor in Fig. 3. [0 marks]

Figure 3

(b) Use Thevenin's theorem to calculate the current through (i) the l2O resistor in Fig. 4, and (ii) the

5Q resistor in Fig. 5. [0 marks]

B.2. (a) Suppose that in the LCR series circuit shown in Fig. 6; R: 25C),
n L C
L=30mH,andC=l2pF,andtheyareconnectedtoagOV,500Hz I
a.c. source. Calculate (i) the impedance in the circuit, (ii) the cunent

in the circuit, (iii) the voltmeter readings across each component, (v) v

the phase angle, $.

f4,2,3,6 marks]

(b) By drawing the phasor diagram; show the trigoncnefic relationship between the total impedance Z
of the circuit and the resistance R in the circuit. This trig. relationship is called the "power factor" of the
circuit. [5 marks]

83. (a) The circuit in Fig. 6 is now modified so that R:2.5C), L = 30 mH and C : l2trrF, and they are

connected to a 90V source ofvariable frequency. Calculate (i) the resonance frequency ofthe circuit,

(ii) the Q-value for the circuit, (iii) the total impedance at resonance.

f3,3,3 marks]

(b) Calculate the current and the voltages across (i) the resistor, (ii) the inductor and (iii) the capacitor,

at the resonance frequency. t2,3,3,3 marks]
