WRITING A SHORT DESCRIPTIVE PARAGRAPH ABOUT A


CHARACTER OR A SETTING

People express their ideas, thoughts and feelings about other persons,
places or things by using descriptive words. Descriptive words tell something
about the size, shape, color, kind and number of the person, place, animal or
thing they modify. In addition, these are used to facilitate better communication
and promote better understanding.
Therefore, this Self-Learning Kit was developed to help you improve
your skills in writing short descriptive paragraphs about a character or setting in
stories listened to.

To the Learner

This Self Learning Kit opens an avenue for you to know more about
yourself, to discover your limitations, and be encouraged to do something about
your limitations. This is a learner-friendly because the activities are designed to
have an orderly progression of the mastery of the competency. It is hoped that
you will become self-directed as you work independently in two days. Follow
and understand the directions carefully. Kindly use a separate sheet of paper to
write on your answers. Furthermore, handle this kit with care. Lastly, be honest
in answering all the activities provided.

At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:


1. note important details pertaining to character and
setting (EN1LC -llla-j-l.l);
2. value the importance of writing a short descriptive
paragraph correctly; and,
3. use correct descriptive words about a character or a
setting in writing a paragraph.

Directions: Read and analyze the following questions. Choose the letter of the

Today, you will learn how to write a short descriptive


paragraph about a setting and character of a story. In addition,
you will learn to apply again what you have learned in writing
paragraph properly like indention, capitalization of proper 3
nouns and the beginning letter of a sentence and the use of
proper punctuations like comma, period or question mark.
The following are two important elements of a story:
Characters -these are the persons or animals that take
part in the story.
Setting – tells the time and place the story took place.

Directions: Think of at least five of your favorite short stories read to you by
your mother, your teacher or a friend. List down the characters and setting of
each story by completing the table below. Then, give a word or words that
describe/s the setting and characters.

Farm House
The Reyes family owns a farm house in a barrio where they usually stay
during summer time.
Mang Kanor, the father, loves to bring his family to this place because it
is cool, quiet, and the air is so breath-refreshing.
Mona, the only daughter, likes to paint and draw here because she finds it
very inspiring and motivating. She can make lots of funny and interesting
stories here because of the natural and green surroundings. She loves to stay
here with her family every summer time.

“I am glad it is summer time. It makes me happy because I can go to near lakes


to pick up big snails and get fresh kangkong for our food,” said little Nina.
“Hey, I am also excited because it is summer time. I can play all day and
be merry. I can relax at the farm because it is cool and fresh air. I shall ask
Mother to teach me how to prepare and cook delicious pinakbet and
dinengdeng. Come on! Let us have fun and be happy,” said Allan.

Homework or Basketball?
Jerome was sitting in the sala. He is doing his English homework. He
looked restless and unhappy while working on his homework. His mother
noticed it.
“What’s the matter Jerome? You seem worried and sad,” asked his
mother. “I can’t understand my English homework, Mother,” answered Jerome.
His mother did not believe on his reason because English has been his
favorite subject since Grade 1. She believed that the main reason was his
sleeping late at night. He had been spending too much time watching basketball
games.
“Please, Mother, I don’t want to miss this basketball game tonight. It is a
crucial game between the two best PBA teams.”
“I’m sorry, Jerome. Your health comes first. You have to relax and go to
bed now. By the time you wake up tomorrow, your English homework will be a
lot easier for you. Turn off the television now,” his mother said.
Jerome felt bad that he had to miss the basketball games but he had to
follow what his mother told him to do so
Jerome woke up early, fresh and ready for school that day. He did not
forget his homework and to his surprise, it was not difficult at all.
