1. INTRODUCTION
This Method Statement describes the specific safe working methods which will be
used to carry out installation of floor and wall tiles to accommodate approved layout.
It gives details of how the work will be carried out and what health and safety issues
and controls are involved.

2. SCOPE
The purpose of this method statement is to describe the sequence of activities which
will be followed for installation of floor tile and wall tile as per the approved drawing
in unit 3804 at One Za’abeel tower, this method statement will ensure that all related
activities are executed in accordance with the specification requirements and safety
measures are implemented throughout the progress of work.

Below is a brief description of the works involved in the scope of work.


• Installation of new floor and wall tiles with cementitious adhesive and grout.
• installation of 100mm high MDF skirting with groove finished.

3. PURPOSE OF THE METHOD STATEMENT.


The purpose of producing this method statement is to describe the procedure and
precautionary sign/warning notices will be erected and maintained to control access in
the working area during the construction work, Strict adherence to this method
statement is critical to the health and safety of all manpower engaged in this work. Any
deviation must first be authorized by the site supervisor, Work safely throughout the entire
process.

5.0 RESPONSIBILITIES
SITE ENGINEER
• Ensure strict compliance with procedure.
• The site Engineer will be managing the activities to execute the works as detailed
in MOS with safe practice and procedure.
• The contractor should strictly follow site rules and regulation while doing the job.
• Responsible for overall projects executions

• Adapt a leading role concerning contractor’s quality and safety procedures.


• Make sure all the laborers adhere to the HSE policies ex. Use safety restraints,
safety harness...etc.
• Provide all necessary tools, equipment, and material required at the site.
• Ensure availability of all required tools to maintain a safe working environment.

SITE SUPERVISOR

• The carrying out of work and the proper distribution of all the available resources
in coordination with the Site Engineer daily.
• Daily reports of the works are achieved and coordinated for future planning with
the Site Engineer.
• Meeting with any type of unforeseen incident or requirement and reporting the
same to the Site Engineer immediately.
• Should acquire any necessary civil works clearances and coordination.
• The identified HSEQ aspects and TBT are briefed to the working crew before the
starting of the job and its HSE Officer/Representative shall be responsible for the
safe executing of the above activities in strict compliance with approved
MOS/TRA via Control, supervise and record toolbox meetings.
• Ensure that all HSE requirements are met and implemented while executing the
works.

SITE WORKER

• Maintenance of all materials associated with fire protection systems and in line
with Cherwell’s SOW
• Following approved checklists for service and maintenance of the assets.
• Handling of the site materials, accessories, tools, and equipment.
• Ability to perform routine maintenance on equipment and determine when and
what kind of maintenance is needed.
• Maintaining circuits and sensors, following wiring and system specifications.
• Performing other related activities as instructed by the Superior.

HSE OFFICER

• The implementation of all safety measures following the HSE plan and that the
whole workforce is aware of its proper implementation.
• The implementation of safety measures is adequate to maintain a safe working
environment on the maintenance activity.
• Inspection of all the site activities and training personnel in accident prevention
and its proper reporting to the Maintenance Manager.
• The site is maintained in a clean and tidy manner.
• Ensure only trained persons shall operate the power tools.
• Ensure all concerned personals shall use PPE and all other items as required.
• Ensure high risk elevated areas are provided are barricade, tape, safety nets and
provided with ladders.
• Ensure service area/inspection area openings are provided with barricade, tape,
and safety nets.

• Always ensure safe access to site work.

6. DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

Coordinate deliveries to comply with the One Za’abeel management Schedule and
arrange for off-the-ground storage. Do not load any area beyond the safe design
and recommended load limits.
Do not store product outside. Always try to stack all materials flat on a smooth
pallet, even, and surface.

7. INSTALLATION GUIDE
TILES INSTALLATION.
Materials Handling on Worksite and Storage
• Materials shall be received in parts as per site requirements and standard boxes and/or
packs, pallets.
• Materials shall be stored properly and handled as per manufacturers’
recommendations if any.
• Obtain each color, grade, finish, type, composition, and variety of tiles from a single
source.
• For grout and setting materials, obtain ingredients of uniform quality from one
manufacturer for each cementitious and admixture component and one source or
producer.
Flooring Work
• Site must be clean and free from other construction materials.
• Establishing of floor level in terms of finished floor line is to be as the same as the
existing finishing level.
• Work shall comply with all project specifications, rules, regulations, laws, and
ordinances of all authorities having jurisdiction.
• Tiles type & color, mortar mix, grout, adhesives, etc.,
• Shop drawings and method statements shall be approved before commencing any
tilling works.
• Tiling mockup shall be arranged for final approval at the location designated by the
client.
• Approved mockup and sample shall be preserved and always readily available at the
site during the entire duration of the work.
• Ensure that the MEP clearance is obtained for the tile work area.
• In wet areas, ensure that the waterproofing is completed and tested for leakage & any
applicable inspections.
• Obtain the required safety and health clearance from Safety Department before
starting the work.
• Restrict the area from foot and wheel traffic before and during the tiling activity to
prevent damages from the finished work.

• Inspection requests along with the key plan showing the area to be executed will be
raised to Engineers progressively for the tiling works. All inspections will be carried out
in phases to cover a part of the total work.

INSTALLATION OF FLOOR TILES

• The Surface on which the tiles will be laid should be cleared of all debris and loose
materials.it should be washed, if required.
• Final clearance from MEP department should be taken before starting the work.
• If any variation in colour, texture or size is observed on the tiles when the boxes are
opened, then such tiles should be segregated and kept apart for replacement.
• Screed should be laid in perfect horizontal in the rooms and at required slope in the
kitchen and bathrooms.
• The backing plaster should be cured sufficiently.
• The relevant size spacer and PVC corner beading should be available.
• With respect to the meter marking, floor finished level should be marked.
• For floor tile setting out, tile layout plan should be done as per the setting out
drawing given by the designer.
• Mechanical mixing machine should be available to ensure thorough mixing of the
tile adhesive.
• Follow the approved shop drawing, where the first tile’s location installed, first tile
should be guide for installation.
• After proper mixing of the adhesive and pour on the floor at the aera where the
installation will occur.
• Apply thin set of mixed adhesives on the tiles in 3-4mm.
• Set the tile with thin set adhesives onto the floor and use rubber or plastic hammer
to push up to the correct level and location.
• Tile must be correctly positioned at the time they are places and laid with joints.
• Use approved PVC tiles spacer to keep the joint of each tile.
• Control the overall level of the finished floor by means of a spot check level.
• Provide 1% slope going to floor drain in kitchen and bathrooms.
• Set out the tiling width joints of consistently width, ensuring they are horizontal and
parallel.
• Cleaning the tiles from dirty of glue.
• Remove all the PVC spacer before grouting.
• Use the approved grout and apply the grout in every joint smooth, level, and clean
application.

Important points to keep in mind before starting the process:


• Tiles should be kept on a wooden base which is a few inches higher from the floor.
• The glue should be kept in a dry place.
• Tiles should be segregated according to their designs and installation place to
maintain a systematic installation.
• Have the layout design on the paper with you.
• Make sure you measure the tiles properly before cutting them to fit the space.
• If you need to make a hole in the tiles, make sure you use an accurately sized round
drill.

8. INSTALLATION OF A WALL TILE


• Provide a rough wall finish of plastering prior to receive wall tiles.

• The instructions to make the adhesive mix are given on the packaging of the
adhesive. Make the mix according to those measurements and instructions.
• Make sure there are no lumps.
• Measure the consistency of the paste. Now leave it for some time.
• Make sure there are no spills, and the adhesive is applied straight on the wall and is
stuck to it. Also, level the surface of the wall by using a spirit leveller.
• Use the 12mm notch trowel in the down to upward motion to spread the adhesive
on the wall. The trowel will form ridges on the adhesive.
• Don’t cover the entire wall with adhesive the first time. Spread the adhesive partly
which can be covered in one go.
• Apply the adhesive on the back of the tile and set it up. Now make the ridges on
the back of the tiles using the notch trowel. The ridges should be in the opposite
direction in comparison to those on the wall. Make sure the tiles are placed in the
same direction as the arrow.
• Use a rubber hammer to make it stick strongly to the wall. Repeat the same process
for the other tiles.
• To achieve uniform joint use approved PVC tile spacer to separate the tiles by same
gap.
• Use the spirit leveller to make sure the tiles are at the same level. And keep wiping
the tiles.
• Clean the tiles from dirty glues.

FILLING THE SPACES BETWEEN THE WALL TILES


• Remove the spacers and clean the tile joints and tiles.
• Make a thick paste of grout and water.
• Now fill in the joints with the approved grout using an plastic plate.
• Clean the joints using a sponge and water after 30 minutes.
• After 24 hours, clean the joints again using soapy water. And then wipe it off with a
dry cloth.

INSPECTION CHECKLIST FOR TILING WORKS


CHECKS BEFORE INSPECTION.
• Check settings out and surface preparation.
• Clean, free of any debris, dust, oil, grease, etc.
• All pipes sleeved sealed (grouted)
• Waterproofing applied and tested.
• Service within walls and floors have been tested and approved.
• Starting tiles.
• Tile spacer.
• Protection (for existing finished materials)

CHECK AFTER INSTALLATION


• Level.
• Layout.
• Alignment.
• Tiles approved pattern.
• Consistent joint/gap.
• Hollow sound (tolerance for hollow sound tiles is 15% of the total area of single
tiles).

• Slope going to drain.


• No defective tiles have been installed.
• Grouting application is even, smooth and level.
• Proper cutting of tiles. No chipped or broken edges.
• Protection for the installed tiles.
• Housekeeping.

8. QUALITY CONTROL & ASSURANCE

Cherwell shall implement a Quality Management System at the Project site covering
the requirements of ISO 9001:2015 QMS.
Cherwell shall manage to:
• Identify the processes needed for achieving the quality service and product as per
client satisfaction and applicable standards.
• Determine the sequence and interaction of the execution processes, and determine
criteria and methods required to ensure the effective operation and control of these
processes.
• Ensure the availability of information necessary to support the operation and
monitoring of these processes i.e., project specifications/method statements.
• Measure, monitor and analyze these processes by following the work and service
plans.
• Implement actions necessary to achieve the planned results and continual
improvement.
• Identify QHSE hazards associated with its activities and planning for risk control.
• Established to maintain quality of the works following specification and standard.
• Materials to be inspected by Site Supervisor after delivery to site.
• Works shall be inspected by the Site Supervisor at every stage.
• To ensure that quality is maintained, we will coordinate with the building
management team regularly.
• The site Supervisor and the Za’abeel representative shall inspect the materials and
workmanship.
• Approval by the supervisor in charge during the time of work will be accepted as
sufficient evidence that arrangements for manufacture and quality comply with
these requirements.
• Always inspect the job by site supervisor on each step of the work progress.

9. HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT

Before commencing any work, the team shall strictly follow as per the Cherwell Health
& Safety recommendations for handling and use of the materials. Ensure all involved
personnel shall be aware of the same. The general safety guidelines are given below:
1. Ensure the work area is safe & clean.
2. All employees shall adopt safe working practices.
3. Safety equipment PPE (Safety helmet, safety shoes, coveralls, gloves, goggles, face
mask as applicable) to be always worn.
4. When working at a high level, the appropriate safety harness shall be used and
secured whilst working-extra care shall be taken whilst using tools at a high level to
prevent dropping.

5. Ensure sufficient lighting is available during testing.


6. Report all accidents no matter how small to the Safety Officer on duty.
7. Proper access for the labor and equipment shall be provided for the works.
8. All machinery shall be checked for maintenance records.
9. The site shall be cleaned from all debris, steel waste, nails, etc.
10. Toolbox talks to be conducted before the commencement of testing works.
11. Close supervision on safety requirement shall be provided.
12. All necessary barriers, signage lighting etc., to be provided and maintained.
13. Awareness of Site Emergency evacuation procedures.
14. Inspect tools and ensure that they are free of defects.
15. Ensure that appropriate tools are used for each activity.
16. Ensure only Trained and Competent Workers allowed to use power tools.
17. Ensure strict compliance with One Za’abeel management procedure.
