The Duality of Technology: Rethinking the Concept of Technology in Organizations

1. Communication Technologies

Which communication technologies have you used most frequently? What are the main

reasons for using them frequently?

Telephones especially smartphones are a modern form of communication highly utilized

in modern days. This is the communication technology I utilize frequently through

communication, sharing data, and entertainment. The technology is capable of connecting to the

internet and searching for any data on the web or social media platforms, leading to a wide range

of communication including calls. The target has been of great importance in my life, although it

comprises challenges like social media addiction. Although there is this challenge, the main

reason for frequently using the technology is for call communication and sharing of data from

the internet. Making calls through the telephone helps in networking and building relationships

with distanced individuals while sharing data helps in awareness creation and entertainment,

especially through social media, especially photos and videos. These are usually the reasons

why I frequently use telephone smartphone technology.

Have you noticed the "Productivity Paradox" in your use of communication technologies?

Give examples and use course concepts to explain/relate to your observations.

2

Through telephone smartphone technology, the productivity paradox experienced is social

media addiction. Through increased utilization of smartphones, I spend most of my time on

social media platforms, an aspect that lowers productivity in my daily obligations. The platform's

entertainment aspect tends to spend much of an individual's time, a challenge that am faced with

through the technology utilization. Social media addiction makes an individual lazy and active

doing nothing on the platform to the daily objectives. Additionally, it weakens my brain rather

than boosting it and lowers my overall periodicity (Mengmeng, 19-27). An example is using

TikTok social media, whereby I spend much time on short videos, time that can be beneficial for

other productive activities.

2. Communication Technology Ecosystem

What are examples of the four factors at the system level in the Deepfake news story?

Deep fake news has of huge impact on the users, making it essential to be eliminated and

websites responsible for the act banned or punished. Deefakes are wrong information that is

spread through the internet impacting certain populations or individuals negatively. enabling,

limiting, motivating, and inhibiting are factors linked with deepfake, and it is essential to

understand them to eliminate the monster from internet technology (Lara). Based on the case

study in San Francisco Lawsuit on websites that are known for creating sexually explicit, it is

essential to understand the four factors of the process of ethical artificial intelligence internet use

on news.

Enabling factors are known to accept the chances of applying the technology in society.

Based on this factor and its link to the case study, the communication technology of deepfake

sexual content is an illegal aspect and it must be rejected, being facilitated by an enabling factor.
3

An example is where all sexual AI-generated content must be removed from the website's

systems and eliminated from society access (Grant, 1-8). On the other hand, limiting factors

block the chances of technology application. An example is when artificial intelligence-

generated sexual content is blocked from any form of access through websites to society.

On the other hand, motivating factors are understood to motivate a person to expose and

adopt the technology. Based on the case study, individuals need to be aware of deep fake news

and be able to be exposed to the relevant bodies and the trend and culture spread amongst

internet users and adopt towards the elimination of the type of news from website systems. An

example is reporting websites that have deepfake news especially sexual content through the

utilization of AI to the government bodies that are responsible for regulating websites' news. And

finally, inhibiting factors constrain individuals from adopting the technology. Through these

factors, individuals can reject the content news and decline to use the websites or technology

(Grant, 1-8). An example is when Google's media organization makes it impossible for websites

that post any sexual content to be banned from the system entirely.

Suggestion to regulate factors at the system level to prevent such abusive use of AI?

Regulating factors at the system level helps in ethical website news against contents that

are harmful to users like sexual videos and images. It is the responsibility of the government to

ensure that internet users are fed with positive news through AI utilization. All four factors must

be regulated effectively to ensure that websites operate ethically through their applications.

Website oversight on sexual content that is illegal is the strategy that is most effective in

preventing illegal news content from users. Oversight and placing restrictions like a ban on the

sites if found with deepfake news is a process that can help in the elimination of the news from

websites.
4

How to apply the statement to understanding the Deepfake news story?

Every form of technology comprises of target user market, and it is through the aspect where

deepfake news has the target, especially on sexual content. When the target user market is

understood which is mainly teenagers and young adults, it is possible to understand deepfake

news, especially on sexual content. Some websites are involved in the news and they are

considered to be the center of the social environment of the contents. Based on the sexual news

case study, it is understood through realizing the target users and the population that is likely to

access the news faster and easily, against the competing and contemporary technologies.

3. “Duality of Technologies”

The duality of technology plays a huge role in organizations, making it essential for individuals

to understand its impact and facilitate its deliverables through obstacle elimination. Duality

usually has two diverse sections that comprise opposing meaning an example being the duality of

good and evil. In organizations, duality in technology is required to be utilized for the benefits

and objectives achievement. An example is the duality of structure, whereby the duality of

technology claims that individuals use technology to create structure, but on the other hand, the

technologies become a section of the structure restricting actor's actions for the organization's

ethical prospect. It means that technology is designed by individuals and they are responsible for

its change through their actions, yet, humans use it to achieve some activities. The main

importance for individuals to understand the duality of technology is to improve productivity and

efficacy in an organization and facilitate the effectiveness in business with the lowest level of

R&D spending. Smartphone utilization is a technology frequently used as a dual technology.

There are different ways an individual can utilize a smartphone, and it is their responsibility to

choose the activities (Orlikowski, 398-427). The technology device can be used to access sexual

content like deepfake news which is one of its actions, but it is wrong utilization since the

content is illegal, which is an example of the duality of technology on good or evil especially on

organizations devices available at work.
