ASSIGNMENT 3

PDE-MTH 405

(1) If g ∈ C 1 (R), then the initial value problem

ut − iux = 0, u(0, x) = g(x),
has a C 1 solution on a neighbourhood of the origin if and only if g is real analytic
on a neighbourhood of the origin.
(2) Prove that if c ∈ R and u is a C 1 (R2 ) solution of the equation ∂t u + c∂x u = 0,
then
{(t, x) ∈ R2 ; u ∈ C k on a neighbourhood of t, x}
is a union of characteristic lines.
(3) Solve ∂x u + ∂y u = u with u = cos x when y = 0.
(4) Show that for c ∈ R and f ∈ C 1 (R2 ) there is one and only one solution to the
initial value problem
ut + cux = f, u(0, x) = 0.
Find the formula for the solution. Find an f ∈ C 1 (R2 ) such that the solution is
not in C 2 (R2 ).
(5) For the initial value problem
ut + cux + u2 = 0, u(0, x) = g(x), c ∈ R,
show that if g ∈ C0∞ (R), g not identically zero, there is a local solution u ∈
C ∞ ({−δ < t < δ} × R) but that the solution does not extend to a C ∞ solution
on all of R2 .
(6) Show that the initial value problem (u0 )2 − u2 = 0, u(0) = 1, has exactly two real
analytic solutions on a neighbourhood of t = 0.
(7) Prove the following identities involving multi-index notation:
X m!xα
(x1 + x2 + · · · + xd )m = ,
α!
|α|=m

1 X |α|!xα
= .
1 − (x1 + x2 + · · · + xd ) α!
(8) For ut − iux = 0, u(0, ·) = g(·), g real analytic at zero, the Taylor series for u was
dominated by
X (j + k)!(Bt)j (Bx)k
c .
j!k!
Show that this power series converges on a neighbourhood of (0, 0). Prove that
u, given by its convergent Taylor series, solves the initial value problem.
(9) Consider the heat equation, ut = νuxx , ν > 0, with initial value g(x), a polynomial
in x. Show that the Taylor series solution u has radius of convergence R = ∞.
Show that for each t, u is a polynomial in x. Is u polynomial in t?

(10) For the heat equation ut = νuxx , ν > 0, with real analytic initial data g(x) = 1−ix ,
show that the Taylor series
X (∂t,x )α u(0, 0)(t, x)α
, α ∈ N × N,
α!
converges for no t, x with t 6= 0.
(11) Show that if the initial value problem utt + uxx = 0, u(0, ·) = 0, ut (0, ·) = f (·),
has a C 2 solution on a neighbourhood of (0, 0), then f and u must be real analytic
on a neighbourhood of (0, 0).
(12) Let p denotes a positive real number. Show that the function f : R → R defined
by
f (x) = exp(−x−p ) for x > 0
f (x) = 0 for x ≤ 0

belongs to C (R), but is not a real analytic at x = 0.
