Problem: A rectangular garden has an area of 96

square meters. The length of the garden is 4 meters
longer than its width. Find the dimensions of the
garden.

Solution:

Let the width of the garden be x meters. Then the

length of the garden is x+4 meters. The area of the
garden is given by:

Area=length×width 96=x(x+4)

This simplifies to the quadratic equation:

x²+4x−96=0

We solve this quadratic equation by factoring. We need

two numbers that multiply to −96 and add up to 4:

 The numbers are 12 and −8.

Rewrite the quadratic equation using these numbers:

x²+12x−8x−96=0

Factor by grouping:

x(x+12)−8(x+12)=0

Set each factor to zero:

x−8=0⇒x=8
x +12x=0⇒x=−12

Since a negative width doesn't make sense in this

context, the width of the garden is x=8 meters, and the
length is x+4=12 meters.

So, the dimensions of the garden are 8 meters (width)

and 12 meters (length).
Exchange paper with your seatmate and let’s check.

Who got a perfect score? :(Students who got perfect score will raise their hands)

Very good!

VALUING:
What are the importance of solving quadratic equation? : (everyone raises their hands)

Yes, Mr. Castro. : Learning to solve quadratic equations enhances

critical thinking and problem-solving skills. It requires
students to analyze problems, identify patterns, and
apply appropriate methods to find solutions.

That’s right! What else? : ( everyone raises their hands )

Yes, Mr. Umayam : Understanding the nature of mathematical functions

and their characteristics, such as roots, vertices, axis of
symmetry, and discriminant, can be gained via solving
quadratic equations. The comprehension of
mathematical theory and its applications is enhanced by
these ideas.
