Introductory Message
Welcome to TLE 7/8 – ICT (Illustration)!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of San Carlos City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western
Visayas through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible
adults) in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education
Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The TLE 7/8 - ICT (Illustration) Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the
leaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency
(MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will
be made available to the learners with the references/links to ease the independent
learning.

For the learner:

The TLE 7/8 - ICT (Illustration) Activity Sheet is developed to help you
continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you
with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active
learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the activities and
answer the assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed
schedule.

Select Measuring Instruments

I. Learning Competency
LO 1. Select measuring instruments (TLE_ICTIL7/8MC-0d-1)
1.1 Interpret object or component to be measured according to the
appropriate regular geometric shape
1.2 Select measuring tools appropriate to the object to be measured
based on job requirements.
I.3 Obtain correct specification from relevant sources.
I.4 Select appropriate measuring instruments according to job
requirements.
I.5 Use alternative measuring tools without sacrificing cost and quality
of work.

II. Background Information for Learners

In our daily activities we frequently perform mensuration and calculations.

Mensuration is all about the method of measurement and it is based on the use of
algebraic equations and geometric calculations. Like for example if you wish to
create a birthday tarpaulin for your mother’s party, you may decide what is going to
be the length and width that is appropriate to the venue.
Mensuration is usually based on pattern that serves as the standard for
making calculations. The result of mensuration is just an estimate rather than actual
physical measurement while the calculations are basically considered accurate.

1
Different Measuring Tools and its Uses

Tools Uses Geometric

Shape
Protractor is used to form angles
that cannot be made with the
triangles. Angles from 0° to 180° are
marked on the semicircular edge.

Divider is similar to compass in

construction, it is used for dividing
distances into a number of equal
parts by the trial-and-error method.

Set of Squares are used for

drawing vertical and oblique lines.

T-square is used as guide in

drawing horizontal lines.

Compass is used to draw circles,

arcs, radii and parts of many
symbols.

Ruler is a short measuring

instruments most commonly 12”,
and are most useful for measuring
the length of small objects.
Triangular Scale is used to reduce
or enlarge drawings.

Alternative Measuring tools:

Being an illustrator requires patient and skills in using the tool for
drafting patterns both manual and electronics. Now a day, in the advent of
technology many drafters prefer the use of computers for faster and versatile
work. However, those underprivileged individuals are resourceful finding an
alternative tools available at home. These are the following:

1. Straight edge rules- are used specifically to draw or scribe straight lines
or for checking the straightness of a surface. Examples are straight

2
cardboard or straight metal edges, book edges, Identification Card edges,
and the like.

2. String- the first straight lines for construction and other purposes which
was used during Medieval. They put dye and stretch tight over a wooden
beam to mark straight lines.

3. Objects of cylinder form – these are object available at home like cups,
glasses, bottles, cans and the like which can be used to draw a circle.

Graphic Software:

1. CAD (Computer Aided Design)

2. Paint
3. Adobe Photoshop
4. Digital Illustration

Activity 1. Directions: Using appropriate measuring tools and instruments,
solve the following problems. Write your answer on the space provided below.

1. Anne a Grade 7 student of Science Technology and Engineering was

tasked to identify different angles. By using the appropriate measuring
instruments, draw the following angles: Write your answer inside the
box.
2. John wants to create a box to be used in wrapping the gift for his mother’s
3
birthday. Help him determine the length, width and height of the box
below using the appropriate measuring tool.

Width = _______ inches

Height = ________ inches

Length = _________ inches
