Schools Should Focus On Academic Success and Passing Examinations
Many people state that students should focus on academic studying and passing examinations in order to
get good degrees instead of learning practical skills such as cookery, dressmaking, woodwork at school
because these skills can be taught by family and friends. In my opinion, I partially agree with the
statement and there is something I oppose.
On the one hand, academic subjects provide skills that are useful for students to be able to work in any
field, making teaching practical skills redundant. For example, core subjects like math, computer science,
physics, chemistry develop critical thinking, precision, problem-solving skills; while literature, history,
geography help students gain knowledge about common social aspects of the world. Moreover, adding
mandatory skill learning would affect students’ timetable greatly and they may not have enough time to
focus on studying, so lower academic results are expected. It would be better if this kind of teaching is
made optional for students who have more free time to attend.
On the other hand, teaching practical skills at school is a good idea for students who do not pursue higher
education or want to broaden their job window. In the modern era, employers require more than just
academic certificates to hire manpower because many managers want skillful employees with experience
to perform the tasks at work to save budget for training. Therefore, a decent number of academic
graduates have trouble finding jobs because they are not prepared with practical skills for the jobs. For
instance, a hurtful truth in Vietnam is that many university graduates with excellent academic degrees
cannot land the careers they want, but end up working other jobs to get money for extra training courses
before going back to pursuing their specialized occupations. This truth happens due to the lack of
practical skills taught at school and they mostly focus on theory learning.
In conclusion, the role of academic studying and learning practical skills at school are equally important
to students. Students should focus on earning academic degrees and schools should organize career
guidance events to help students learn the skills that they feel crucial to their future jobs.
